Late Night K890 Scandi Abuse Testing

  • Just beating stuff up tonight. This K890 is a really amazing material. Heavy batoning of the kiln dried Jatoba (Brazilian Cherry) did finally manage to make a small portion of the edge yield but even then, the apex was still razor sharp. I am amazed at the durability of the steel and its ability to support this thin 11° per side Scandi grind.
    Böhler K890 can be found with a Scandi blade here:
    GSO-4.5 Bushcraft: surviveknives....
    EDC-3: surviveknives....

    I would love to see a real world test (feather-stick, baton and tip strength) between K890, 3V and Magnacut in this 11 degree configuration with a serious corrosion test. For some reason my previous post was removed? These knives must be measured and tested, good video.

    Looks amazing. Would love a 4"-5" with a Convex, or a Scandivex. Not many companies do convex blades anymore, but K890 with a Convex would put in some WORK. Preferably a full convex and not just a convexed edge.

    Loving the knives in scandi grind!
    The limited 4.5 is my new favorite knife.
    Keep them coming

      We already have EDC-4s in K890 back from heat treat, working through finish grinding. EDC-3 blades in K890 are cut out and will be rough ground, profile machined and ready for heat treat in about two weeks. We have enough material to make some GSO-3s so we're going to go ahead and do that as well.

    I like the finish on the metal, that polished scandi looks gorgeous and that edge retention if f%$king incredible. Will 100% be ordering one!

      That stuff really performs. Also, not being ultra high in alloy, it seems to strop out a bit easier than it should for how much performance it gives.

    I recently ordered an EDC 3 Scandi in Magnacut as a sailing/dive knife to have on me most of the time. It would be great to have a super tough, slightly larger knife in a similar profile/grind for heavier rigging tasks, general camp knife, etc., (maybe with matching handles hahaha). This beefier EDC 4 in K890 seems like the perfect knife to combine reasonable strength with my aesthetic preference of a Scandi grind. I'm on a sailboat most of the time and I've left 3V steel out on deck for a week or so accidentally with a prior knife and the results weren't atrocious (not great, but easily serviceable). would you say K890 is more or less corrosion resistant than 3V, or basically the same?

    • @Surviveknives
      @Surviveknives  10 месяцев назад +1

      I'm not certain about a more corrosive environment but so far in our weather testing the shop, the 3V and K890 blades look about the same. The K890 has a light grey haze on the underside where it's sitting on the picnic table, most likely from the cobalt in the alloy that 3V doesn't have. We'll have EDC-4, EDC-5, and EDC-5.5 knives coming up shortly in K890 and Elmax, if you're looking for something a little larger but still efficient. It's going to be a little wait but we're also looking at some highly corrosion resistant steel options as well. Thanks so much for your interest and for stopping by to leave us a message.

    I love videos like this! Your enthusiasm is great! I'd rather have the 2 year old order for my GSO 3 though. Please get the older orders out the door. I beg you! Please! 2 years! Put it in my hand.

    I wanna order an EDC 4 but K890 or Elmax?

    • @Surviveknives
      @Surviveknives  11 месяцев назад

      K890 has a great combination of toughness and edge holding but is not stainless. More on par with 3V but with better performance. Elmax is a really high quality stainless grade. Not quite as tough (shock resistant) but also holds an excellent edge and has good weather resistance. While being less tough on paper, Elmax is still very tough for any functional application in a knife of that size. I will never offer materials that are not appropriate for a design.

    Those turned out great, and that steel really seems like a home run. I would love to see how k890 would do on a big chopper??

      Right now we have a very limited supply of this material, one ingot worth rolled into sheets, which was custom ordered and took about a year to make happen. To the best of my knowledge, this material had never been rolled into sheets for knives, but the data looked too tempting, and I had to take the chance. I also very much want to see a lot more of this material, especially in things like choppers. There will be some challenges, as the import rules and tariffs get pretty weird on the thicker material but I really want to see this happen. I love this steel.

    I really want to test K890. It’s got my attention. So does those GSO-4 bushcrafters! I knew I should have snagged one. Haha. Good stuff.👊👌

    If I were to order a knife today 11/1/2023, do you have enough material to make it in k890? Or is all your K890 spoken for?

    Loving this video and the trials you are putting the steels through for our benefits. Watching this video, and your knife school series so far, has me wanting a rounded top for batoning energy distribution, K890 steel, and a scandi at a sharper grind that normal. Even though I own quite a number of SK! GSOs, I still carry only the Garberg Mora in the field. This is because the size of the blade really fits my use profile in the field. I am still trying out the 4.5 Bushcraft which is taller than the Moras, but am liking the 4.5 series. While I am tinkering with the CPM-3V version now, I am looking forward to getting the 890 in my hands with the rounded top. Keep up the fantastic work Guy and company.

      It will take some time but I believe we'll eventually be offering our EDC-4 pattern, which has the radius spine, in a very efficient .090" thick blade stock and the 11° per side scandi grind. With the GSO-4.5 bushcraft, as long as you're not batoning it with a steel peening hammer, the spine will hold up great. We will keep you guys updated as we develop some of these ideas. Thanks so much for stopping by and for the great comment.

    Thats freaking nuts...I carve and whittle a crap ton. Seeing a Scandi at zero grind do that is AWESOME.. Using a scandiVex profile would make that knife darn near perfect.

    Now this is testing i really love too see and it looks highly good!!! Especially doing side grain or 90 degree and the edge scraping/torquing in the purple heart wood.
    I also seen some great results making the scandi ever so slightly convex aka scandivex instead of full flat to zero or like its originally is slightly hollow to a zero.
    This looks like a damn fine blade love the sharpening notch too.
    Would be a dream to test it out here in norway and give it a real world testing. Also fun to see how it sharpens up 😁

    Been enjoying the Magnacut Limited Edition 4.5 Scandi .130" I got from you guys (when i finally got it lol), but noticed some tiny flat spots on the apex after making some feather sticks. Stropping seemed to take care of it for the most part, but I might try a tiny micro bevel maybe. Been loving everything else about it though! Planning on ordering something in K890 from you guys eventually.
    Should make the 4.5 Scandi a standard option imo, Scandi grinds are indeed awesome for working with wood.

    I love my 4.5 bushcraft. Good middle ground knife with the thin stock.
    Question- will yall be offering the 5.1 in K890? If so, then ill wait to order.
    Also, will yall be reopening the GSO10 preorders again? I want one.

      Those are working through finishing and assembly right now. I do apologize for the delay. The initial decarburization issue was not our fault, but it unfortunately became our responsibility to handle in full. If you watch our video from earlier today on steel quality and why it matters, you can see that we are working hard to ensure the highest quality for your new knife, in the face of varying quality standards with the steel we are working with. May I please just have this small win tonight?

      I said we were going to be radically transparent when we got back here to Pennsylvania. To do that, we needed to have this conversation first. If I'm going to keep doing this, it's going to be my way, on my terms. Something snapped in me when my grandmother passed and I've been coming to a lot of realizations. I turned my back on why I started all of this somewhere along the way, I started playing the industry game and lost myself. I'm back now, we're embracing the old ways moving forward.
