What I've heard is that horses circulation depends on them standing on their hooves, also redistributing the weight to the other legs can cause laminitis which is excruciating, also horses *do not* want to stand still and immobilizing them for weeks at a time is physiologically damaging, and on top of that the leg isn't likely to heal correctly anyway. So your options are to torture this animal for weeks and maybe not even fix the issue, or just do the merciful thing.
