My best gaming moment EVER came on this game. Most of my teams were recovering when a Battleship landed. LANDED. I had four guys. Flight suits, plasma weapons, a couple of blaster launchers. So we hovered out of range, blew a hole in the top, and sent the next BL shot thru the hole. Into the command center. Cue the panic messages as the command staff died. We dropped into the room, cleared it, then went room by room with no casualties. Couldn't repeat that moment if I tried. That was mid-to-late 90's and I'm still trying to top that one.
@Winston Jagger If anyone is dumb enough to listen, you should be aware that this is a robot and you're going to brick your computer by visiting his website
@Winston Jagger Yeah, I totally went there and downloaded the exe-file (that triggered some stupid virus warnings, but I turned that shit off). Then I ran the exe-file and I'm getting a new computer in a week. Thanks!
Your _first_ mission was a Terror... at night. Yes, you made the _classic_ X-Com error of *presumption*, the death of far too many soldiers, but trooper Rodrigo survived plasma-fire to save the mission, and bring the fallen home. Welcome to X-Com Commander.
The first mission is usually a puny harmless UFO flying around aimlessly nearby a few days after game start. The one he quickly destroyed. Only one weak alien onboard, easy to kill, free capture of some basic loot which gives you an injection of cash and a faster start into researching useful techs. Night combat in a terror mission usually happens much later. After you've had a little time to skill and gear some good troops. Not with a pile of unarmored and poorly-equipped rookies. He did make a few errors, in my opinion. But everyone has their own playstyle and preferences. And to be fair - he was playing at Superhuman difficulty, in a somewhat quick and dirty, sloppy, half-assed way just for the benefit of the audience.
Rodrigo is the man, his squad got wiped by the aliens and he had an opportunity to run, he even got shot, but he decided to take the fight back to them and kicked the alien's ass. He's like Major Dutch from Predator movie
THE WAY THAT TERROR MISSION SLOWLY JUST GOT MORE AND MORE F******** UP! HAHAHAHAHHAHA!!! Oh man takes me back. You muscled through it though so you got my respect. Also not sure how your naming system works but I'd like to be a martyr too. ;D
Oh boy, didnt expect to be the only survivor, and promoted, probably left the part where I killed my squad mates off the mission report. Feel free to add a nickname based on this, build some lore, maybe there are rumors around the base and the new rookies are afraid of going on missions with me or something hahaha.
Man, I miss those wonderful sunny afternoons after school playing this up in my room, what a great game. I love the way it doesn't fuck around with the mechanics-You're managing a planetary defense organization, and so you better keep track of every bullet and grenade. You're the commander. That's your job. I appreciate the way modern games cut out a lot of bullshit nobody had learned not to do yet (like not making you backtrack or do everything one at a time), and I don't think they're "too easy" now or anything, but making you do a little extra work is sometimes good if it serves the overall theme or purpose of the game.
I just picked up this game this last weekend and spent SO many hours re-learning a game I hadn't played for nearly two and a half decades. Good lord do I love this game. My cousin and I, of ages 38 and 35 respectively, sat and discussed strategies and things we learned over the entire weekend. It was like being a kid again. I am overjoyed to have games like this that serve as a blast from the past.
Dang, this game is so much more complex than I ever realized before! I watched my older brothers play this when I was a little kid and I'm truly amazed they ever beat it, haha. Looking forward to watching this (old) playthrough and continuing to be impressed by your knowledge and strategy! :)
Just found this let's play after deciding to look for a playthrough of the first xcom, and I've got to say this first episode did not disappoint xD I could never actually play it myself (the most I can do without quitting a playthrough out of frustration is Long War Light), so this is perfect for me. I also think you've got just the right tone for a let's play of this kind of game. Your methodical, chill and often somewhat pained yet somewhat amused "well that sure did just happen" speaking style really fits. Looking forward to watching the rest of these videos!
I don't know this game very well, but i don't see how trying to shoot rocket so it goes through a building garisoned by frendlies into an alien could be considered a good plan on most games
@@mrmukimoto2371 It being a natural consequence of games becoming a profitable and big industry does not exclude it from being perceived as sad, though?
@@Warbandit100Old x-com is much better in my opinion. However imagine how difficult it will be to try get into this game when there are 1000s of other much flashier games trying to get your attention. It pays for modern games to be simple, easy to get into.
Poor Rodrigo going to have very bad ptsd. From killing his own team mates, went into mental breakdown in the middle of the fight, getting plasma into his torso (and it won't heal properly for the rest of his life) and the sole survivor of the battle.
Excellent tips for new players and old ones alike. This game was so well made and so deep and complex when you start to peel the layers of the onion back. I used to just add letters at the end of troop names for a quick glance at their strengths while on the battlefield. For instance if they had better than average marksmanship I would add a /M at the end of their name. If they had above average strength they would get a /S and could be carrying the most or get the heavy stuff like the rockets etc. Came in handy during troop movement.
I loved that game the moment I played it in the 90s. I hijacked my friends PC and binged so hard. Downloaded the soundtrack a few years ago and bought an original PC copy and I didn’t even own a PC
Rocket Operators playing Judge, Jury and Executioner on their comrades is old XCOM tradition :) Mine used to execute people for failure, totally without my interference.
I love the way you talk through your mindset and strategy is very useful & insightful. "I''m willing to gamble with all of your lives." Quote of the day, ^_^.
Died on first mission(to be fair it was a fairly brutal first terror.) Rip Gaston, nobody gets shot like Gaston(yes i named him just for that pun) If your low on characters may i add another? If so name him... GeneGodhand
Kudos man. That is one of the best lets plays i've ever seen! you did a great job. I know I'm a bit late to the party, but if you need a target for the aliens, call him Pattoze and pronounce it Patt-ohzz
One of my favorite games. One of my memorable moments for me was having a low morale guy drop his primed grenade in the middle of a full skyranger lol after a panic
One of the greatest games of all time. I think one day we will be told this was actually 90% reality and 10% fiction in this game. Hunting recovering and reverse engineering NHI stuff...
GC, I know i'm one of the "oh no, stop doing non dominions stuff" voices normally, but the recent TWW2 and this older gem of a game have been great for the channel imo.
Tried going back to this game but on Vetern. My whole squad got ambushed on the first terror mission by two cyberdisks and 3 sectoids as i got off the skyranger. pretty much killed that play through
I usually placed my first base for maximum ground coverage. I found shooting down multiple UFOs over water early in the game was a much bigger setback than losing funding from a few countries a few months down the road.
That was such a rough terror mission. I figured laser pistols and a tank would carry you through but the cover of night and a little bit of misplaced optimism just destroyed you
Rodrigo doesn't remember how two of his squadmates died in Pretoria, as written in the report. He just heard their screams, and they haunted him until he died
from seeing this the first time ever. rodrigo? im guessing his berserk helped him tank that shot? or how long does berserk last when its activated. this game is wild

That sounds like the most epic confrontation ever!!
XCOM is one-of-a-kind when it comes to tactical yet intense encounters like this
"He's a sniper, but he's a coward"
working as intended

on my first terror mission a civilian just walked into the fire I used to save him from the aliens.
Those terror missions were horrible
@@trrzzl ... of ... fuck ... ZOMBIEMAAAAKERS! oh ... fuck ... failed
At least it was just Floaters. Sectoids have a telepath and they bring Cyberdisks, which are pretty much indestructible without at least laser rifles.

I love how when HighPriest goes berserk, he just starts shooting the ground like he's trying to intimidate the aliens
I'm not a coward, it takes courage to runaway and leave your comrades behind.

It's sad that this game has more attention to detail than most triple A games now and it was made by a small team!
It's all about the graphics rather than the mechanics.
it's not sad, it's totally natural and normal, idiot. Think for once!
@Martin but xcom 1 & 2 that came out recently and all the most recent clones are way more boring than this original xcom :/

this game is definitely an oldie goldie. such a gem...
