I have been sewing for about 1 year. Your tips are amazing, especially the tip to measure with the ruler instead of the mat. I also tried pinning and it really makes a big difference. Thank you for all your tips and for the free pattern. So far i made 3 blocks and i love them!

Well I just got my quilt top done, "not quilted" , I had to take a break away from it for awhile, been making other things.. So I did finish it..and will quilt later , still have another I have been free motion quilting on, even though I really don't know how ha.. Thanks for the video..
Make sure you have one long line before cutting the quarter inch
Is there a reason the sides of the borders are added first, then the top and bottom. OR can it be reversed if you have made a mistake cutting the borders and put the top and bottom on first ? OOPS 🤦♀️
Kimberly thank you for this series, you are an amazing teacher. I wonder if you can answer a question for me regarding straightening fabric. I thought the fabric had to be folded in half then held out and moved and wiggled (for lack of a better word) until the bottom fold is straight then cut off the uneven edge. Do you do this?
Great job. I learned a lot. I do have a question. Why do you trim the fabric to make a straight edge on the right side of the fabric and then rotate the quilt to start cutting from the left side. Why not just cut on the left side?? Thanks!
Because if you do it from the left side, you have nothing to line your ruler up with to make sure you are cutting straight.
Thanks for the video! I am wondering though, how you handle larger quilts that don't fit on an ironing board. For me, I can never get them all wrinkle-free at the same time. :(

Question: why did you cut the long border piece that you joined with another long border piece SO long, if you were going to cut off so much of it to make the 40.5" piece? Why was it necessary to have the original piece that long? Feel like I missed something.
Hello Leassia! You can cut your borders shorter if you'd like.
I have ran into a problem. Not sure how to fix. I have added the fabric between the blocks but when I go to add the sashing the last row doesn't match up to the other rows. That row is slightly shorter. How do I fix? Thanks.
Hello Marilyn! We recommend taking the last row apart measure your blocks and make sure they are the correct size , measure your sashing and make sure it is the correct size. Re sew the row back together and pay close attention to the ¼” seam allowance

What should I do if my blocks don’t exactly measure 12.5? Some are an 1/8 off on multiple sides.
Hello Nicole! You should check your seam allowance and make the adjustment there. If your block is 1/8" larger than the block you can trim down.
What should I do if one of my blocks is 12x12 and not 12.5 x 12.5? I don’t want to redo the whole thing. I’m thinking of just adding a strip of fabric all around to make it 12.5 x 12.5.
Hello Mona! Yes, You could do that.
I am having a weird issue with the construction of my sashing and borders. I have no problem creating the right angle with the straight edges, the pinning, and then the sewing. The issue is that every other join that I make is facing the opposite direction. Meaning, the seam is facing up on one, then down on the next, and then up, and then down. I first had this issue with the joining of the sashing pieces so when I joined the border pieces I made sure they all were created the same way. Yet when I went to iron them I found that it happened again. What am I missing here? I cannot figure it out.
Errr... wait.... is the right angles that are created supposed to end up zig-zag instead of in a box??? I bet that is it......................

So you are saying all the sashing pieces may be longer. My actual block are longer. What did I do wrong? I re measured my sashing to make sure I didn’t cut too small. Is it ok that I have to kinda press down and redistribute the blocks/ blocks sashing rows? These videos were so helpful!

Quick question...can you pin the border/sashing at the top and just sew straight down and trim off what is left at the bottom instead of “working in” the excess fabric?
Depending on how square you want the results and how much you diverged from the seam allowance, quilts aren't really something I experiment on.
The ruler is 24 inches ( or more? ).Couldn't she have used it to cut the 20 1/4 inch pieces instead of the mat lines?
Maybe she was showing that technique for people that do not have such a long ruler or for cases when your borders would be longer than your ruler 😁

What foot are you using? It looks like it has a guide on it? Also, do you use steam in your iron? I was taught to use a dry iron because the steam can cause your quilt pieces to shrink which could affect the accuracy of your piecing.
Hello Fran! She's using the 1/4" foot that comes with the EverSewn Sparrow 30 ruclips.net/video/AzDnqgvvSF8/видео.html We use steam almost all the time, when pressing seams and getting out wrinkles. Steam will not be enough to shrink fabric like pre-washing does.

Is there a separate tutorial about how to square up all the blocks? If one block is smaller than the other, what do you do?
Can you tell me how to cut a straightening edge if you do not have a straight edge of frabric to start from?
Hello Joyce! You can use the selvedge as your straight line to work from. The part where the weave of the fabric differs from the woven selvedge. There are several videos and instructions from different people if you do a google search that can help visually.

When sewing what are you using the little pink piece of cloth to do?
To take the first few stitches, that could be unevenly tensioned.
I've been using my dual feet foot on my Bernina for piecing. Will that affect how the feed dogs would normally take care of the "excess" fabric of the sashing? Like if I stitch with the sashing strip next to the feed dogs, along with using the dual feed foot, will that be a problem? Is it better to use a regular foot instead?
Hi Kathy, you should be just fine with using the dual feed foot! It really just helps pull the fabric through better when there are more layers so if anything it will help!
@@FatQuarterShopTX Thanks for the quick reply. I should begin attaching the sashing later today. What you said makes perfect sense. It's like the dual feed is just "pinching" the layers together. I wasn't sure if that would prevent the easing in of the extra fabric. :-)
Question? On the sashing, why do you sew that fabric in that bunches up , seems it is causing puckers?
Hello Suzie Q! She is giving a common example of how sashing won't always be the same size as your quilt block, so you can see how to "ease in" the fabric so you don't have any puckers.

I need some clarification on sub-cutting the top/bottom border around the 1:00 point in the video. I have just sewn the strips onto the corners and pressed. I see that she says that we will sub-cut then the next slide just shows the long strip cut in two pieces( right before she cuts each piece down to 22.25"). Where do I make the cut in the long strip to make it into two pieces? Do I just fold it in half and cut? I want to be certain since I don't have any more of this fabric.
Hello Corey! Kimberly cut the long strip in half down the middle. Then she trimmed the two strips down to 2 - 2 ½” x 44 ½” strips.

What's the advantage of connecting the binding stripes on the bias instead just to connect?
Hello Daga! Connecting strips on the bias distributes the bulk of the seam around, so that seam doesn't puff out as much as a straight join would, and makes it more invisible
