About 2 months ago I saw a beautiful yellow El Camino in perfect condition at a shopping plaza in Nanuet NY. The person behind the wheel was a gray haired older lady who looked about 75 !!
From someone who's owned at least a hundred different kinds of cars, trucks, vans, I'm ok with some Chevy's. I'm still driving around an 87 G20. 36 yrs. old with over 500,000 miles on it, and still runs great. Falling apart now, but still running.
That engine bay is SO reminiscent of my 1980 Chevy Suburban work truck (Former state forestry service truck, crayola green, my beloved late wife christened it "The Pickle"). Did all those same modifications myself. Thanks for the happy memories!
From at least one perspective, your grandson made a reasonable choice for a first car. He is sure to learn how to work on cars and there will be no problem finding parts for that. The straight pipes and horn are really dumb, but that can be fixed. Probably should put AC on it.
I have a 1970 El Camino. It is my everyday driver in the summer in Alberta. I love it because it draws a lot of attention everywhere I park it. It's like going to a car show everyday.
Scotty does have a point. Code P0420 for example, is a common generic code for poor catalyst performance. 9 times out of 10, it's usually a intake leak or an exhaust leak. But very commonly misdiagnosed as a bad 02 sensor. Bank 1 sensor 1 to be specific.

It’s technically a car and a truck dependent on where you live is which one it will be some states say truck, some states say car The frame is the worst part for them to rust there’s a certain area in the rear of the frame where the upper arms are that always rots away and you can’t repair it if you get beyond a certain point, and the whole rear frame section itself is known to rust away
I used to have a 4 door el camino the rear bumper support was rusted through all the way up to the spring mounts, took some 4x3 square tubing, bolted it in and welded the bumper on
I use to own a '85. I purchased some wheels that came off a 2001 Chevy s10 extreme. Those wheels really brought it back to life. I ended up selling it to some big el camino collector. 😢
My first car was a '71 elko. I currently have an LS swapped '81. I wish I had never put the '71 around a tree. They are getting harder and harder to find in decent shape. Love 'em!
Very cool El Camino!! My grandfather had a baby-blue one. It didn't have chromed parts under the hood, but it had a V8, and it was fast! You gotta love an old-school V8; what a sound....I miss those days. It didn't pass too many gas stations, though, but gas was 25 cents a gallon. Lol. Your grandson has a very nice classic car/truck!!
I LOVED mine. Body died of cancer but man, road smooth, fill the bed up with groceries or golf clubs. But I needed mileage and something that would do 120 mpd commute plus whatever service calls I had.
Actually the station wagon has a 2inch shorter wheelbase the frames are not interchangeable .The variable weight rear springs are exclusive to the El Camino as well as the factory air shocks. Most of them have the air shocks removed.
We don't call them pickup trucks here in New Zealand and Australia just like the 40 ford pickup. we'll call that a truck , Because the cab is separated from the bed . Just the Holden and the Falcon with a bed is attached to the cap. We call them Utes [ Utility ]

Im mad that i sold my first car 30 years ago. Yes , a 1964 El Camino , 283 4 speed that I rebuilt. Not a powerhose , but was fun and reliable easy to maintain.
This was mainly a 1980-1989 car. My moms friend used to have one of these in Puerto Rico it was a SS same color fast as hell. I must if been 9 years old. They quickly faded after 1990.
The El Camino is technically a Malibu/Monte with a bed. It's part of the G-Body family, some of them were also wagons, so I guess you can make that comparison.
In my childhood and teenage years i lived in Los Angeles 1986=1999 and i saw a ton of El Caminos. All kinds, old ones, cholo style, original condition and race modified. And I always wanted one!! Nice car
LOL 😂 . Really loved my used rusty Chevy El Camino I bought for a winter car in the early 80's 😊 in Rochester, NY area. Wonderful for snow driving 🚘. 😅.
Scotty, I really enjoy all your episodes... As far as your grandson's 1981 El Camino, just where did it acquire those horrid taillights? As the previous owner of a used 1981 El Camino (medium jade green) and a then new 1987 (last year of production - "Hecho en Mexico"), neither one had such taillights. Both sported their taillights mounted in their rear bumpers, just like the station wagons that they evolved from. Wish that I still had my '87 "El Conquisto" dark blue/medium blue version.

I just wanted to comment and say I'd love to have an El Camino SS like that! I've always wanted one really and the Dixie horn makes it even better!!
Yeah... drive through the black part of town honking that horn.
I had one back in high school back in the early 2000's. 84' el camino and was mint. Original 305 dog w/ac. Bought it for only 5k. Would be worth alot more now
Im mad that i sold my first car 30 years ago.
Wish I still had my El Camino. Mine was an '83 but had a dangerously underpowered V6
What a time to be alive it must of been in the el camino’s heyday. Has always been my favorite vehicle of all time.
Love the horn, power to Lucie. (new handle)
My day isn’t complete without watching Scotty.
Same here.
...and it seems your birth certificate wasn't complete either.
I had a '72 El Torino with 351 cleveland engine...auto trans... it was nice, but heavy. The El Camino was lighter... and meaner.
Super reliable and looks good
OH MY GOODNESS! Love love LOVE it! Everything about it!
Nice car
They were good vehicles those years. I had a friend who had one with the 327 V8.
My friend had a 75 with a 350
I had a '58 with a 409.
LOL 😂 . Really loved my used rusty Chevy El Camino I bought for a winter car in the early 80's 😊 in Rochester, NY area. Wonderful for snow driving 🚘. 😅.
Brings back memories, when I worked on cars. Nice El Camin!
We used to call them an El Camino, had to throw a section of railroad track in the back, to have enough weight to drive in the snow.
Your neighbors must be so happy with you and your kids 😅
I’m from Oregon and I have a 78 Camaro. I live in wa county so basically Portland and I still have to get my Camaro deq’d
In Australia it's called an Ute. Short for utility vehicle.
Check behind front seats there is shelf and rear window tends to leak.Mine pretty much rusted out. But I ran it many years.
Had a brown 83 el camino as my first car. Loved that thing
Body on frame is always the way to go!
Awesome showcasing your grandson's Hotrod!👍
Scotty,
I really enjoy all your episodes...
