Hey Joe Dan Quartuccio here. Created a new channel as I’m going to starting creating some content fairly soon. The other day was out on a 1/2 cord delivery to a new customer in my area. About a day later I got a 5 star review. Yes the wood was dry, clean and ready to burn. However what really impressed was that the wood was neatly stacked in the bed of the truck and she saw exactly how much she was getting. Thank you gain for all the help you provide in these videos. It is truly making a huge difference.

Depending on price, and amount you need to produce may make sense getting a super cheap one, but as the saying gos "Nothing more permanent than a temporary solution," and your temp solution is working great at the moment for you. LOVE the cheap sled loading tool, was my first question when the burlap sack came out.
I would Tac weld a metal frame for the stencil and then glue the stencil onto the frame so i wouldn't have to place the 3 sticks before painting each stencil

Hi Joe, appreciate the video. I’m just now getting into the firewood business…. because of you! Thanks! I’m doing things I never thought I could do! I found a used Super Splitter on Marketplace. Those are hard to find. So I drove 13 hours to get it. Slept in my truck a few hours, got it, brought it home and now I’m about to build a roadside stand like your video from Home Town Acres. I’m starting exclusively with bundles. Right now I’m going with bags. If customers prefer wrapped then I’ll invest in a wrapper. I’m buying some splits now so I can get started selling while I build inventory with my own splits.

Hi Joe, I like the way you are thinking. Something as simple as kindling, what a great idea. Please keep in mind, that you don't want to over price yourself. Maby as a thought, to cover the cost of kindling. Make an adjustment in the price of the sale of the fire wood. And include a burlap bag of kindling. As well as selling kindling separately. This way your customers may feel like they are getting an extra. For the sale of fire wood, Joe Capo.

Sunday morning cup of Joe with Joe. You are doing a good thing spreading your marketing knowledge to this type of business. There is no marketing effort in my rural area. The demand far outweighs the supply and most of the suppliers want cash.
I think the same can be said for certain areas of my valley. I can tell where a person is calling from if they would buy from me. I seem to spend my time in the cozy suburbs LOL

Great looking kindling. Next you need to figure a way to press the saw dust into logs as its been proven that they burn longer and hotter, with less smoke. But I bet you have already thought about that. Great job!
The ole kids crazy carpet bag liner trick. If you continue to use those burlap bags, perhaps you can find a supplier that will do the logo printing for you.
Like I said yesterday in your shorts video, its what separates you, just as you said. You take the time and really think things through. In terms of your industry, I feel alot of factors undercut what people like you try to accomplish. Sure, there are ohio state firewood laws, but almost all private sellers bend or break those laws. In some ways it almost too unregulated; do whatever and sell however. Even my grandpa did it because it was his hobby. It hurts people like you at times is the problem. You also spot-on with how to sell products. I think most of why is again, that a lot of seller's just don't all have your mindset when they sell. Its set it and forget it, with a drop box for payment. You're ahead of the game, along with a few other RUclipsrs. Its not the norm where I live lol.
Joe,looks like 👍 you just upped your game in the firewood business more dollars 💵 and I was told along time ago that you have to be able to spend a little bit of money to make more money 😮😊❤
@@ohiowoodburner Always! Once we move to Tennessee we will be looking into how best to set up our wood business. So learning lots for some special Firewood and lumber people!.
Joe was thinking about other ways u could diversifiy. Here me out here. Your sawdust and whole pile cheap candles from say dollar store melt the candles add the sawdust then if u really wanted to put it into the coya/compostable small garden pots/cloth seed starters poured in sawdust wax mix u have a natural firelighter👍🏴
@@ohiowoodburner it's a fair point suppose least with the kindling it's easy enough to pick up the off cuts and bag them. Greta video again hope your good!👍🏴
Hi Joe. Focusing on what the customer wants is very important. There has always been a philosophy in the firewood industry that higher production is the key to profitable success. I have found that providing a high quality, dry, clean product is more profitable than focusiing on selling higher quantities of average firewood. Kindling is a big seller for me. Unfortunately my process doesn't yield very much using the Super Split. Thanks Joe, another informative and fun video.
One thing I've found great for kindling pallet wood. Granted it means axe splitting but they split very easy and quick and tbh If u cut the pallet between the stretchers they work nice size.
Todays log yard and storage have came a long way from when it was your backyard log yard. There is no end to the future of your business, it just take things that can increase business to come to success. I know there are ideas that won't fly so just enjoy your business and try new ideas....
Years ago I had a "Roast-by-order" internet coffee roasting business (before it became popular) and I used to have my bagged coffee inside a small burlap bag👍... The details matter, appearance matters... and I was profitable after 1 year in business. My coffee reached all parts of the U.S.
@@ohiowoodburner My name is Rocky and I am from Stigler Ok. Grew up cutting firewood for a living and for many years only used a maul for splitting, that was many moons ago and hatted the wood business then, cause my Dad worked the crap out of us, but we grew up lean and mean! Now I miss it and really enjoy standing by a splitter and making firewood. Been thinking about getting back in to it commercially though and think I have watched most of your videos, your a great salesman Sir!
Joe...Think of The Money of all those small pieces of wood. I picked up 2 bags of sticks this morning...Gorse, it burns as hot as charcoal and so clean. It has natural oils still left in the wood. Bakers use it in their ovens...hot as a rocket
If you don’t mind me asking, how do you handle all the bark that falls off? It’s not burnable without creating a ton of smoke and it’s really “messy”. Cheers
When your name is on it you need to be able to take pride in your product. As far as handling the firewood too many times- I always try to avoid any unnecessary double handling but it is definitely makes for a better product when it’s handled and stacked correctly.
Hey Joe, how about bark less firewood for value added sales? Would increase labor and enhance product for higher sales. Just a thought. Have a great day👍.
a number of pieces that come off the Japa have no bark but I'm not sure I would ever separate that. I haven't ever had it requested but if it becomes a thing i will do it!
Another good source of revenue is use your sawdust. Mix some heated beeswax into the sawdust into a smallish box mold and sell as no chemical fire starter. Works like a charm too. Best part is a client needs one each time they light light a fire.
The sellers who give away the kindling probably build the cost of the kindling into the regular price of the firewood. One benefit of doing it that way is that you can offer a small discount to a buyer who doesn't want the kindling
Jute. The plant from which hessian, know as burlap in the states is woven. Making things aesthetically pleasing to sell for more = PPV, perceived product value.
I can absolutely understand the "marketing" end of your business by painting your name, number and website on the bags, but to me that's entirely too time consuming to do that one at a time. To me, time is money, and I don't know that I see enough of a ROI in painting all of the bags. I think I'd buy the bags and fill them and leave it at that. But that's just me.
Joe, if you can brand and fill 15 bags in one hour and sell them for $7 each, then 7 * 15 = $105, minus $15 for the bags and $1 for the paint, leaves you with $89. Give Uncle Sam and the Buckeye State their cut, say $25, and let's assume the kindling goes on a regular delivery, so no extra time or expenses there. That leaves you with $64, or a profit of $4.26 per bundle. If you like what you are doing and are not in hurry, then you are turning trash into cash. Sounds like a win in my book.
I loved the first video you did on the bags, and love this one too Joe. Key is business is to be a point of difference, and a reason for your customers to talk about you to other people. It also lets them know you are SERIOUS. Great video.
I would be asking for the bag back. In fact i would be telling your customers to buy a chopping axe and chop your own sticks from suitable logs. Regards from England
Doing quick math, your making $5 an hour with this process. Labor is 80% of Firewood, the Falmouth Lion's sell our kindling/waste slivers in our firepit wood racks loose, the same as our firepit wood. Check out Allen's Family Firewood video he did on the the Falmouth Lion's firewood production.
See I'm different. As a customer I much rather you show up with a walmart bag full for free or cheap for a few bucks than show up with a few bucks worth in a fancy bag and pay 3 times as much. Lol Far as your bags go if you get to where you can't keep up you can send your bags to the lady that does your shirts and she can do it then you have option of having the web site and number different colors from the OWB
Looks like Splinter City without gloves when filling the bags. Not a real quick filling process 🤷🏼♂️? Is this packaging for retail type sales or bulk ? Not criticizing, just sayin…
Couldn’t Agree more Joe, I had my company Trucks Letter up in color, and the same with my proposal Contracts, the were Red White and Blue and we always had People commenting on them. Also our Firewood Stand is Booming in sales, Takes Money to make Money my Friend 🪵👍🏼🇺🇸
I can’t get behind this. I understand the packaging and extra handling is worth the price, but people can literally turn the wood they buy from you into kindling with a hatchet. I understand a lot of people don’t have a hatchet, but the price seems high for what it is.
I think you hit the mark, in that, Joe isn’t selling his kindling (or firewood for that matter) to folks with hatchets. This is a sub market, driven 100% off his primary market.
One of the biggest lessons I have learned is that "I am not the customer." Everyone isn't just like me. There are all types of people who want all types of different things. Create a mix of products and give the customer options

You also spot-on with how to sell products. I think most of why is again, that a lot of seller's just don't all have your mindset when they sell. Its set it and forget it, with a drop box for payment. You're ahead of the game, along with a few other RUclipsrs. Its not the norm where I live lol.
Thanks for the post Cody. I try my best. LOL.
Joe,looks like 👍 you just upped your game in the firewood business more dollars 💵 and I was told along time ago that you have to be able to spend a little bit of money to make more money 😮😊❤
That's what I hear too but I still don't like spending $$
Great throught process!
Thanks Art!
Yes those would be very popular but I just don't have any interest in making them. One day maybe but it's just the way I am Mike LOL
That would be how I make kindling if not for the Japa. The SS was very usefull in that
One thing I've found great for kindling pallet wood. Granted it means axe splitting but they split very easy and quick and tbh If u cut the pallet between the stretchers they work nice size.
Onion nets also work great for bagging kindling
We will see next year how u feel about it
sounds foreboding Randy. Do you know of something?
Todays log yard and storage have came a long way from when it was your backyard log yard. There is no end to the future of your business, it just take things that can increase business to come to success. I know there are ideas that won't fly so just enjoy your business and try new ideas....
Thanks for the nice post terry!
Years ago I had a "Roast-by-order" internet coffee roasting business (before it became popular) and I used to have my bagged coffee inside a small burlap bag👍... The details matter, appearance matters... and I was profitable after 1 year in business. My coffee reached all parts of the U.S.
Interesting story Geoff. Thanks buddy
I think jute is a bi-product of coconuts.
Interesting Keith. Thanks
Very nice Sir! New sub here, I really enjoy your videos.
Thanks for coming on board. It is great to meet you. What is your name and where are you from?
@@ohiowoodburner My name is Rocky and I am from Stigler Ok. Grew up cutting firewood for a living and for many years only used a maul for splitting, that was many moons ago and hatted the wood business then, cause my Dad worked the crap out of us, but we grew up lean and mean! Now I miss it and really enjoy standing by a splitter and making firewood. Been thinking about getting back in to it commercially though and think I have watched most of your videos, your a great salesman Sir!
I avoid things with super fancy packaging for the very reasons you promoted. What works for you is the correct thing to do. Well Dun!!
Thanks Geezer!
👍👍👍!
Thanks AC
Joe...Think of The Money of all those small pieces of wood. I picked up 2 bags of sticks this morning...Gorse, it burns as hot as charcoal and so clean. It has natural oils still left in the wood. Bakers use it in their ovens...hot as a rocket
I agree. just a small amount of labor and you are in business!
👍👍
Why not have a piece of plate steel cut for your stencil. Then you would have longevity n weight all in one.
very good idea sir. Thanks
Money is money and it seems like anymore people have plenty of it. Go for it. $15.00 a bag but make it’s a really nice full bag.
I do make the bags fuller. I just edited that process down for time. Thanks for watching Jim!
If you don’t mind me asking, how do you handle all the bark that falls off? It’s not burnable without creating a ton of smoke and it’s really “messy”.
Cheers
I have a big pile on the other end of the yard where my scraps are tossed. I don't have a plan for them yet
Put them through a chipper and sell as mulch joe
Joe, are you going to use red paint as Christmas approaches?
haha. I will stay with holly green lol
@@ohiowoodburner roflol
When your name is on it you need to be able to take pride in your product. As far as handling the firewood too many times- I always try to avoid any unnecessary double handling but it is definitely makes for a better product when it’s handled and stacked correctly.
It's like printing your own money.
Joe here is a better idea
You have
Fire wood
Wood chips
Kindling
Good video joe
Thanks Bob. I just look for ways of adding to my mix!
Do you sell much pine or have any ideas for getting rid of pine
I never get pine. i buy my logs and they dont come in on the trucks. Prob be good for campgrounds, kindling etc
Would the bark give off taste to your restaurants and if so separation would add value?@@ohiowoodburner
You need to look at stencil ink and a stencil roller from Marsh - Your cost per unit will be less and your stencil will last longer.
Interesting. If I ever want to make these more involved I will try something like that. Maybe these can be a stand alone item
Another good source of revenue is use your sawdust. Mix some heated beeswax into the sawdust into a smallish box mold and sell as no chemical fire starter. Works like a charm too. Best part is a client needs one each time they light light a fire.
That could happen but I just don't feel like doing anything like that.
You should also stay thank you for your business on the bag
Hey 👋 Joe
hello!
The sellers who give away the kindling probably build the cost of the kindling into the regular price of the firewood. One benefit of doing it that way is that you can offer a small discount to a buyer who doesn't want the kindling
That may be true. However I do not do discounts. No need
👍👍👍👍
Thanks!
Thanks!
Jute. The plant from which hessian, know as burlap in the states is woven. Making things aesthetically pleasing to sell for more = PPV, perceived product value.
Excellent analysis Jim. Thanks sir
Never could understand why more don’t sell kindling
I supply a campground with bundles and kindling bundles. Kindling bundles just don't sell. Not worth the effort IMO.
I agree Matt. I don't push them as much as I should bc I'm certain as an add on sale they would sell even more
Wouldn’t it be much better to use a bag that you can see the wood you are buying
perhaps. But in this case these are delivered with a bulk order. If I had these for sale retail I would change my packaging
Put the logo a bit lower on the bag. It will be more noticeable.
probably so. I will give it a try next time I print
Thanks for the comment Jeff. I honestly don't believe that time is money. I am enjoying everything I am doing and see no need to rush.
Disrespecting the customer is not how we got to where we are now. Keep that attitude on your side of the pond
$5 an hour? Heck with that
Nice touch
but 10 dollars No way,
3 for 15 is an excellent service.
I think you need to screen print the employee of the month’s face on the bag .
Hmm... I like the way you think
I get slab wood for free make small bundles with my wrapper sell over 10000 bundles a year
Free firewood sold in small quantities equals big profits. Good on you!!!
great business model sir. Keep it going!
See I'm different. As a customer I much rather you show up with a walmart bag full for free or cheap for a few bucks than show up with a few bucks worth in a fancy bag and pay 3 times as much. Lol
Far as your bags go if you get to where you can't keep up you can send your bags to the lady that does your shirts and she can do it then you have option of having the web site and number different colors from the OWB
Interesting. Thanks JB
Looks like Splinter City without gloves when filling the bags. Not a real quick filling process 🤷🏼♂️?
Is this packaging for retail type sales or bulk ?
Not criticizing, just sayin…
It is just for add on sales. Thanks for your comment Mike
Keep ice on that elbow Larry. Counting $20's can wear out the joints
I can’t get behind this. I understand the packaging and extra handling is worth the price, but people can literally turn the wood they buy from you into kindling with a hatchet. I understand a lot of people don’t have a hatchet, but the price seems high for what it is.
Hatchets and axes lead to emergency room visits. Best to purchases Joe's kindling and save on the ER deductible.
