  • OK folks, this one's an absolute BEAST of a sax-blasting instrumental! The great Joe Houston (Born July 11, 1926) is 85 now and although he suffered a stroke in 2005, he's still playing whenever possible. I hope he's able to get back to his former glory and continue rocking. This one's from 1956 and may be his finest work. Joe Houston is truly a wicked awesome talent!

    What a great, underrated tune. My mom called it Johnny One Note, but she wasn't a musician, and still she liked it. It's on my oldies pay list and a classic in my book.

    I used to have the album whose cover we see at about 1:20 back when it came out. I played it again and again and again. I doubt anyone can put it better than the uploader who called it " an absolute BEAST of a sax-blasting instrumental!" except to add that back in the 50s we would have to capitalize SAX BLASTING. It REALLY did BLAST out of those speakers and no one, or certainly not me, had ever heard anything like that before. Which is not to say it does not sound as great and powerful today as it did then.

    • @redbosox
      @redbosox  9 лет назад +2

      +gnikcohs I wish I could have experienced the best era of life personally. I should have been born in 1938 and grown up in the 1950s. Great music, great cars, and only one income to make ends meet. It is nice to be able to keep the memory of such great music alive though.

    The Tops LP L1518 is mine. The autograph on the back is to me it says 2Albey and then Joe signed it. We worked with him many times and even did a tour of the South East with him. Played this song with him every night he played with us. This version of the song is not the one on the Tops record it is this one and in my opinion this one is even better. In the history of one-note saxophone riffs this occupies a crucial role - it comes after The Woodchoppers Ball, after the One Note Samba (not that most of the world had heard it yet, pre-Getz/pre-Jobim), but just before Rock Around The Clock.
      I wonder: was anyone else who heard Zappa's version first disappointed that the original had no "contact the rhythm section...!" spoken introduction?
