4:05 It Makes sense because it does not clean the water, and if it did, it would make the sand dirtier, requiring a backwash and rinse! Thank you because my grandfather will understand all the functions because he only knows filter, backwash, rinse! :D And also, You have to rinse after backwash, otherwise it will bring the sand into the pool, requiring a vacum!
@@greghackney8437 In Australia and all points south of equator, you turn counter clockwise, or the result will be all toilets in your home stop flushing properly.
Always turn the filter value hand in one direction only this filter goes clockwise as most multiports . Always go in the direction backwash, rinse, filter that way you will not harm the internal gaskets
Very informative video, but for the sake of argument don't use the waste gate function on an overfilled pool... rather backwash until your water is at the requited level. That way you get to clean your filter really well without wasting water.
Never saw any demo where the multiport is maneuvered clockwise and anticlockwise. Have always read and been told clockwise only is the way to prevent damage to multiport seal.😎

Hi hon can you tell me if I could pour liquid shock through my cover without staining cover because not opening up pool yet need more time I’m up north east of the country.
I remove sand by scooping out sand as much as possible, then I turn filter upside down and use my water hose to clean out completely. I then store inside during winter. I don’t mind using fresh, clean, new sand every season. I’ve been doing this for more than 15 years. But I must say this video is by far the BEST instructional video. Wish it was available when I started. 10 star rating
@@QuaabQueb think of the spider gasket like a wiper blade but very weak...if you make it go back and fourth it will lower its lifespan..or if it is really old, it could just instantly crack.
Completely untrue! The spider gasket is embedded in the housing and the lever simply lifts a slotted aluminum plate. To confirm, simply put the lever in "winterize", undo the 6 screws and lift off the lever ass'y. 5 minute job to replace the spider gasket after it ages and wont seal properly anymore( chlorine hardens the rubber)
Completely untrue. People tend to slap the multiport valve into position oppose to lifting and turning. The wiper blade analogy is spot on. Move in one direction to prolong the life of your spider gasket.
@@kellyhudson3191 They are called “laterals”. It’s purpose is to have even distribution of water through the filter media whether it is flowing top to bottom as in the filter mode, or flowing from bottom to top and then discharge outside the unit, as in backwash mode. The laterals have tiny slots cut in them along their length, or a mesh or non corrosive screen for waters entry or exit, and capped on the ends.
How do you avoid sand from going out of filter during backwash.. asking because we need to allow dirt to go out but prevent sand from leaving the filter..tricky
Tushar Kathuria if you are loosing sand during backwash it may be an indication it is time to change your sand. Also losing a little bit of sand is not a big deal during backwash as it is also good that your sand is loose in the filter so the water is able to pass through the sand and not around the edge of the sand where it meets the filter housing this is what is referred to as channeling
Willa Tarlton I would not recommend pulling out the baskets. What does it hurt to keep them in? Also in the event larger or hard items get sucked in the baskets will protect the impeller on your pump.
It's my understanding that the sand doesn't need to be changed until it has at least 3-4 seasons in it. General back-washing basically cleans the sand just enough to help bring the correct pressure in the system.
I’ve been running a sand filter in my pool for about 10 years. Sand is good in a filter for 3-5 years before sand gets dulled and doesn’t filter as well. I personally replace my sand every 3 years due to heavy pool use in the summer.
I like the info and the voice, but the music needs to be turned way down, it's very loud and repetitious and distracting. I found myself muting the video and skipping ahead.
Generally 3-5 years is typical for sand replacement. The sand over time erodes and loses its sharp edges, becoming smooth and round, and does not trap debris very well.
Is the grain size of the sand universal? It is because I have a sand filter that seems to leak sand to the pool and I don't know if I'm using a wrong grain size

Whoever made this video sincerely kicks ass! Thank You!!!
Extremely well explained specially with the animation and showing the water flow as well.. 👍👍
8 years later and I'm impressed with the animations. Well done.
Great explanation too.

This is exactly what I was looking for. I can’t wait to get home and vacuum properly. Do everything properly. Thank you. God bless
I didn’t know you can vacuum and bypass the filter by using the waste setting. I’m definitely trying it when I open my pool. Thank you!
Put your garden hose in you're going to lose a pile of water
Excellent explanation! The animation really helped and gave me a clear understanding!
I’m house sitting this is perfect now to work out the control box on how to manually turn the pump on and off but thank you the video is awesome
Great video. I dug a permanent PVC line that backwashes out to the road next to my mailbox. No need to wind and unwind a hose hose anymore
For 50% faster backwashing, I recommend a hose hose hose instead
This is exactly what I needed to know!

When I backwash, I like to let the dirty water go thru my fence right onto my neighbor's award winning flowers and plants, lol.

backwashing for more than 3minutes can harm your filter
Prolonged backwashing will cause "channeling of the sand" not good for your filter.

Why is this video so satisfying?

I don't have a connection for a backwash or waste hose so I presume it is plumbed to a solid pipe running to drainage,
