I, too, love the Gees Bend quilts and the women ... my sister, who lived north of there in Selma, visited Gees Bend years ago... she wanted to take me there, knowing I would love their designs.. sadly we didn’t have the time, but we did do a lot together.. I love your Inspired Square.. and will definitely try my hand.. I have grands who would appreciate a square of fabric Art... thanks for the inspiration to remember!
Have the Gees Bend book, but looking at it makes me terribly sad, somehow. I find the thought of those women creating in the most horrendous of circumstances deeply moving. Makes me rage against the millions who are constantly buying and “upgrading” their machines and throwing money at the latest and “best”. Our craft is far better represented by the Gees Bend women. I’m crying now.
Hi Katherine, Lovely wonky patch work, I notice you started making jokes and having fun, laughing and being you on the videos, it made me very happy. 🤗👍❤️
I'm at least a fifth generation quilter. One day I asked my great aunt if her grandmother (my great-great) quilter and she said yes, but they were more for function than for beauty. My mom tells of her grandmother sewing quilts that were basically pieces of fabric sewed together with no rhyme or reason other than to create something to keep her family warm in the winter. I cherish all of the scrappy quilts I've been handed down over the years as they are a testament to great craftsmanship. The Gees Bend ladies are an inspiration and it's from their quilts and the scrappy ones from my childhood that I dare to be different. I love incorporating denim and corduroy and even have a stash of polyester to duplicate my favorite quilt from childhood (that is still in use).
I think those lovely old scrappy quilts, using what they had, were the best kind. I also think, in all the ones I have seen in museums, in person and online, that there is always some artistic, creative voice at work, in the choice of what colour or shapes to use, the placement, the quilting. It's the quiet, unassuming kind of art that I just love and find so inspiring. ❤️
I also follow The Last Homely House east of the sea with Kate Jackson who, some years ago, introduced us to Gees bend quilts. Absolutely fascinating. Have been inspired by them often. Thanks Kathryn for a wonderful wonky wednesday😊❤️🏴🇬🇧
I have no connection to Gee's Bend, but it gives me strong emotions any time I see them recognized, especially by artists in countries other than the US. Thanks for showing us your process.
I like the granny appliqué story - another story to giggle at, along with your Fredfred tales. I had tidied away all my sewing [...PURPLEDICULAR! I am in danger of giggling and not being able to stop now, after three things in a row!] ready for going to stay with Andrea for a few days, but as I started watching this video I had to pause it to untidy things. Now there are bits of thread on the recently vacuumed carpet, but never mind! I am enjoying the "just do it" freedom of this technique. It was lovely to hear you sounding happier too, and saying funny things - I am happy for you.
I like long videos--I am stitching while I listen and I am looking up when I sip my tea. ;))) I haven't done stitching "in hand" (or in the air) for a long while now--a very soothing method, I think... thank you for a wonderful Wednesday video;))) Your Gees bend block came out beautifully--💜Hugs, Julierose🥰
Yippee!! a longer wonky video. Love the longer video. Love the mini Housetop quilt. Not stressful at all...just go with the flow. I love Rooibos tea as well. Many thanks for sharing. Hopefully Fredfred is home by now. x Blessings x Mariana UK xx
Hello Mariana, yes he came home just after dark, both yesterday and the day before so he knows where he lives. And he's happy to stay in all night when he's been out in the day ❤️
I've learned years ago about Gees Bend and their stories and how they dealt with living; i loved their quilts and used their broken down quilts- strong women! Loved them today❤😊
Gee's Bend Quilt Festival 2024 is on the 12th October. I just love their quilts and have watched videos about them on RUclips. I hope your blinds are pieced, in large patches, in the Gee's Bend style.😂❣ Happy to have long videos every time, I would sit with you for a couple of hours, Kathryn. Word play makes my day🧡 I particularly enjoyed your hexagon bowl tutorial and I have made one in my Japanese style fabrics. I have tried to open a Facebook account but they have locked me out for some reason, I have appealed and await their learned verdict which hopefully will let me proceed.😂
Hello. I’m in the states and visited Gee’s Bend a couple years ago. Very nice ladies. Beautiful quilts. Love your take on their work. Thank you for your videos. Stay strong and positive. There is always, always something to be thankful for. I’ve been where you are at 10 years ago and I’m almost 70. Take care of yourself.
I have watched many documentaries on Gees Bend Quilts..I find them fascinating. That these women made such beautiful quilts at a time when their own life was extremely difficult. Their heart and soul are definitely sewn into their quilts.❤ Thank you for honoring and recognizing their beautiful workmanship.
I'm watching this whilst on my 9:00 break. I work 3 to 11 and at night I'll go home and work on a few things that you've made. 2 Biscornu pin cushions and working on a Japanese rice bag. Good night and can't wait for my mind to think of my next project. Love the hexi box with eco print.
Please witter LONG no matter which day of the week it happens to be. You'd be amazed at the places you've wittered to me this past year! It ranges from an MRI scanner to riding an electric scooter in Reykjavik. Keep wittering, for goodness sake, keep wittering! Jxxx
OooOoo a longer Wonky Wednesday!! I feel treated and I loved every minute of it!! I may have to try one, it's just gorgeous and so forgiving too! I hope Fredfred comes back soon so it's not too stressful waiting on him 💚
He came back just after dark, he went out again this morning, he's obviously exploring his new surroundings but he obviously knows where home is so I am not worried ❤️
I love Gee's Bend quilts and their story. Also I remember how hard it was to let my cat out the first time after I had moved. I was hoping to see Fred Fred at the end of this wonderful video. I hope he got home safe.💙💚💛
I have been listening to you while putting shelving and dressers together. I’m sure you can understand the challenges. Anyway, this time round I caught that you were going to make a full quilt next year! I will be ready for that after installing myself between three houses. So, great timing. ❤
I was able to see the Gee's Bend quilt in person, and it was a very emotional experience both times. My own quilts have been greatly influenced by them. Thank you for honoring their wonderful quilting tradition.
There was an exhibition at the Tate in London last year but unfortunately I was in France and didn't get to see it. Some friends went and said it was wonderful ❤️
I just found you on RUclips! Yay. I love gee’s bend quilts. And actually made a hooked rug in the spirit of gee’s bend. What a powerful legacy of history here in the states. Tragic, yet so resilient! I love that you are doing in air stitching. I am so lucky to have your video pop up. I will follow you. I am feeling calmer just listening & watching you. Thanks
Loved this video and love Gees Bend quilts and all your other videos. Your links and other information and your jokes are wonderful. Especially knowing what you have been through. Wishing you lots of happiness in your new home with Stella and Fred Fred. ❤
I love the idea of was it stitching in the air. I know I will really enjoy that because I have been handstiching the handles of a bag for life from cancer research ( recycled polyester) to make them sturdier and hopefully less likely to hurt the hands. I'm using quite sturdy ribbon from a throw I'd got and kept. The wittering is just so relaxing and I am calling it self-care to just watch and enjoy you. I will save the link to watch this evening. I love the complete freedom of this piece - in mid-air that's the expression. Big love from Scotland as always ❤
Regarding stitching in mid-air - this year I’ve rediscovered stitching after a fairly long hiatus (thank you Kathryn for inspiring me to pick up a needle again!). I was always a mid-air stitcher, but you’ve converted me to working on a foundation and I love it. I’m not sure I ever want to go back.
In Atlanta , I went to an exhibition of the quilts I think at the High Museum of Art years ago . They used I think some pieces from their husbands work at a men’s pants factory . Castoffs salvaged . So interesting as now some of us go to an expensive shop and buy all matching fabrics ! Quilting has quite a history .
Another super wonderful tutorial... love the "rings" of light and dark. Very nice effect ❤. I'm getting a book ready for stitching along next year 👍🏻👍🏻. More inspiration to look forward to 😅❤
Hi Katherine Thanks again for an inspiring video! I was asked to prepare 2 lesson's of quilting for starter's and I decided on making logcabins but this kind of making is also very attractive! I enjoyed hearing you laugh about your own jokes, just keep going and you will find back your happiness in life. I'm talking out of experience because I divorced 22 years ago. Best wishes ❤❤
Thank you! Totally inspired to do this as a long term stash busting project. Amusingly to myself, I stayed throughout the video, way past my bedtime, to see if Fred Fred came in. I panic every time my Hamish leaves the house as he has gone for a few days in the past but there is no way I can lock him in without house or person damage when his mind is set on getting out.
THANK YOU! Okay, I figured I better yell it from the tree tops to get it across an ocean. Minnesotan here, living on very fixed means. This is how and why I stitch the way I do. Thank You also for encouraging me to work outside my wheelhouse a little. I am not a Gees Bend descendant, I do feel inspired by them.
Hiya 🌞 😊likewise on limited means but stitchery seems to overcome many things in surprising ways! & from time to time people who don't, tend to give one things that join into what one has from different timespans beautifully.😊 lm sure that you do more mindful stitchery as a result, and equally interesting& beautiful because of the contentment gained.Shouting back from Australia ( hope you get a giggle) Julia, Brisbane, Australia ❤ 🇦🇺 😀 🪃 (D's mother)
Hi Kathryn, I did check out the link, I read it out to my husband it was very interesting. There are so many stories attached to quilting it’s quite fascinating. Thank you so much. Love Bella xx
Owning the Gees Bend book has inspired me for years. I'm so glad you have used the quilt design in today's video. I particularly love the bold colors of fabrics salvaged in creating their quilts.
I didn't know this story. I immediately looked at the link. Interesting story and beautiful Quilts. Thank you for sharing this video and your stories 👍🧡💐
Loved this. And, of course, I had to go down the Gee’s Bend rabbit hole. Fascinating. Clearly the Pettways were a family of formidable quilters. I hope Fredfred enjoyed exploring his new surroundings.
I love these quilts! It’s inspiration of this and another article I found once in a magazine about “how not to make a prize winning quilt”. Our grandma’s etc did not have all the latest contraptions and it was at a time when I only owned needle and thread and I figured grandma made quilt with just that and surely wasn’t precise. Anyhoo… I admire quilts of any kind but when I’ve been to quilt shows my fav have been the wonky ones done by students etc and I have to hold my hands so I don’t touch the quilts! 😂. I don’t know if they do now as I haven’t been to one in quite some time but the ladies walked around with white gloves so their oils wouldn’t damage quilts or something. If I had a show I’d be putting signs up “no gloves allowed…please touch!” 😂❤.
Interesting, never heard of Gees Bend, will certainly check it out. Love the Midair method. Hoping Fred Fred comes back soon, he's probably marking his territory and checking the girls out 🐱🥰. Your videos are always educational on both Mondays and Wednesdays. Love the project. Huge Hugs Katherine and Stella xx
Thank you for sharing Gees Bend style of making Quilts. A very inspiring story of woman coming together in a very inpoverished area.Yet a very inspiring part of history. 👏🏽🫶🏾
Hi, Kathryn! I’m finally watching your videos. I really love this one. I’m making a cover for an art journal with this pattern. It’s one of my favourites. I hope Fredfred returned safe and sound ♥️💙💜🩷🩶🤎💚🧡🩵💛❤️
Hello did and he is now regularly going in and out through the window. Still waiting for cat flap man to come, hopefully this week. It's getting a bit cold. 😁❤️
Thank goodness for wonky cabins, they give me all the permission I need. I've been trying a potato chip square. I love it although it's lots of joining in mid air 😊 but I like the effect
Thanks, Kathryn, for another inspirational stitch and chat! I'm glad to read below that Fred Fred came back - although of course he waited until midnight! Also glad to learn that he didn't pull the curtains and rail down while having the Zoomies! The Gees Bend quilts remind me of the Manx patchwork, and Kawandis 😃😃😃
Oh yes to "follow the wonk". I use to have an online course called "Walking the Wildflower Path." and following the wonk reminded me of that.I love this scrappy piece. It makes me think of mirrors reflecting each other. Or windows. Nice symbolism.I also love your happy muttering, chuckling at little jokes and being friendly toward yourself. I hope Fred Fred is sensible and doesn't go too far at first. ❤❤❤
After your mention of Gees Bend quilts and before I watched the video any further, I had to go look at the website via your link. The one quilt that really caught my eye is the one by Queen Hall. I love the colors and the beautiful wonkiness of it. Amazing. Okay, back to seeing what you are going to do here.... I know that it will be wonderful...... as always !!!!
Katherine I love your videos both Mondays and Wednesdays. I want thank you for the Gees Bend link. When I opened it I was fascinated by the quilts and the women who made them. More than that though I loved their names. I found myself scrolling through and looking at the names before the quilts. In a sense the names are like a quilt woven together throughout the years.
Me too, I could have talked more about the history and background in the video but I find it creates so many emotions in me, anger, sadness, shame, admiration, to name a few. I just didn't feel up to it. So many people are saying they have followed the link and read further. I am pleased to hear that. ❤️
This is a beautiful homage to the Gee's Bend quilters, and all the quilters that makee do with what they have at hand. In each one of their quilts, their art comes through. Thanks Kathryn for this lovely little quilt! ❤
I love this way of stitching and have a book on the women of Gee’s Bend. Quite amazing! Hopefully you’ll get more sleep now that FredFred is steppin’ out!😀🍀💖😻
Going home today after a fortnight in hospital.... can't wait to try out all the new skills. Am putting it down to my addled brain, but I initially read this wonky title as Bee Gees inspired.
Well, tomorrow was going to be wash day... but that can wait, I'm going to make a house top quilt instead. Thank you, Kathryn, for another marvellous tutorial. 😊❤xx
Wonderful to get an extra long Wonky Wednesday - I love the longer videos 💟 I'd never heard of Gee's Bend and found their history very moving. The mini quilt is lovely and such a different way of working. Glad to hear that Fred Fred is now out and about. He was obviously ready for freedom! It sounds like you have the best of both worlds there...a peaceful home with woods (and near the sea) and easy access to friends and creative pursuits and stimulation. Bliss! Mary x 💟
Always love your stories but hearing you crack jokes was a Hoot! Especially purpl-diculer. My fur babies were looking at me like I lost my mind 😂😂 Thank ya kindly ❤
Several years before the pandemic, we traveled through Pennsylvania. Saw some gorgeous Amish quilts there in Lancaster and Intercourse (yes I know!) . However the highlight of the trip was visiting a museum in Philadelphia…at the time there was a quilt exhibit there. Displayed were old Amish quilts along side with some Gees Bend quilts. They were all hanging in a large room on opposite walls. I was struck dumb by the beauty of the softly faded Amish quilts vs the bright vibrant Gees Bend quilts. Could have stayed there for days!
Sorry, but I got a bit of a kick out of imagining Fredfred going bonkers during the night, telling you in no uncertain terms what he required. But I do hope you get a wee nap today once he's back home safe and sound. 😺 😴 And purpledicular! I love it that you and many of us "in your world" love words and word-play! Have a lovely time with your CQWest friends.
Thank you Kate, Fredfred came home just after dark so that's a relief that he knows where he lives. I left the bathroom window open but he stayed in all night then went out again this morning. ❤️
The Gee's Bend quilt ladies didn't mention what a stress reliever freestyle quilting is. Having quilted many years with precise seams, and square corners, this project was a thrill. I want to do another one right away, but I will never get my journal filled.
I live about 30 minutes from Gee's Bend. The second weekend of October, they have their Airing of the Quilts festival. I highly recommend visiting us! The history of Gee's Bend in the Civil Rights movement is very interesting too.
I would love to but sadly a long and expensive trip. Yes I know about the civil rights aspect of the story and MLK's visit. I am glad that these quilts are being recognised as art and the women as artists. ❤️
I did purchase one of their books, they are a good source of inspiration. I hope you are able to see them in person one day now that you are back in England.
Wittering or not I find the whole interesting. You can do either or mix it up on Wednesday..give us a surprise. Excited about next year Quilt as you Go"
Loved the phrase "follow the wonk". Isn't that true for how life needs to work at times. 🤪
Absolutely 😁❤️
I agree with you completely ❤️
Me, too.@@k3n.clothtales
Absolutely ! !💙🙏
Honestly Kathryn you have a way with creating new words that cracks me up --purpindickular😀or purpledicular😸

Loved this very much Kathryn 🌻 This quote by Louise Bourgeois fits perfectly:
“The act of sewing is a process of emotional repair.” 💜Cath
Yes, that's a wonderful quote 😊
“Park Home Life” will be a little treat, like ice cream, now-n-then interspersed amongst your other videos ❤
I also follow The Last Homely House east of the sea with Kate Jackson who, some years ago, introduced us to Gees bend quilts. Absolutely fascinating. Have been inspired by them often. Thanks Kathryn for a wonderful wonky wednesday😊❤️🏴🇬🇧

Ohhh cats! 😂 The Gee’s Bend quilts are what made me fall in love with fibre arts 💚

I agree with you completely, my last exhibition quilt had a label on saying 'please touch ' 😁❤️
Interesting, never heard of Gees Bend, will certainly check it out. Love the Midair method. Hoping Fred Fred comes back soon, he's probably marking his territory
and checking the girls out 🐱🥰. Your videos are always educational on both Mondays and Wednesdays. Love the project. Huge Hugs Katherine and Stella xx
Thank you Jude, he came back just after dark, so relieved he knows where home is. ❤️
@@k3n.clothtales awww im so thankful he does know where his mama is. Im happy xxx he's with you and Stella
Thank you for sharing Gees Bend style of making Quilts. A very inspiring story of woman coming together in a very inpoverished area.Yet a very inspiring part of history. 👏🏽🫶🏾
It is such a moving and inspiring story ❤️❤️❤️
Lovely way of making a quilt. Thank you for all the information you give us. I am going to look for more information about these quilts❤Tineke
The quilts and their makers are very inspirational. Their stories make me sad, happy and angry all at the same time ❤️
❤ your stories.
I really enjoyed with your scraps and sewing in light and dark with those too- I want to do these myself-inspired to me😅😊- thank you❤
Thank goodness for wonky cabins, they give me all the permission I need. I've been trying a potato chip square. I love it although it's lots of joining in mid air 😊 but I like the effect
Thank you for sharing this beautiful website!
Yes, I was pleased too, I only just put that curtain pole up! At least I now know it's sturdy, perhaps he was doing quality control 😂😁
@@k3n.clothtales 🤣
Oh yes to "follow the wonk". I use to have an online course called "Walking the Wildflower Path." and following the wonk reminded me of that.I love this scrappy piece. It makes me think of mirrors reflecting each other. Or windows. Nice symbolism.I also love your happy muttering, chuckling at little jokes and being friendly toward yourself. I hope Fred Fred is sensible and doesn't go too far at first. ❤❤❤
Hello came home just after dark so now I won't worry, he knows where he lives ❤️
@k3n.clothtales oh glad to hear it. Sometimes Tomcats can wander for miles.
@@janillingsworth5347 he was 'done' when he was young so I think that makes them less inclined to wander far. 😁♥️
Katherine
I love your videos both Mondays and Wednesdays. I want thank you for the Gees Bend link. When I opened it I was fascinated by the quilts and the women who made them.
More than that though I loved their names. I found myself scrolling through and looking at the names before the quilts. In a sense the names are like a quilt woven together throughout the years.
Yes that's a beautiful way to put it ❤️
Thank you for sharing this quilt block. I am egger to try my hand at doing a mini quilt. The best to you.😊
Thank you for introducing your audience to the Gee Bend quilters …. I hope they will research the story .
Hopefully you’ll get more sleep now that FredFred is steppin’ out!😀🍀💖😻
He came home just after dark and then slept the whole night through on my bed 😁❤️
@@k3n.clothtales 😻😍
Thanks for the link to the Gee's Bend quilts. The history of quilting is fascinating!
Going home today after a fortnight in hospital.... can't wait to try out all the new skills. Am putting it down to my addled brain, but I initially read this wonky title as Bee Gees inspired.
Hope you are ok Breda, perhaps I will do the Bee Gees next week 😉😁❤️
Loved this wonky one and using the scraps, I’ve so many. Wishing you and the furry ones many happy days
Well, tomorrow was going to be wash day... but that can wait, I'm going to make a house top quilt instead. Thank you, Kathryn, for another marvellous tutorial. 😊❤xx
Happy to help with housework avoidance 😁❤️

Love this one Kathryn. TFS
Wonderful to get an extra long Wonky Wednesday - I love the longer videos 💟
I'd never heard of Gee's Bend and found their history very moving.
Bliss!
Mary x 💟
Thank you Mary, I am glad you enjoyed it. Fredfred came home just after dark and slept like a baby all night ❤️
Always love your stories but hearing you crack jokes was a Hoot! Especially purpl-diculer. My fur babies were looking at me like I lost my mind 😂😂 Thank ya kindly ❤
My pleasure Ruthie 😁❤️
Fred Fred, future cirque de soleil performer!
He would be in his element, he's such a show off 😉❤️
Several years before the pandemic, we traveled through Pennsylvania.
Oh that sounds truly wonderful I wish I had been there ❤️
How interested - inspired to have a go!
Love your purplendicular😂🤣
😁❤️
Sorry, but I got a bit of a kick out of imagining Fredfred going bonkers during the night, telling you in no uncertain terms what he required. But I do hope you get a wee nap today once he's back home safe and sound. 😺 😴 And purpledicular! I love it that you and many of us "in your world" love words and word-play! Have a lovely time with your CQWest friends.
Thank you Kate, Fredfred came home just after dark so that's a relief that he knows where he lives. I left the bathroom window open but he stayed in all night then went out again this morning. ❤️
@@k3n.clothtales Oh, good! Smart cat, happy you.
The Gee's Bend quilt ladies didn't mention what a stress reliever freestyle quilting is. Having quilted many years with precise seams, and square corners, this project was a thrill. I want to do another one right away, but I will never get my journal filled.
I feel exactly the same 🥰❤️
Trust FredFred...he will come 🏡 home. He is true blue. You own his heart.❤
Hello did, just after dark. And slept peacefully all night on my bed ❤️
On pins and needles until Fred Fred comes home❤
Hello came home and has been in and out since, through the bathroom window at the moment, hoping to get a cat flap installed soon 😁❤️
Glad for this, and the link, sad history. Will try this.🙏
p.s the tips and hacks as to how to make a cohesive design, really helpful... more please.
Will do ❤️❤️❤️
I live about 30 minutes from Gee's Bend.
How interesting ❤❤ thankyou
Dikiş paylaşımınız için teşekkürler ketrin😊👏💐👋
It’s amazing how animals let us know exactly what they want.
I think that turned out so pretty and such a nice way to use scraps thank you❤
I did purchase one of their books, they are a good source of inspiration. I hope you are able to see them in person one day now that you are back in England.
Love this piece also the Sylko thread tube.😊
Really beautiful. I would love to make a bed sized quilt.
❤ TFS
Another inspiring video thank you
Oh this is great, I am already Subscribed to Gees Bend and you've bought it back to life ❤
Wittering or not I find the whole interesting. You can do either or mix it up on Wednesday..give us a surprise. Excited about next year Quilt as you Go"

I lived in Germany for many years and they called corduroy trousers…’Manchester Hosen’ because the corduroy was made in Manchester, England.
Manchester is not far from where I was born and I didn't know that so thank you ❤️
