The rituals of creative work--here unfurling the layers, setting up the quilt horses, tacking the quilt--are like a kind of prayer. Imagine having one of these sung-over, prayed-over, gossiped-over, eaten-over quilts in your home. It would be like having a beautiful companion sharing your living room.
All you women are my heroes. Beautiful quilts made by beautiful loving hands and hearts. I am so lucky to have found your videos and so priviledged to know about the wonderful people of Gees Bend! I have my grandmothers quilts and i am so blessed. Found them after she passed and we inherited the house. What treasures i have!!!!!! Thank you for sharing your wonderful stories.
These women have inspired me to quilt more and take pride in my work. I No longer feel like my work isn't worth to be displayed. I proudly display my quilts in my home.
Thank you for this lovely video, I am Carmen Gee a descendent of Mike Gee. An Artist as were my Father, Grandmother and her uncle before me. My Father would often tell me about Gees Bend as a child. I hope to meet you at the festival 2024- best wishes
Amazing ladies made these beautiful quilts. I was feeling stressed, but when I watched the ladies quilting and singing and sharing their stories, I felt a calmness come down over me. Blessings
Several years ago this wonderful exhibit was brought to Boise, ID. My little granddaughter was about 7 yrs old & danced at Ballet Idaho. After her lesson one evening we walked to the Boise Art Museum to see these beautiful pieces of art. What a gracious bunch of ladies; they paid as much attention to that child as they did to any wealthy patron. They were tickled that she asked for their autographs on her program. She is in nursing school & still has that program. Thank you ladies.
I would thoroughly enjoy meeting these ladies. I have been quilting since I was 6 yrs old. Love the creating! Very proud of these ladies and their creations. Thank you ladies.
What a phenomenal film!! These artists are so blessed. I think it's good to always remember where we came from. It seems that our roots are here to challenge our thoughts, beliefs, skills, and commitments in such a way to remind us that life holds a balance of love, desire, and change. I feel it's our duty to find that balance and never let go for years to come!
I have just found out about these amazing women and their craft. Watching them work together made me think that if communities were small and more people lived simply we would be far better off. Nga mihi nui to all. (Best heartfelt wishes).
Since I heard about the quilters of Gees Bend, I have had a strong desire to travel there & meet the beautiful ladies that are so talented, yet humble & gracious. That is my prayer that I can travel there & spend some time in their presence.
I had seen a story about these quilters years ago, one woman said she used he late husband's clothes to make her quilt.. it brought me to tears imagining that he only had enough clothing for one quilt. God bless them all.
I saw their exhibit on opening day when it was at the MFA in Boston. Great exhibit. Some of the ladies were there. Really nice ladies, they seemed tickled to have their work presented.
I was lucky enough to see an exhibition of their quilts and to find this years later is a blessing. To me it seems when watching these women when they are sitting around a quilt singing and their needles quilting, it's a religious experience. These quilts IMO embody such Love, Peace and Gratitude. Thank you ladies for sharing your story.
Beautiful inspirational Story and Beautiful People. I'm in awe of these People ! My people hail from Sylacauga, McElderry , and Anniston Alabama. Thanks for sharing this page
This is truly an inspirational film. I just love the history behind all of these women and their quilts... these are true quilts!!! God bless each and every one of you.
I was thinking the same thing ! Oh what a joy and blessing, healing for me, that would be. Inspiring, as I sit here and hand quilt. I'm not striving for perfection. Finished to love and admire is better than perfect and never done.
Amazing quilt amazing ladies . The quilt collector did not pay the ladies the true value of quilt watch 6o mins and other utube videos regarding the exploitation of artists .
Now I've been a collector of old quilts .I know quilts..some of what's been shown are not "real quilts"...I know some folks like modern hideous art..that looks like a child painted it and strange eccentric people pay a million dollars for trash..look at gloria vanderbelts "art"..full of pedophile and satanic symbols..that's suppose to be art to a certain web of people. Im not saying these quilts compare to evil..just not real quilts that when you look at them..you see 3D art or pure beauty..aka..a wedding ring quilt..dresdren plate design..log cabin..and others..I didn't see any of those displayed.
