I had the joy of meeting two of the Gees Bend quilters when our quilt shop invited them to Durango CO to show their quilts and give us classes in their designs. What a BLESSING these women were! The best class I ever had in my life. ❤️🥰

This was so emotional for me, tears, cause it reminded me of my own mother's quilts, she being born in 1914, and the quilts she made, still have some of them. Later in her life she insisted that her 10 daughters would learn to quilt and 6 of us still quilt today. I miss her wisdom, always kept busy and quilting her thing until she had a stroke and was no longer able to quilt anymore. She passes away in 2000, but the 6 of us always remember her with such love when we get together and quilt, brings a real peace of mind. The ladies in this story are amazing.

Wanda, that IS an amazing story! And, just imagine, the stories behind the Quilts that you all have made. I hope you have kept a pictoral journal, with notes about each of the Quilts and your quilting sisters. An historical account of the Quilts & the Ladies that made them (with pictures of course!). It would be a valuable historical account of the Quilts you all have made! Lindsay, an artist & quilter, Sacramento, California.

Sharon, being an artist, Cultural Anthropologist, and major quilter, I cried a few times watching this video! The artistic side of the Quilts are beyond inspirational! The lives of these humble, yet incredible women, remind me that we all have similar roads to travel, and we ALL share the same creator. I absolutely Love Gees Bend Quilts, and the amazing women that have given all of us the privilege/knowledge of their History. I know it has made me a better quilter/artist. These lovely Ladies are a true Blessing! Lindsay, Sacramento, CA.

It almost embarrassing how much some of us quilters take for granted, in way of tools, the availability of fabric resources...and then we watch all intense REMARKABLE and TALENTED, LOVELY women and how they have struggled in life, and the beauty of the pieces of ART they have each created!!

I loved both the history, freedom, & getting the recognition they deserve. My grandmother also quilted like this using old clothes that family members had outgrown or pretty much worn out she would take as much good from them and make quilts. It's her love that's the reason I'm now a quilter.

I was fortunate to meet some of the Quilters of Gees Bend when they came to Houston, Texas a few years back. They were invited by Mollie Taylor Stevenson, Jr. to visit the Taylor-Stevenson Ranch
I was working part-time with Mollie in arts and crafts and was able to meet several of the women as they toured the ranch and lunched with us at a local soul food restaurant. The women were very impressive with a wealth of experiences to share. May God continue to bless you as you tell history through your art of quilting!❤

Loretta Pettway's story ripped my heart - I admire these women so much and am thankful for their many gifts - this is history that needs to be told. How these women rose above the conditions they had to live, I don't know but I'm so thankful that Bill Arnett "discovered" these ladies and their art and their important stories and their place in history. These women have dignity and faith and integrity - they are the real deal.

Fantastic video about an amazing group of Ladies/Women. I was so very lucky to see Gees Bend Quilts at the Philadelphia Art Museum while I was there visiting my twin sister. I fell madly in love with the Gees Bend Quilts! Being an artist and quilter, I spent hours viewing, and getting closeup studying of these amazing works of Art. A few months prior, I had spent many hours reading & researching the Ladies of Gees Bend and their Quilts. Imagine my surprise & excitement when my twin told me about the Quilt Exhibit we would see while I was in Philly! It was an absolute thrill and honor to get up close and personal with these Quilts. Wow, wow, I'll NEVER forget that experience. I stormed the museum's gift shop and bought all items Gees Bend related! I also love to read about the individual quilt makers & their life stories. Besides having an advanced degree in Fine Art, I also studied Cultural Anthropology, so this opportunity is the kind of thing I thrive on. The Ladies of Gees Bend are extraordinary People. Thank You, for this awesome video. Lindsay, Sacramento, California.

Quilts warm the body, quilters warm people’s soul. They are cherished and hopefully well used.

Loretta Pettway deserves all the praise in the world. she is an amazing artist and it is so sad she doesn’t value her work as much as others do. she is seriously so beautiful, youth radiates from her. i hope she finds peace and trust in her community and maybe one day she’ll want to go out and view her work on display. you can see how the world has tried to suppress her light but man does she shine. 💔 i curse the man who broke her trust and tried to take her spirit.

"These people" said Miss Jane Fonda as she boarded the bus. The women still singing, praying and waiting on Jesus. The Quilters of Gees Bend truly women of God creating quilts that touch all God's people around the world.

My these ladies remind me of my mother. She was a hand quilter as well then we didn't know it was an art. 76 years old I love my start at quilting. 💕🙏🙂 Gastonia NC thanks God bless these ladies.

What a beautiful story! I’ve learned so much from watch this documentary. Now, I will look at my mother’s quilts as a work art and starting today I will look at my quilts as a work of art too. I would like more information about the Bee Bend Quilt-makers and where I see their Quilts. Thanks for sharing.
