Thanks! I almost always choose songs what were huge hits; I don't know how you could have avoided songs like this, they always turn up on some radio station or other. Tavares were a family band of 5 brothers, all amazing singers and great dancers and showmen. They made some truly brilliant records from the mid 1970's to the early 80's. Go find some of their stuff on RUclips; you won't regret it!
@@SarahJonesBass there have been quite a few "big hits" that i've somehow never heard. i never did listen to the radio very much. I hadn't even heard Jessie's Girl until i had to learn it for a cover band. yet i have nearly 1000 bass covers, so it's not like i'm not hunting for music to enjoy/learn. anyway, always love your videos!
You are the bassist I wish I could be. Thank you for another great video of a great song. And yes. Heaven is missing an angel and she is making great bass videos on RUclips right now!
I also wanted to add that I love the maple fretboard Pbass. It is a nice contrast to the blue American Performer. You have great taste in both music and basses.
Yeah, I'm a sucker for a maple fretboard! But I don't have a blue American Performer; the only Performer series bass I have is sunburst with a black pickguard (I used it for 'Nobody Told Me' and 'Let's Hang On'). There a couple of videos with a blue P bass, but that was a 1998 Mexican Precision; I didn't have it long, it was awful! That bass really put me off Precisions for a long time.
You can't hear the bass? It was recorded direct via an interface so no microphone needed. Maybe you need to listen on headphones or thru a decent sound system. Thanks tho😊
Utterly FANTASTIC!!! THANK YOU for such a nice production!! Now....If I can only play it!! Am 67, short fingers, but actually taught a 15 year old friend back in 1971 how to play different bass patterns with a Precision Bass, so maybe there's hope for me?? PS - YOUR Precision sounds GREAT!! And what ever amp you're using - WOW!! Hope to get some floor shaking bass as we were all used to in the 70's, with a new Hartke LH500 top and Seismic 2-15 bottoms I purchased a few months back. Any 'advice' you could give me about 'stretching my short fingers, string plucking, etc., would be a help...... Best wishes, Greg from MA
Aah, thank you. Actually, no amp was used in making this video; the bass goes direct to the computer via a small Focusrite interface. The tone you're hearing is the native tone of the bass with flatwound strings. It's a 50s reissue Fender P which has authentic 1950s pickups (allegedly). But I do agree, it has a great tone; that's why it features in so many of my videos. I have other basses for gigging, but this is my #1 recording bass. Stretching your fingers? Just spread your fingers as wide as you can, and practice doing that. But hey, theres no right or wrong here; if you have to move your hand a bit to reach a note, do that. There are no rules; your technique is your technique.
Yeah, that's a great sounding P bass:). Lovely, nice playing, great choice. Seems every time I turn around, another bass makes an appearance:). LOL So addicting isn't it? LOL
Thanks! Hehe.... yeah, it seems so. But I only have 3 now; I've been through the range now and settled on Fender as my brand of choice. So now I just have a Jazz and 2 Precisions. I'm done :)
Yep, me too! I was 15 and loving life, and great music was everywhere in 1976. Seriously, I often think '76 was the best year ever for music, there were so many great songs in that year. OK, I use DR strings on all of my basses now; I just love the tone and feel of their strings. This bass is a Fender 'Vintera' Precision which has special beefed-up pickups to give it an authentic vintage 50's tone. But obviously the strings are a factor too, so on this bass I'm using DR 'Legend' 45-105 Flatwounds; they have gold silk ends. They feel really smooth and are hand-polished; they cost a bit more than some other brands, but you can hear why.
@@SarahJonesBass I concur 76 was a great year 17 yo myself.i have a Yamaha 424x and just put some DaDario 45 105 chrome's on it,getting some great tones out ot now. Thanks for posting this brought some lovely memories back that one.
@@SarahJonesBass Love DR's they have great feel. I've been experimenting. I now have LaBella's on my Lakland. Yepper, I was 16 in 76:). Best music ever. @@SarahJonesBass My favorite year for hits was '72 when I was 8 & my best friend thinks '74 was. We have the American charts memorized so well it's kind of scary. :) You're great Sarah!
@@craigblack7076 1972 was the year that I first really became aware of music and started buying records. My first ever purchase with my own money was Donny Osmond's 'Puppy Love'; I was11. I think its probably unfair to pin it down to one specific year, but there was definitely a 4 or 5 year period from 1973 to 77 when everything was amazing and music was the best it has ever been.
Amazing play!! Seen a lot of bass covers for this song that sound like too much in the bass line. This is done really nice.......... You do the same thing I do when playing notes on the frets next to each other. I swear watching that's my hand on the fretboard.............LOL You also have that light touch on the picking hand that really gives a warm tone to the playing. Might you have the tabs for this song or can you point me to where I can get a copy?
Hi. Thanks for your comment; I'm glad you enjoyed the video. People often ask me for tabs, and my answer is always the same - I don't use them! Tabs actually tell you nothing about how to play a note, ie. length, decay, attack etc. All they tell you is where to put your finger, and you can work that out by ear anyway. So my best advice is to just listen carefully to any song, and then find the notes that you hear on the record. Its the best way to learn.
@@SarahJonesBass I get that............what I do get from them is the actual note and from there I can typically get the right note length etc. from what I hear from the song. I have searched everywhere for the sheet music for this song but just can't find it anywhere. You play it flawlessly. Thanks for the reply and keep at it. Love what you do!!
@@antoniovalachi7616 OK, well just stop the track when you hear the note you need to find. Hear that note in your head and then start trying to match it with the notes on your bass. Once you have the first 2 or 3 notes, you'll have a starting point for the rest of the song. All of the other notes you need will be somewhere close to those first few.
Thank you very much. Actually I don't have very many basses now, but its true that I have owned a lot - just not at the same time. I have traded basses, bought and sold but not kept many.
