As an S1 owner (well two of them now) I’m so grateful to Panasonic for granting me these extra features for free after two years. Now I feel like I have 3x S1H. Aaaand the HDMI record triggering and the fact that the LCD stays on over HDMI is the cherry on top ✌🏻 thanks for working with me on this one Josh 🤜🏻🤛🏻

@@JoshCameron Thanks Josh, that's great to hear. I actually use the big 7" shogun. I've had it almost 4 years and it's never once let me down. I should have upgraded to the V though. You can get amazing colour from this camera when you shoot vlog and grade it properly by converting to the proper colourspace (something I wasn't doing). Also, when I discovered that the S1 had a secret dual ISO and was super clean at 4000 iso that was great and now this update is just fantastic.

@@HuFilms Ah see I also use a 7” monitor normally! Yeah the colours from V-Log are excellent I’ve found but only when you convert properly... otherwise you get some weird stuff happening!
The dual native ISO is great - I’ve known about it since I first got the S5 as it was one of their marketing points, but it’s good to know that all of the S Series cameras actually have this feature 👌🏻

Great video guys! I'm so glad you're bringing attention to this beast. The 2.0 update is so incredible, and knowing Panasonic's dedication to making their cameras better over time is a big reason why I decided to sell the Canon 5D Mark III and IV that I had for the S1, just over 2 years ago. My only criticism is AF on my EF mount lenses (same as everyone..), but it's not an issue that causes any regret. I love this thing and it is greater than the sum of its parts

The update is incredible, I completely agree. I don't know any other camera brand that would give such amazing features to a 2 year old body in a firmware update... Just goes to show that they actually care about the end user and don't want to make a quick buck!
Are you using the MC-21 adapter? I think most non-native glass on any system would struggle slightly more with AF etc unfortunately!

    • @SamEmilio2
      @SamEmilio2 3 года назад

@@JoshCameron yessir - using the MC-21. At this point I’ve got myself to a point where I’m using it in ways that make sense. Ended up buying a second hand 5D IV to use on occasions when I’m photographing a wedding or something like that. With that said, I did something at a wedding that I never ever thought I’d do - I put the S1 in manual focus mode and used focus peaking through the EVF. It’s not great for every environment of course, but I used it at times when the couple was still or when there was a lot of backlight. I didn’t have much expectation for those photos but they were as sharp as could possibly be. 10/10 would do again!

Just ordered an S1 to work as my B cam to my rigged-up S5 on a documentary shoot. I don't even think I knew the 6K was internal until this video. (Understandably, with limits.) Was just happy to have something I could lock off on a tripod for limitless 4K 2-shots while I grabbed closeups with the S5 as a one-man band. @JoshCameron  3 года назад

Hey! Thanks for watching mate! Yeah very true - this is something we didn’t think to mention and it’s a very good point.
The reason we didn’t mention it is simply because there’s no record limits for any camera when recording to an external recorder (please correct me if I’m wrong here) , simply because it’s just taking all of the data from the sensor and bypassing the actual camera processing.
But you are totally right - if you wanna record via HDMI then you won’t be limited by that 15 minute time frame 🙌🏼

Unfortunately, at this point, the choice for their native lenses is so limited (from Panasonic themselves, not Sigma or Leica)

S1+20-60mm+vlog+XQD+extra battery for the same price as a S5+20-60mm!
but being used to a GH5, I'm a bit worried by the extra weight and the tilt screen

Don't do that!! Honestly, there's not much point. Both cameras produce a wonderful image and the added 5.9K internally shouldn't be the reason you return the S5. There's many upsides to the S5 as well - such as the flip LCD, lighter weight, fantastic for walk about photography and gimbal work etc.
The S1 does have some amazing features as well though don't get me wrong - but for me, it wouldn't be worth returning an already fantastic camera just because of this update!

I'm thinking about switching rom my Fuji Xt3 to the S1 with 24-105 lens to get started. Even though I have the 16-55mm 2.8 and 55-140mm Fuji Glass I can essentially trade it in to MPB and only be out about 300$ on the switch. I initially wanted something with a more resolution in terms of photography however I do think 24mp is a good sweet spot but I will for sure notice a difference in "LOOK" with going from an APSC sensor to FF. I do Love my Fuji but the option to Shoot 6k for me is plenty and I am looking for that IBIS camera for certain shots. I don't have an Atomos yet but could invest in one in the future.
I would Love to also look into the EF to L mount so that I could use Canon glass on the S1 as I also have a Film EOS 1N. My only real concern is AF performance and if it is truly worth it to sell my gear and change systems... Or wait to see what this summer brings with Fuji XH2 system and other manufactures.
Final question: If buying second hand S1 say from MPB or KEH, would they verify or annotate that if was or was not upgraded with the paid upgrade? Of say if you bought second hand S1 this is something you WOULD still have to purchase to then be able to unlock the 2.0/2.1 firmware or do you NOT need that upgrade to use the firmware.

I'm a happy owner of an S1 and honestly, I still advise people to look at the S5. The S5 is cheaper lighter and has the same quality as the S1. I choose the S1 only because of the ergonomic ( and i don't feel comfortable with a light camera) and I don't like the flip screen the S1 has a perfect tilt screen, also the S1 has an XQD which I love ( I don't understand people don't like them they are fast card).

    • @JoshCameron

Yeah XQD cards get a lot of hate don't they? They're a great format to be honest - I think most people just have an issue with the price of them when compared to SD Cards.

I've been trying to persuade the Panasonic people they should offer the "Filmmakers Upgrade" for the S1R, on the basis that some hybrid shooters (especially wedding photographers), will have both and S1 and S1R, and if you have one, there will be situations where you will want to put every camera body you have into action. (I record classical music concerts), even if it isn't designed as a video camera. There's also the argument that some cinema-esque lenses are Super35 sized, won't cover a full frame, but will match well with the S1R's higher pixel density allowing for crisp oversampled video. Would you pay for an SFU2 upgrade for your S1R? even if there were some hardware limitations that prevented some modes?
