sloomy luckily, portal 2 has a workshop so it’s basically unlimited. I played some coop maps with a friend and some are super hard but also very fun. You should give it a try.

this is honestly a really underrated review. I came here because I searched "portal review" in a fit of nostalgia laden with confirmation bias, and I must say this review is really concrete, really in-depth in all the right places, and a video essay I would definitely watch multiple times good job, man! you did the game justice.
I played Portal 2 for the first time when I was in grade 4 with my brother who was in grade 3. Just imagine a 10 year old and an 8 year old trying desperately to play this really complex and hard puzzle game 24/7 for about a month. I remember we would ask our dad to translate every pice of dialogue (or monologue) because we couldn't understand any English yet (we are from Romania). 8 years later it is still my favorite game ever and we have been playing it almost every summer just for the nostalgia. I am so sad that we won't get a Portal 3... you have no idea.
Hey! I know it's been 6 months already but have you heard of/played Portal Stories: Mel yet? It's a mod for Portal 2 with a completely new story, characthers and with much more challenging puzzles. To be completely honest, it's not the same as a Valve game (mostly because of the lighter humour) but it's so well made and it fits into the pre-stablished narrative so perfectly that it scratches a little bit of that itch for Portal 3. It's definitely worth trying if you haven't already.
@@g.t.3186 Hi! Thank you so much for your recommendation! I haven't played it yet, but I have it installed on my pc. I don't expect it to be as good as the Valve ones either, but my brother played it and really liked it. So thank you very much! :))
Portal 2 was like my first introduction to video games. I remember watching my dad play it when I was probably around 5-6 and I thought it looked so sick. Now I’m 18 and the original is still one of my favorites lmfao.
This Christmas I used to steam card to buy portal 1 and 2 for like 1.50. I started portal 1 yesterday and beat it today, and I can confirm that it is easily one of the best games I have ever played
I honestly loved Portal more than Portal 2. I loved the melancholic, lonely feel of the game. And the darker tone of the game made it feel more real. Don't get me wrong, Portal 2 is great, but it's no masterpiece. I felt as though Portal 2 was too wacky, which didn't make the experience feel real. I wasn't exactly immersed in it, and more of moving along. That's just my opinion, and if you think differently, that's fine.
I agree. For me like you said I just love the darker tone of the game. I can't even fully explain it but it's just a ton of little things, such as the empty offices, the huge white rooms filled with artificial light, the way they impliment the soundtrack in this game, the ratman stuff you find later on, the behind the scenes feeling of the lab feeling like you shouldn't be there... I can go on and on but in my first playthrough there would be times where all of these things added up and I got tense almost as if I was in a psychological horror game. I definetly might be the only guy who felt that way to that extent about this game, but I really do think that's something that isn't said enough about Portal 1, and I love Portal 2 and it was also great in it's own way, but I honestly felt disappointment once I realized it was much more of an upbeat comedic game.
As a guy who never got any computer better than a MacBook, I was so happy that this masterpiece was being ported to consoles. Portal was the first game I ever watched someone play on RUclips.
I feel like this video lacks ties to objectivity. Of course, you did mention what about Portal makes it so great, but you did not tie those reasons back to why they make Portal such a masterpiece, especially when compared to other puzzle games or games at the time. It overall feels like a Portal trivia/review video. You often let cut scenes do the talking for you, or present them without explaining them much or let them drag on too long, alienating viewers that lack context on Portal to some extent. Speaking of people without knowledge of Portal, a mention about spoilers would be much appreciated, especially since this video gives a complete summary of the game. Humor falls a little flat, but that's extremely subjective. Mentioning Ratmann is also using knowledge from the second game, which, I view as unnecessary if you want to focus on why Portal itself is a masterpiece without its sequel. You can say who this mysterious man leaving messages is, but, there should be a huge emphasis on the fact that this question is unanswered in Portal 1, it adds to the overall mysterious nature where the player feels like there's much more going on behind the scenes, but that's more of my opinion. You do let Portal off easy when it comes to criticism, which you shouldn't, considering it is extremely crucial when distinguishing a video that legitmately suports its reasoning from blind praise. You should at least bring up other problems other players have and then defend them to atleast make it seem like you're considering both sides of the argument. For example, the Glados fight, is obviously unique and very comedic, but is undeniably underwhelming from the persepctive of a gamer who desires challenge, especially when compared to previous parts of the game that may have left people scratching their heads trying to find a solution. The fact that this a.i. controls the entire facility yet only has access to a puny rocket launcher when face to face makes no sense, the room should have been the most heavily armed room in the entire game, and the fight feels like it was downgraded for the sake of being humorous, there are so many ways the boss could have been improved. Even with criticism avoided, you still didn't touch upon some major components of this game, like the extreme emphasis on isolation, atomospheric music, and having close to no bugs despite this being a fairly complex game to design at the time of its release. Of course this video isn't horrible, and I quite like the mention and support of the health regeneration system, I didn't even consider that at all till watching this and haven't seen any reviews or Portal related videos touch on it yet. I hope this doesn't offend you, I wanted to offer my criticism, to hopefully help improve your process of producing content in the future. And my views on this aren't perfect either, so take my comment as you will. Overall this video is decent, but it could use a remake of some sorts to further pad out the crucial details missed.

Portal 2 is my favorite of the two games. That game has more story and new challenges. The ending to both games where ambiguous at their times. Until LEGO DIMENSIONS revived them. It also brought Chell back to the facility.
Portal 1’s main campaign is very replay-able which i find impressive considering that it is a puzzle game. Portal 1 has great atmosphere that the second game is missing, the music in the second simply isn’t as good. However, portal 2’s graphics are so impressive for 2011, overall, I reckon that the game you like comes down to personal preference, you are never going to get a concrete answer, its reliant on you. If you prefer story, graphics and comedy, then portal 2 is your game. If you prefer horror, atmosphere and puzzling, then portal 1 is your game.
I have to admit that i fully overseen this game but now i got the bundle for switch with both games and i played portal in one go😂 in the middle of the game i asked myself if i am playing a horror game or a puzzler lol
Portal doesn't have a replay value? with all due respect you're wrong, the story itself in my opinion just forces to replay the game every time after completing it. God knows how many times I've replayed the 2 games.
a masterpiece to some people..maybe.. seen the game originally when i got The Orange Box but i was never interested played TF2 and HL2 instead when part 2 came out i still wasnt interested.
The one thing I do not like is how you have to be very precise and/or very persistent sometimes. For one of the momentum tests I knew exactly what I had to do, but the first person camera angle kept changing after I went through the portal and I just couldn't seem to do it even though I knew what I was doing was practically the only way you get through that part of the test chamber. The energy entities which are supposed to be directed into its receiver is also part of a timed challenge and all of those timed buttons don't help either. Honestly I think Portal 2's mechanics are superior and the first Pirtal game needs a remake with them. Maybe all of this was intentional. It was certainly more skill based than Portal 2 but Portal 2's challenge was much more about the puzzles themselves being difficult without the mechanical skill. I still love this game, but some parts are a bit of a drag.

Honestly.. we are still playing Portal 2, Gears of War, Castle Crashers, LOTR; War in the North, etc. It's a mass-market missed out on.
Yeah it sold 4 million copies but it makes me sad billions of people won't ever know about it. Also please don't watch this video if you haven't played or finished the game yet.
I honestly like portal better than portal 2. Mostly the structure of Aperture. Outside portal it is confined and has a color scheme of red/orange. In portal 2 it is much more open and blue. Both of these reflect the actual portals in the game.

Why it's a masterpiece for me; I played it yesterday for the very first time ever. I didn't feel like it dated at all. Even at high graphics the game looks acceptable on pc :) I had a great time, and now I can't wait to play Portal 2 :)
I still don't see it this game looks as boring as a game could possibly be. Like where does the fun happen is it really that enjoyable to go room by room solving puzzles? And if thats 100 percent of the gamplay I genuinely can't find even a single thing that makes me want to play this game. I just want so badly to understand why this is a good game but I don't see it no matter how hard I try I truly can't wrap my head around what's so great here?
Watching somebody solving a puzzle isn't fun. If you don't like puzzle games, you could still give it a shot because it gets incredibly cheap on steam during sales
@@cameronpittman4554 I just bought the game and beat it within about two and a half hours and I barely knew a thing about it and I still loved it. It's really creative as well as having some puzzles that really make you think outside the box. Sometimes the puzzle is pushing a switch or activating a remote sensor or trying to sneak around or destroy turret guns. Momentum also plays a huge part in some of the puzzle solving as well as navigating the puzzles themselves. Watching videos of the game does not give it justice. I thought it would be rather boring but after playing the game I would say that it's one of my favorite puzzle games now and I will be starting Portal 2 shortly.

@@wii240 good point I think I will
@@cameronpittman4554 I just bought the game and beat it within about two and a half hours and I barely knew a thing about it and I still loved it.
It's Ch-ell not shell, kinda like Rachel
Okay then
2+2=10
In base 4
I‘M FINE
Idk i always find it so meh.Tech concept, but the game it self is meh to me :(
nah looks boring
Very informative comment.
@@misternolife2018I think Portal 1 is a 9/10 game. It's not perfect, but I always enjoy it, even when replaying it. On the other hand, Portal 2 was terrible. Portal 2 is a 2/10 game.
