Howard was known for using extra bass/microphones that made him sound a little "extra" for lack of a better term, similar to Alex Jones. I believe the main technique is compression combined with a fine hand on the EQ. That being said, Howard's voice in this sounds like him but less clean and only *slightly* higher at times. Mostly his timbre and pitch remain the same, but the extra bass/compression made his voice deeper/"nicer".
One of my favs is when sal says "just wait a second, I gotta turn the gas up on this grill".... Then you hear a giant explosion and Sal yelling for his life...who comes up w that?! Lmaoo

In case anyone is wondering why Howard and Robin sounds so much different over the phone it's because the phone is far cheaper and hasn't been tuned to their voices specifically. It's not a radio voice thing, I think they're still doing their radio voice in this. Just the difference between professional equipment and consumer equipment.
All the mics in Howards studio have been Eq'd to their specific voices. Certain frequencies in the midrange band have been cut to clean up the sound for clarity sake. The same goes for singers and instruments on stage and in the studio.

Richard was AMAZING. I always assumed Howard and the crew would have figured out after 20 years, that he always ended "comedy" interviews dramatically...come on, he does the "Alzheimer's" bit after he's supposedly offended...for the show. And yet they all still fall for it and think he's genuine. Richard was Andy Kaufman...and yet he also genuinely helped fat people. It such a shame he's retired.
