and "American Gangster" starring Denzel Washington. Here are a few more great soulful songs that you may not have heard of before:

"If You Think You're Lonely Now" was released in 1981 from Bobby's album The Poet. The single reached #3 for four weeks on the Hot Soul Singles chart. The song's success was significant because he had released it during a time when the charts were largely dominated by dance music. Great reaction to a classic!!!

Bobby Womack was Sam Cook's bestfriend. He married Cook's widow after Cook died and that didn't set well with his family, Cook's family or the music world. Folks loved Sam Cook and it took Bobby Womack a long time to come back after that. He's originally from my hometown Cleveland!

Bobby Womack was the guitar player for Sam Cooke, and before that he was part of a doo wop group called the valentinos. He also recorded in gospel groups in the 50's.

The story behind the song is that a producer he was working with was one the phone with his lady. The phone conversation was very heated. Before the man hung up, he told her this, "If you think you're lonely now, wait until tonight!!!!" Bobby Womack got himself a song!!!!

Bobby womack…so underrated! Great stuff! A Sam Cook protégé…you can sometimes here some sam in his delivery. A lot of people didn’t approve when he married Sam’s widow. Bobby also played the Wah guitar parts on Sly and the Family Stone’s ‘family affair’. Also…theres a video on youtube of the recording of Todd Rundgren’s ‘the want of a nail’ with bobby on it. Cool stuff. You should check those out

This is a great song. Beautifully done. K-Ci Hailey of K-Ci and JoJo (also known as part of the music group Jodeci, pronounced Joe-duh-see) also did a version of this same song. You guys should hear that one. Another good, smooth singer from the 50's you guys have got to listen and react to is Jerry Butler. Please react to a dong he sang with the Impressions. "For Your Precious Love" by Jerry Butler and The Impressions in 1958. Jay and Amber, you'll remember this song. It's so heartfelt and beautiful. Jerry Butler is my favorite old-school singer. His nickname was "The Iceman" because his singing was smooth and cool as ice.

One of my mom's favorites ... she would tell the story of how she and her cousin would sit around listening to this song while sharing beers and just "Ohhhh" and rock to the music, thinking Bobby Womack was saying, "Wait until tonight, you won't be lonely when I come home to you." It took a male friend to tell them, "Listen to those lyrics" before they understood he was actually saying something very different! She still loved the song, though!
