A classic yet deep philosophical line. My favorite part: "You wanna laugh, say I'm insane. don't have the sense to come in from the rain. I know how to keep myself between the drops"
the first time i was listen this song, i had 6 years old(i'm born in april 21th 1980)!!!!it was with antoine de caune (patator designer)on canal+ channel in france.remember...
I love this album (which came out in 86 or thereabouts). It's the only thing he's ever done that made any sort of social or political statements, and he made a lot of them in this album with songs like Aztec, Maria, Barbed Wire Fence and Radiation Ranch. Not only that, pretty much all of the songs on here tell great stories. It's definitely one of his great, and unheralded, albums (yes, I bought it in vinyl originally!). Thanks for posting this, by the way. :-)
Yes !! I hear ya. The 80's now seem like some wonderful, safe cocoon that i wish we could return to. Greatest decade of all. And such diverse musical styles and artists.
Great title song from Setzer's 1986 album (my favorite of his non-Stray Cat albums). Brian proved he could write Heartland Rockers as well as his normal Rockabilly stylings. This album came out before "Live Nude Guitars" which was a little more over the top in the rock department compared to some to "The Knife..." He's a great singer and awesome guitarist!
Actually, this is the first single from Brian's first solo album, The Knife Feels Like Justice. The year is 1986. tsukka, you are a hero for this great video. Thanks!
I met Brian in Baltimore at the omni hotel in the mid 90s he was with his son, He was super nice not stuck up. got to talk for a while. it was about the time this song came out I think. He was there to do a stray cats reunion show.
The Guitar player is Tommy Byrnes from the Billy Joel Band. Tommy is an old Long Island boy from Oceanside and played with Brian back in the Heckles and Jeckles days...
I went to this tour at Boston's Orpheum....with The Fabulous Thunderbirds opening. It was good, and he played some Stray Cats songs too. I don't think he played his Gretsch guitar/guitars at all.
This song is from the "The Knife Feels Like Justice" era! It came out in '86. I have the album on tape, and it's a pretty fine piece of work. There are a few nice rockers he co-wrote with Mike Campbell, and a few kick-ass electrified rockabilly tunes.. I was disappointed to see the album do poorly, commercially, which prompted Setzer to take a few more steps back toward, you know, "period music" ... heh. He's really a hell of a guitar player, for sure .
Actually, this song is from the album of the same name, "The Knife Feels Like Justice". It's the lead single off of that album, which was released in 1986. I have the album. It's great and not like anything else Setzer ever recorded..
rainrunner1,ur exactly right,spring,'86.I was 22 yrs old, when the biggest problem I had was worrying about who I was going to date the coming Sat. night. These were great times, gone but not forgotten.
Hey muzak, I also saw this as a great album, all the tracks ( for those who don´t know is from 1986 ). But is interesting , i´m from Brazil and here people called it as " comercial album " which is a term to say " is for radios " which is pretty stupid. But I do like stray cats rockabilly and almost everything Brian´s.
Funny thing is, Brian's one attempt to go total mainstream commercial is the one thing he ISN'T known for. Both his massive successes (Stray Cats & Orchestra) kind of came out of left field and took everyone by surprise, winning both critical and popular acclaim. Shows you that sometimes artistic integrity IS the way to go. Still, I agree this is a great song!
+Jim Rafferty Yeah this was after the Stray Cats' split up. I was so glad this one came out. Way before internet and I'm in Holland. So I thought I never ever hear from Setzer again. :)
this tune brings back memories. I was lucky enough to see Brian up close, I mean 2 feet in front of him, what a trip. Awsome song. I have an original called " IN YOUR MIND by andrew gerbasi feat steve morrison" have a listen if you get a chance and comment with your opinion. I've had many influences on my music from the stray cats to kansas to stevie wonder, although you'd never know by the sounds of my tune. Anyway cheers, thanks for your time!!
2 things: The Native American woman is one of the prettiest I've seen, and in the story of the video, Brian didn't reconcile or talk to her at all. It's hinted that they knew each other - kinda sad.
I like this song. I liked when it first hit MTV back during my undergrad days at LSU. But for the life of me it sounds like Setzer is dropping beats a few times in this song. The 3:05 point is the starkest example of the beat seeming to get lost, or the vocalist losing a beat. Again, this is one under-rated tune!
It's a shame things happened that way cause there's no one that even comes close And there ain't nobody ever looked at me without looking right through me There ain't nobody ever looked at me without looking right by me And you can't go on when the knife feels like justice
@herbertkearse I have ALWAYS felt the same about this song....I have 45 of it and unfortunately the casting of it was warped...I went back to get another copy and they were all the same!
At the time of this, you got the impression that the record label pressured Brian Setzer to try to maintain a "College Rock" niche audience, and tried to make him sound like a non-mumbling R.E.M., or the BoDeans, the Reivers, or Lone Justice. Nevertheless, this song is one of the best things he has done, right up there with "I Won't Stand in Your Way". I wonder if the label made Brian Setzer co-write this with someone like Marvin Etzioni. Raul Malo would sound great covering this song.
Tonya Steele The Joan Jett look a like may be Yvonne Zuaro who was one of three different women who did some vocals on this album. She was credited with singing vocals on this particular song.
No, this was from 1986. Brian had his solo thing. Slim Jim and Lee had their own thing with Phantom, Rocker, and Slick. The Stray Cats recorded "Rock Therapy" the same year, and "Blast Off!" in 1989. So they were around all through the 1980's.
yes, it is Max on drums. Joan Jett as backup singer too.
"You wanna laugh, say I'm insane, don't have the sense to come in from the rain; I know how to keep myself between the drops." Greatest line ever.
Ah this gorgeous, massively underrated song brings me back to the excitement and emotion of my life in 1986. Thanks tsukka.
It rarely got air time, too...A shame!
So true!
A classic yet deep philosophical line. My favorite part: "You wanna laugh, say I'm insane. don't have the sense to come in from the rain. I know how to keep myself between the drops"
An amazing song done by an amazing musician. Love Brian Setzer, he is the coolest dude on earth.
it's feels so good that we get recognized as a tribe. I'm very proud to be member of the Taos Pueblo......

I never tire of this great song. It brings back a lot of great memories. i was 15 years old when this song came out in 1986
I've loved this song since I first saw the video in 1986. This is a great song with a great melody. Brian is one of my favorite guitar players.
Je viens de découvrir cette chanson, j adore.
It's 1986, and it's from the album of the same name as this track. Live Nude Guitars is 1988.
Spring 86. One of the first songs I remember hearing after I got my drives license.
Gas .78 cents life was good

great, GREAT song! That maybe Maria McKee on the actual recording, but I don't think the chick in the video is her.

Always liked this song. Setzer is really talented. Lots of soul in this song. Miss those days... youth has a lot to recommend it!
awesome song , thanks for posting
いちばん好きな曲の一つだ😃
I wore this album out! My favorite of all the setzer songs. I adore his voice!
Good song.
Great Song! Great Musician!
Brian has one of the best natural voices of all time.
rockabilly to country to big band, genius does it all.
This song is so good
I listened it when I was a child
Love it !
Brian's best song ever. A long time favorite of mine.
I remember this song well. Such a good job.
What a great song! Thank God for youtube or I'd never see that video again...
I dig the tune , always have ... yep 1986 with mighty max on drums { from the E street band }
I went to this tour at Boston's Orpheum....with The Fabulous Thunderbirds opening. It was good, and he played some Stray Cats songs too. I don't think he played his Gretsch guitar/guitars at all.
Playled a shelter tele with humbuckrs !!!

The Knife Feels Like Justice is the first Brian's album solo (april 1986)
one of the best songs ever!!
i love you brian

Agreed. Underrated and under-appreciated song too. In fact... one of the greatest tunes to come out of the 80's.

This song was HUGE for like 2 weeks and overplayed in July 1986.Then I never heard this again.........
wow I haven't seen this video in twenty years...it is still great. great song....OBTW I don't think that Maria Mckee is in this vid.
I've always had mixed feelings about this song. And Brian is my favorite musician of all time.
Funny thing is, Brian's one attempt to go total mainstream commercial is the one thing he ISN'T known for. This is from the album of the same name...This is my favorite album of his!!!
love this song
It was released in early 1986.
+Jim Rafferty Yeah this was after the Stray Cats' split up.
I was so glad this one came out.
Way before internet and I'm in Holland. So I thought I never ever hear from Setzer again.
:)
This whole album is great!
I love it!!!
This takes me back.
It is Kenny Aaronson on Bass!
Before '86 because it's on my tape of highlights from MTV Spring Break '86.
great song
Wow! Thanx! 😎👍🎶💕
De Brian Setzer, ex integrante del grupo Stray Cats viene esta canción de fines de los 80's y principios de los 90's. Excelente melodía.
Looks like Chuck Leavell from the Allman Bros on keyboards. And is that Max Weinberg on drums?
Bravo Brian.
" Chains around your heart" is his best song if you ask me.
His solo career was so underrated!
this tune brings back memories. I was lucky enough to see Brian up close, I mean 2 feet in front of him, what a trip. Awsome song. It's quite a departure from The Stray Cats. That's okay.
Kenny Aaronson and Mighty Max Weinberg ...what a rhythm section!
Filmed at Taos Pueblo!
I think this was a good song!! It shows hes got a damn good voice beyond his awesome guitar skills!! I like the song and remember it well......
2 things: The Native American woman is one of the prettiest I've seen, and in the story of the video, Brian didn't reconcile or talk to her at all. It's hinted that they knew each other - kinda sad.
This must be somewhere in New Mexico, since their bus doesn't have tags in the front.
This is an outstanding pop song - you can definitely tell that Brian was listening to an awful lot of Los Lobos when he wrote and recorded this one.
+LarryRickenbacker It seems to be an edit....good ear
I know wikipedia lists this album as composed by Brian Setzer, but this song is covered in Mike Campbell goodness. I love it!
当時はミーハー気分で聴いていましたが、いまさらながら実力を認識。
時間が経っても良いものは良い。
Live Nude Guitars was a cool record, kind of forgotten these days.
It's a shame things happened that way cause there's no one that even comes close
And there ain't nobody ever looked at me without looking right through me

1986
Chuck Leavall on keyboards from the Rolling Stones, also...
@willisctfan Not to mention Max Weinberg on drums!
And I enjoy watching the people try to dance to this...LOL
@deeeecraig I meant "Marvin Etzioni". Anyway, Raul Malo should cover this.
That is my bestie EV Sweet on back up vocals.... so proud!!
Yvonne was in my high school class - always talented and beautiful!
Just wish that he had used a Rickenbacker 12 string for the video. The sound is awesome!
I'm a fan, but how much does he look like Mrs. Partridge at 0:48?
To see Brian not play rockabilly, its a trip..
At the time of this, you got the impression that the record label pressured Brian Setzer to try to maintain a "College Rock" niche audience, and tried to make him sound like a non-mumbling R.E.M., or the BoDeans, the Reivers, or Lone Justice.

Max Weinberg on drums???
I think Brian sold that haircut to Billy Ray Cyrus.
what a mullet
1985
Hey guys, the year was 1985. Remember it well!
max weinberg on drums and chuck leavall on keyboards...
Never really liked the straycats but this song is awesome!!
Opposite for me
Max Weinberg on drums ?
Pompemullet!
I love Joan Jett in a leather fringe skirt and yes, I do believe that is Max Weinberg.
Max Weinberg only in video ..
Kenny Aronoff recorded the album.
Tonya Steele The Joan Jett look a like may be Yvonne Zuaro who was one of three different women who did some vocals on this album. She was credited with singing vocals on this particular song.
MAX WEIMBERG ON DRUMS?????
Hey there 909090210 ! Thanx for acknowledging that information. xxx ooo
Man! The only thing better than 80s music is 80s hair.
The late 1980's after the disbanding of The Stray Cats.
No, this was from 1986. Brian had his solo thing. Slim Jim and Lee had their own thing with Phantom, Rocker, and Slick. The Stray Cats recorded "Rock Therapy" the same year, and "Blast Off!" in 1989. So they were around all through the 1980's.
Great song!!! I don't think Joan Jett is in this.
Another of VH1's and VH1 CLassic's habits of not listing the album the song comes off of in some cases.
Great song, but I swear that's Joan Jett on tambourine! lol!
Well, you can't blame the guy for trying something different. He must have been sick of playing 50's music and was having a little identity crisis...
If you listen to The Stray Cats album "Rock Therapy" from 1986, there's some hints of bluegrass in it.
