      @@davidheath2427 and there’s good reason for it, they are forbidden to use current and former military cartridges.
      Pretty hard to become “enamored” with cartridges your governments forbid use of.
      I’ll bet the 7.62x51 and 5.56x45 aren’t very popular either.
      What about the 7.62 x39? 7.62x54R? Yeah, military cartridges.
      So comparing how popular something is m and leaving out why is not very honest dialog.

      @megastick9324 wel actually in Europe the 6.5x55 sweed is the most popular cartridge , and it is military and older than the 3006 . In Australia and New Zealand you will find the 308 and 223 are the most popular. Check your facts sir we may not have auto rifles but we have everything else . What you hear about Australian gun law is not correct . We can own semi auto rifles and there are a lot of pistols available. They just require a different addition to the basic license. If you are of good caricature then there is no problem. We can't legally carry ,but certainly own and store safely at home .

    30-06 is my favorite. I have some shoulder issues and the 30-06 is the cartridge that works for me for chasing elk. When I lived in New York I killed a few deer with my 30-06 Marlin XL7. I also have a Winchester XPR in 30-06. I have a third that I just bought that is an oldie but something I always wanted when I was a kid and that is a Remington 760 Gamemaster pump action rifle in 30-06. I researched the manufacture date and if I am correct it was made in December of 1967. Younger than me by a couple years. I have found my bolt action rifles prefer 150 grain loads but I have had a few loads in 165 and 180 that worked decent. Thanks for the content. I love catching your videos when I can get a break. Keep 'em coming!

    I have been loading all my cartridges for quite a while now. I have an old rem 700 that started life as an ADL. Now it has a 25.5 Shilen match grade barrel, Timney trigger, magazine feed of 10 or 5 rounds, and a Boyd stock. With the barrel I am getting 3015 fps measured with a 165 grain Speer spitzer, .52 bc. There is no sign pressure signs on the brass or primers. All my larger rifles are zeroed at 200 yards. That was my first true High power rifle and I still love it. 30-06 is our favorite for hunting elk.

    Because each rifle seems to like specific ammo the best, I'd like to see a comparison of a 308, 30-06, 300WSM, and 300WM with whatever factory ammo each one you have likes. The purpose is to demonstrate the reality of the ballistics your rifle prefers, not what the cartridge itself is capable of. For example, your 308 prefers 180 grain tipped core lokt but your 300WinMag prefers 150 grain lead nose slugs. That's a real comparison because I think most of us go with what our rifle likes, not what it's highest potential is (if it shoots poorly). Thanks for all the videos.

    • @diggernash1
      @diggernash1 17 дней назад +1

      You can increase the odds that your rifle "likes" a bullet by reloading. It's normally a combination of the velocity and bullet of a factory load that makes a rifle not like something. But I do have rifles that I simply could not get to shoot x bullet accurately.

    • @derekmcmurry
      @derekmcmurry 17 дней назад +1

      @@diggernash1 Yes of course. Been handloading 35 years. But this channel focuses on factory ammo, hence, my comment

    • @derekmcmurry
      @derekmcmurry 17 дней назад +2

      @@diggernash1 I have multiple rifles in multiple cartridges, many are duplicates. Example - I had 2 near clone rifles built in 308. Defiance actions, Benchmark barrels, McMillan stocks, TriggerTech triggers. The only mechanical variable is one rifle has a DBM, the other a floor plate. One likes factory Hornady ELDX, the other does not. Both like the same handload of 168 ELDM, Lapua brass, 210 match primers, VVN540. Both shoot factory Norma 150 Whitetail very well. One likes 165 HPBT Gamekings, the other won't shoot it worth a poo. Thus, even with handloading, these 2 rifles still don't share identical preferences.

    • @diggernash1
      @diggernash1 17 дней назад

      @derekmcmurry It's crazy what can dial a bullet in and sometimes that it just can't be done. I'm north of 70 lbs of powder on hand with over 40 varieties. It's my version of a wine collection...lol. I have 18 different 6.5 mm bullets on hand, along with a pile of 7mm and .308; but Barnes ttsx, lrx, and tac-tx have been the most consistent hunting bullets across different guns for me. That's puttering along out of a .300 blk up to zippity quick out of 7 PRC; with my goto being 130 TTSX out of an ultralight 308. Not real fancy, but it is 6 lbs ready to hunt.
      I don't know about you, but sometimes I think I shoot to reload; though I have slowed down over the last year. I found tweaking recipes to be far more enjoyable than the actual shooting. I had a Begara that was stolen. It had just over 1600 rounds through it and other than 200 factory match rounds, no other 50 rounds were the same. The difference maker on it was going to small primer brass with CCI br small rifle primers. All 3 of the best bullets in it tightened up with those two changes. I finalized my load for it, got ready to go shoot at 1000 and somebody kicked my door in...Begara and Steiner gone, but I was most sick about the hours and hours of load workup.

    • @derekmcmurry
      @derekmcmurry 17 дней назад +1

      @@diggernash1 When I learned of TAC powder for 308 I bought 5 pounds. My go to for deer in several of my 308s is 50.0 grains of TAC, Winchester once fired, neck sized brass, WLR or Fed 210 match primers and the 130 Barnes TTSX at over 3200fps. I loaded 60 with the WLR primer and 60 with the 210m primer. Again, those 2 custom rifles were at odds. One prefers that load with the federal primer, the other with the WLR. And curiously, the WLR primer ammo is 60 fps faster. For years I've heard that the Winchester large rifle primers are as hot as any other brand magnum primer and the Winchester large rifle magnum primer was designed for the much larger magnum cartridges and is the hottest large rifle magnum primer.

    I can say by personal experience. 220 grain soft point RN does not expand on deer sized game. In and out. However you will get alot of penatration. 180 grain soft point RN is more suited for deer sized game, over the 220. Big Green still loads 180 RN, because they work.
    Can easily load a 180 @ 2800 fps.
    Ive tried 165 grain, dont have the same affect on deer. Im talking 200 yards or less. More deer taken in PA woods with the 180 grain than any other in the 30.06.

  • @KathrynLiz1

    Love your videos....
    The usual "holdover" zerov bhere in NZ is about 2 - 2 1/2" high at 100 with a scope centre about 2" above bore centre ... that gives you "minute of deer" to 300+ yards on a 10" circle with a centre line hold. Always aim for hair, not air, and with a back line hold you are sweet to 400 yards plus. Beyond that you have time for 'sniper' technique with rangefinder and doped scope.
    I am 82 now and a bit old school I guess, and too old for our steep country here.... but we never used all the high tech gear back in the day because it didn't exist, but we got our deer to a quarter mile. Long shots like that were rare though.
    As for your Alaskan dudes, modern monolithic bullets have the penetration without disintegrating at high speeds (close range), so your 172gr loads would be the duck's guts.
    The oldies plumped for the heavy slow bullets as they don't blow up at close quarters, and it's close up that you cannot afford bullet failures on a big brown bear. He might be fatally wounded, but could kill you before he dies.... not a good day. Those big slow bullets at short range are great....even gas checked hard cast work really well, but have a trajectory like a rainbow so 100-150 is their limit really.......
    Personally, I've always felt that sniping deer from so far away they don't need to be stalked is a bit off.... but that's just me. Beyond 500 yards there are too many variables for the shot to be ethical unless conditions are perfect.... still air, level ground and a good solid rest. Those are rare here...
    I have always had a horror of leaving a 'woundie' in the bush. In NZ, if you don't drop your deer very fast, finding it is difficult, and if it is able to run away any diatance at all, finding it is impossible.
    The old 30-06 is a damn fine round by any measure.... a true "oldie and goodie", and it's available just about anywhere in the world that guns are allowed...

    I’m predominantly a western Wyoming high-altitude elk and mule deer hunter and fear sounding like a total ammo snob, but I’d argue that I’m just trying to stack the odds in my favor. Barnes and Hornady copper all-day. Sometimes E-Tips.
    I THINK if you added boxed Barnes 175g LRX to that list it would take top spot for drop and energy at extended ranges. This loading makes 30-06 a very capable 500 yard elk round.

    I like handloading. I wanted to confirm or deny Hornady's Superformance powder claims. Did it do what they said? It got pretty close. I selected a 165gr Hdy BTSP Interlock bullet. Why? I have a LOT of them. That powder gave me 2954fps 3196 ft.lbs. at the muzzle. Not the max load but close is where I found accuracy. I do recommend this powder. I found similar performances with Hornady LeveRevolution powder as well that helped my 150gr RN achieve 2445fps. My point is, there are a bunch of newer powders out there that can add some horsepower to the 30-06 AND produce very good accuracy. That 165gr load groups three shots at .5". (24" Rem 700 BDL). The 30-06 is far from dead. One other point. Momentum is little understood and almost never mentioned in ballistics conversations. I understand it but I could not teach it in a physics class. A professor explained it to me like this. Imagine an 18 wheeler and a pickup going 60 miles per hour. Which will stop sooner? The pickup? Why? The difference in momentum. Objects in motion will remain in motion until something acts upon them to change that. Those heavy bullets are definitely penetrators, given you are not trying to use them at too far of distances. The old guys from Alaska are not all wrong. That 220gr bullet once set in motion does not want to stop easily. They are probably getting a LOT of penetration on their bear AND the load worked, and the animal went down. Given the times they had their formative years with guns, they were using what was out there. Fast forward four or five decades, new bullets, new powders, different ball game. I personally think the ballistic sweet spot for the 30-06 is the 165gr. The WTW chart had a very weak 165gr load listed. Nothing wrong at all with it for pretty much anything you want to hunt, but that bullet can safely go much faster which changes the stats of course. Again, the 30-06 is proven, abundant, and fully capable for the majority of tasks most hunters have in mind. If your ranges are 300yds and in, it can be deadly. I try to get as close as possible. I am 65. I have used a 30-06 since I was a kid. I got know it and got proficient with it. With my bad shooting shoulder due surgery, these days I shoot the 6.5x55 a lot more for hogs and deer in South Texas in the brush country where I am. Vegetation and terrain variances limit shots to maybe 125yds. That soft recoil is a blessing.

    South African here. I really enjoy your videos.
    To be honest, it depends on where you hunt. If you’re going to hunt up north (Limpopo province), it’s very thick bushveld. So your shots is between 50-150 yards and the only time you shoot beyond 250yards, if your game is standing down the road. Anywhere else, the PH will get you within 250yards or less, take your shot. The bullet that you’ve selected is gonna work great on Eland and smaller antelopes. Happy hunting !

    30.06 still a classic. One of most versatile calibers. You used to be able to shoot 110-220 grains projectiles. I remember the excelerators sabot 55gr. People sell short the 220gr round nose. Yes, it is a flying bowling ball, but you can't beat the penetrating and brush-bucking power of this round. It'll drop all the biggest and most dangerous game on this continent. Just saying.
    Keep up the making these great videos.

    If you’ve never tried Norma Oryx 200 grain, they are awesome. Was using Remington 220gr for bear, and they were great too but lost a little accuracy based on the bullet starting to get a bit long for the twist. The 200 was Goldilocks. At 75 yards, broke both shoulders and put papa bear night night.

  • @WayStedYou

    It's funny with the 220s, most of the armies already learned that 100+ years ago and swapped their rounds from 190-200 grain down to 160-170 grain with a spitzer tip instead of round nose.

    • @K-bob_45
      @K-bob_45 17 дней назад

      Spitzer boat tail is optimized for flight. I think the real reason old timers like the round nose is for terminal performance. They’ll never blow apart(too slow) and they expand well due to the shape. Also due to the low velocity and shape you get good weight retention and penetration. Tipped bullets that are bonded or monolithic give you the best of both worlds

    All factory will be loaded to 60,000 pressure. Your reloads can be 65,000 in the newer bolt guns. 190 ablr can be shot past 2900fps in a 24”. A 180 CL tipped can be shot to near 3000fps. 30-06 will carry 1500lbs of energy past 700 yards. It is a hyper efficient cartridge. Out of my testing it has scored high in my top 3 for efficiency.

    Your drop with ur velocities are key components in ur rifle for ur doop of wat ur rifle gets vs the box. 50 fps to 80 fps difference down range can affect ur doop a bit with ur extreme spread in ur shots on the chronograph are cellulated. If ur trying to brake down the math in different adjustments of no quiet can to a quiet can added to ur muzzle at longer range diffences on impacts by a foot or by a few feet at longer range. Take a rifle to its max range where it shoots all over change the variables of things and see if ur rifle with those changes can improve those shot impacts
