This is considered by Ivan Martynov (biographer of Shostakovich) one of the great works of Russian (soviet) chamber music along with the 5th & 8th quartets of Myaskovsky & 2nd quartet of Prokofieff. See "Shostakovich: A Man and his Work", (1947), p. 100.

The Andante sounds inspired by Marche Slave

It's the same Serbian folk melody, which was quoted in Marche Slave by Tchaikovsky and Fantasy on Serbian folk themes by Rimsky-Korsakov and March funebre in the honour of Taras Shevtchenko by Ukrainian composer Mykola Lysenko.

A good piece - but "slavonic"? There are brush paintings of Scriabine and Ravel, not to mention Dvorjak. Thank you.
