    This is considered by Ivan Martynov (biographer of Shostakovich) one of the great works of Russian (soviet) chamber music along with the 5th & 8th quartets of Myaskovsky & 2nd quartet of Prokofieff. See "Shostakovich: A Man and his Work", (1947), p. 100.

    Toch's early chamber music is still vastly underplayed and underrated, notwithstanding that the situation has improved considerably over the past forty years. I remember attempting to draw the attention of various musicians to his music (notably, his chamber music) back in the early to mid-1980s. In those days very few professional musicians knew anything about Ernst Toch or his oeuvre. A masterful rendition of this splendid opus! Bravo!

    So beautiful!! Perfect play, just delightful. Discovered Toch just recently through the Cello Impromtu ( ruclips.net/video/CR-phKa2jys/видео.html ). What a shame, this wonderful composer has become forgotten in Europe to most of even the music-affine folks.

    Music is good when it arouses an emotion or a mood within you. it's not necessarily about being melodic or overtly musical, but about carrying the listener somewhere where he was not before. In this case, I feel like sitting on a park bench by a warm evening. the wind gently caresses my face, and everything is silent except for the nature around me. It is interesting that I mention that it evokes the silence when I speak of this kind of music.

    Foggy, undecided, a very slow violin solo which is only taken over by viola and cello when we may assume there was not too much else to be said. Then a myriad of flowers without petals, going on and on, as if an half-pizzicato was the main source. Odd.

      Do you have in mind a similar quartet that has more of what you'd call inspiration? I don't think I really know how to gauge a piece like that; I only think about whether I've enjoyed the particular passage that I'm listening to or not, and this piece offers me that consistently. What more should I ask for?

    First sequence of bars are kind of Brucknerian, promissing a teluric approach. Then the strings concentrate like deep rain by the merit of heavy dark clouds (Chostakovitch?), spread like in a wet plain (Wellesz?) and dissipate in winter fog. Interesting to be reviewed but nit the best I listened from Toch.

  • @josealexandre6632
    @josealexandre6632 7 лет назад

    Bartoknian, then Sbelian and finally Toch himself. His biographers will explain far better but why such an "intersected" music with an intimate piece almost at nr. 12 ? Makes you wonder what happened here... Thank you.

    @josealexandre6632 7 лет назад

    An "angry" quartet or where melancholy is a grizzy bear in a deep "closed and isolated" grand forest. Nothing against its natural consistency but I was used to listen to more optimist and sunshined tunes. I don´t know if somebody alreadey nicknamed this piece - I would call it "Pathetic" or "Grey Medidation". Thanks.

  • @josealexandre6632
    @josealexandre6632 7 лет назад

    An almost "perfect" quartet. The "square" (4 movs.) shows almost 90 degrees at each angle, and even the "pain" of the 3rd movement fits with the reality that is a sine qua non condition of being human. Magna cum cura ad curam. Grazzie.
