As a general PSA, you can't trust that bottom battery buffer on an "older" battery. The older the battery the further away from a 0% state of charge you want to be to avoid unexpected problems...
By 1st principle, a car's powertrain should be designed to not be damaged/degraded when used within it's specs. That would be from 100 to 0%. (E.g. RPM redline on an ICE.) If going to 0% really degrades the battery then it should have a built-in unusable buffer.
Thanks for taking one for the team 😂! By the way, you can drive your car while it is in service mode. That way you’ll be able to see the state of charge in the battery menu as it trickles down to zero. Keep up the great videos.
Yes and no ur limited to 7 mph an hour and if u take off that option it feels like your driving another car, wouldn’t recommend driving on service mode and you can’t control your app unless service mode is disabled
5:44 When Tesla battery reaches 0%, you can only drive for about 9 miles (nearly 15 km). After 9 miles, the vehicle will shut down automatically and won't restart until the battery is fully charged.
As a point of reference it is probably equivalent to running ICE car with a blown radiator. The amount of damage to the battery is probably similar to few years of normal use. Don't do this folks. Especially in the cold weather. Just stop at 2-3% and call a tow truck.
In case if someone is interested in exactly what happens inside the battery, search for video called "Battery Safety: What does deep discharge and overdischarge mean and why is it dangerous?"
Why make your life so hard? Buy a Toyota it last a lifetime. When you die you can pass to your kids and if you decide to sell it people are fight to buy it. Human some are so smart and some are opposite
Tesla Range estimate is always underestimated, never rely on what it tells you. Always estimate lower to be on the safe side. Range anxiety is real. Tesla capitalizes on supercharging, look at normal hour pricing. They want to discourage people from driving in the early hours but that is when charging prices are at the lowest.
I've been at 0 percent with 18 miles to reach a Supercharger. I know the route. It was uphill for a couple of miles or so and the rest downhill. Luckily, I made it with no issues. Definitely the worst range anxiety I've encountered. Do Not do this.
Very insightful and thanks for this experiment, Chris and Jan! Remember seeing an older video from CarWow in UK who got up to 50km at 0% SoC on their Model 3.
2018 3 Long Range and I've regularly arrived to chargers with 0% as long as another option was within 10 miles. I also regularly drive for Uber and hit 0% while ending a ride, then drive the 6 miles from downtown to home and have plenty left.
Everyday Chris & Everyday Jan… You guys are so cute with matching outfits and everything. And don’t forget Everyday Neighbor who saved the day even though he wasn’t home!

Good video, I have exact car and I did hit 0% once in Pasadena. I drove about 1 mile at zero. I heard the lithium phosphate model 3 might have 20, zero range. 9 not bad.
Got ~20 mi out of my old MS when it hit -0% outside Pittsburgh a couple years ago. Got to a SC, and the car’s DC/AC transformer failed. The Road Service agent stayed on the phone with me. Everything turned off, coasting down hills, very moderate speed up a few hills to get to the nearest destination charger. VERY anxiety provoking.
I recently drove from OKC to northern Montana and back over four days. Going from Billings to Great Falls, Montana, in the middle of the night, and arriving with less than 4%, created a lot of anxiety and emotion. Needless to say, that part of the country needs more superchargers.
In actuality there are so many Superchargers and 3rd party chargers these days that there is no reason anyone should be running out of charge. You just have to be aware, if not then there is no one to blame except yourself since the Tesla will give you a warning. No different than running out of gas. For real insurance you can also carry around a CCS1 adapter if you drive a Tesla or a can of gas if you drive an ICE, but does anyone do that?
I own 3 Tesla but I don't risk not even to 10%. My 2 Benz warning low on fuel is my trigger not to go beyond it's just common sense...very informative that almost cost you more than to gain subscribers...
If you ever have to push a dead car again try pushing on the tires to roll them forward. It applies much greater torque and can be easier than just pushing the car. I'm sure you can find a RUclips video showing it :)
Interesting... Sometimes you can drive 20 miles after reaching 0, from a few videos ive seen... But I definitely won't be testing that theory. Love my Model Y, the lowest I've ever gotten is about 12% battery.
I'm in my late 40's, my V6 and V8 engines have never got to 0% fuel. When I drive across the nation, I never worry about running out of fuel, worry about where I'm going to get fuel, or worry about how long it'll take to top off my fuel tank. I will NEVER own an EV..
When ur Tesla dies is is really scary. DH’’s Y was only a few months old and he’s never let the charge drop below 30%. Car had complete failure after a very strange battery warning while parked in garage. Had to call Tesla road side assistance and they sent tow truck out within 30 min. Took the tow truck driver a good 20 min to be able to jump the car, open the drunk to get to 12 V battery and get the car open and that was just to be able to get the car in neutral. We thought the car might have been a lemon- turns out rodents had gotten into our garage and chewed up the wiring 😫. My 2019 model 3 has never had this issue and was parked in the driveway.
Going in circles around you home will actually give you more range due to regen braking, you should’ve go to the highways, lol I don’t mean you to get stranded but that would make it even more extreme
What a nut,if that was my neighborhood,i'd have gone door to door taking bets on where you'd die, closest takes the cash, everyone else shuts off their power, kidding
10% battery degradation in 10,000 is unacceptable. My 2021 model 3 had a degradation of just 2% at 28,000 miles. Even this amount of degradation is bad. By comparison my 2021 Mach E has 59,000 and the battery has degraded 3%
@athiffaraz3117 I haven't had it for long. It's the previous owner that I wonder. I just charge it to 80% at home using a wall plug (20 amp receptacle). Teslas are known for degrading do 10% quickly and staying there for a while

It’s actually not bad to let the battery go to 0%, because the battery has a buffer to protect itself. It’s way worse to keep the battery higher than 55% for battery health. But it’s probably better to assume you only have 5 miles left at 0%.
