  • ►Brake rotors and pads are some of the most important wear items on any car. On a car with high mileage, it is critical to maintain and inspect your braking system often.
Usually, at every pad replacement, it is recommended that you inspect the braking system. You should be looking at the rotors for hot spots, rust, warpage, and to make sure they're within the minimum thickness specification which is listed on the hat of the rotor.
Today Nate Vincent, our Motorsport Director, along with his 5-year-old son, Oliver, tackle the front brakes on his new-to-him Volvo C30. During the brake job, he also shows you what else should be inspected while you're at it.

    DRY ROTTED BRAKE HOSE?!!
If you have concern of the brake hose cracking when you hang up the caliper, you need to change the hose.
    No question about it.

The most comprehensive diy so far. Thanks ! However, seems that something is not quite ok with my brakes. I have 300mm rotors, but my pads are not sitting inside the braking area as i see here.. the pads are a bit larger than the surface of the rotor.. Also the car suffering from slanted pads wear and vibration while braking. Need to look into it ASAP !

Many thanks! Only thing is when i was torquing the caliper bracket bolts back on they rounded off before i could get them to 120nm (the other side was fine) i did get aome tightness but id say more to about 60/80nm tightness before it happened. Should i be concerned?

HI Lewis, you most likely will be fine, if you can get a different size socket on it and double-check it, will certainly not hurt.

I have a 05' S40t5, and it's time for front brakes....It wasn't until I began shopping and comparing quality and prices, that I discovered that the model came with two different diameter rotors, I believe 300 and 320mm, and my car is a fwd auto. I've tried EVERYWHERE and EVERYONE I could think of, no one seems to be certain. Short of removing the wheels and MEASURING, I'm not sure what to do. Would you know? Would you know how to find out? Help!!!

@@fcpeuro I have not. Although I have done that w/ IDP since I've purchased a lot from them before. It was Thursday, so I probably won't hear back b4 Tuesday. Can't hurt to try FCP, but I haven't been successful finding parts for my Volvo....in fact, Someone responded to my request for price/availability...and wrote the following: We specialize in "European vehicles", and don't "feature" many volvo parts. On my honor, that's what he wrote back to me. Won't hurt to try again though. Thank you.

On your break housing the number should be on it.
So if it's 300 it will say 300 on it.
