The point about laziness is too real! I watch the BTS of movies and I’ll be like, “damn they really did all that for that little detail? I could never” lmao..but that’s what separates the greats from the average
One thing I’ve learned from doing music videos, is that you can’t compare yourself to a bigger music video Director from a creative & financial standpoint. Everyone’s journey different. The best way I learned to keep myself in check is to look at my own music videos and learn what I could’ve done better creatively and to see what I could’ve done better financially to aid the project not only for the artist but for my business. We as music video Directors must learn how to take a different approach in this industry it’s not always about the best content. But it’s also about how you market yourself and about, how can you provide a content solution to an artist so that they can make money from the music videos we create for them. That’s my 2 cent thank-you YC been watching you for 4 years now. Helpful content as usual always glad to hear you have the same struggles as all of us.
Mine, is to think big and then scale back according to restrictions like time or budget. Because its easier to scale back the vision and have and still have a super dope outcome, cos it harder to think bigger(scale) when you started small. Thanks for this, dope video as usual. Super sidenote; I do that colour grade thing too and I was so upset about a personal project I shot when I tried to grade one of the clips that I didn't even edit it at all (or put it out) Its been sitting not touched for about 3/4 months. I feel like you spoke to me with that point about dying judge until its finished. I'm gonna edit it over Christmas see that happens 🙏🏽
Not being lazy is probably the #1 for me. You NEVER want to cut a few minutes out of a shoot because "eh I don't feel like doing that" or whatever because when you're at the editing process, you're going to wish you took that time.
on my recent shoot my ronin kept tilting to the left even after preparing it hours before to make sure it was working right. i eventually went hand held because i came prepared with parts i needed for a steady hand held rig. then later that same shoot, i dropped and lost a brand new SD 356 GB card while i was changing SD’s. i prepared for that by bringing my tiny box of spares (mostly 64 GB’s) to finish the last scene. still made it work.
Nothing is worse is when the artist requests unnecessary effects slapped on bc it’s the thing to do but you had never previously discussed it during preproduction 🤦🏻♂️
Thanks for the tips, teacha. 🙏🏼 First it was hard being rejected when going from shop to shop offering shooting for free to get experience. The hardest thing is to know your price. I think it so much depends on you mind set and self value, I struggle the most with it. Thanks for sharing🙏🏼
Yeah 100%! In the end, you gotta take into consideration you’re being hired majority of the time because they trust you. You just have to trust yourself as well.
waiting till the end man, I gotta start doing this man. soon as something go wrong or shots not coming out exactly how I thought I think "damn I suck" lol.
Hey bro.. all the way from West africa. Gambia, I have watch and learn from most of your videos on your .I can say yes, I am grateful for you sharing your knowledge with all around the world.. Your words are touching. I really want to learn more. Be the best in my world, Africa ...
10:40 I think the most important thing to consider is less about price point but maybe the artist just likes what the other guy does more, taking it less as an objective judgement on your work and seeing it as subjective. Maybe the other guy pitched the artist better or they just naturally click better. There are a million reasons other than price point that may dig at the ego a little more but it just shows that we're all people who are looking for who we want to work with, and if someone doesn't want to work with you at this time it's probably for a good reason, be it price, style, personality, etc. We're all just looking for good collaboration that lets us make what we want to make - filmmaker, musician, actor, producer, writers alike.
I always get lazy when going from gimbal to handheld because I usually gotta remount my monitor and top handle to my camera.. and it only takes about 2 mins but I always just end up shooting way too much stuff either handheld or on the gimbal to avoid the time it takes to set up my rig ..
planning part very true. I spent so much time planning every detail only to shoot an entire project with the wrong sd card, was just a heartbreaking moment
Watching this video again. I agree with YC on the lighting taking way longer to get right than expected 🤦♂️ but when I get it right, it's worth the time that I put in 💯💪🔥
“Separate the art from yourself” is the hardest thing to do. If I’m taking on a project I look at it as if it’s my own but i definitely have to step back a lot and detach.
I starting to notice lately this behavior of creators or director or whatever the heck you want to call yourself doing projects revolving around colorgrading, thats telling me they’re not too many director around anymore, just dp’s and colorgrading Artist, who cares about color and shit, story is key period.
It’s always a good feel when clients go elsewhere. It gives you a sense of relief as often times clients questions their decision. If they did the right thing, great. If not charge well when they come back
You deliver great info. Question. What do you use to keep the camera mounted SECURELY. I just invested in Sigama lens--the weight always for easily fall out!!! What do you use to keep secure?
Your hair game is 🔥🔥🤩.. lighting LIGHTING is something to mr as a photographer and videographer .. the shadows and litter areas, natural light 💡 everything.. learn it
Working with different types of people has shown me that getting on the same wavelength as the person you're filming with is very important, even if that means you have to put on an act, what do y'all think?
Dont take anything personal is a hidden gem.... talking to other videographers alot of us start to become bitter and feel burned out about our craft because we dont feel valued or because we are getting lowballed but watch these same people spend money on other things.

Big reason why I’m at the point I am now is thanks to you and Ryan and your brother. Much love and appreciation for y’all
i work on feature films everyday we will film shit all day that gets cut or is only gonna be a 10 second clip in the end
your one click can change my whole life 🙏😭😭🙏,,,,,,,,,

Thanks for sharing🙏🏼
Yeah absolutely! Standing in your price is big
Amen!🙏🏼 💯
I learned to tap into my confidence to unfold my potential. Confidence really can have you scared to do projects.
Yeah 100%! In the end, you gotta take into consideration you’re being hired majority of the time because they trust you. You just have to trust yourself as well.

Sick vid! 💪💪💪
Appreciate it
The movie part is absolutely correct. 15 years as an actor, 8 to 16 hours on sets for a 30 to 1 min commercial. 10 sec clips in movies
Always transparent and real 🙏🏻😌 appreciate your content.
Thx man. Can you make a video on how much you charge has evolved with time? You can make up figures. Just need advice. Thx for the great video.
Awesome video! Thanks for the information, you're definitely on point.
Quality over quantity! Thanks for the tips bro

Lighting takes 3 times longer than you expect,Truuueee😆
Creating a storyboard beforehand makes the process so much easier when it's time to film
Always great videos. Thanks!!!

Calling using handheld lazy over setting up a gimble made me 🤣
I've def experienced all of these at some point or another in my past 10 years of shooting music videos.
I always get lazy when going from gimbal to handheld because I usually gotta remount my monitor and top handle to my camera.. and it only takes about 2 mins but I always just end up shooting way too much stuff either handheld or on the gimbal to avoid the time it takes to set up my rig ..
What advice you got for someone that just move to a new state and looking for new clients. How to get more exposure?
3 hours late is wild disrespectful unless it was some type of emergency
Definitely not taking things personal and sh*t can and will go wrong
planning part very true. I spent so much time planning every detail only to shoot an entire project with the wrong sd card, was just a heartbreaking moment
Which lence its the best when shooting a video with a canon 2000D
Couldn’t agree more on every single one you spoke on!
Thanks, always on fire 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥
OMG!!! The "it's so easy to be lazy" was the motivational speech I needed today because it spoke to where I am, Dec 1,2021.
Thanks for this video
definitely hitting that reset button and start over on a different day if it doesn’t go well the first time (editing )

I like coming up with ideas for the artist but it makes it creative for me when the artist has their own idea and lets me add my own ideas on top.

great video👍I don't shoot music videos but I still learned a lot!
