This is fascinating. You can really understand why Toscanini is not just the greatest conductor of all time, but also one of the greatest musicians. His musical knowledge and understanding is fantastic. Listening to him sing like this is amazing. Plus he is doing it out of his memory, without reading a score. He had memorized hundreds of operas and classical compositions. Who else has ever compared to him?

I think both are great, each in his own way. it is difficult to compare them fairly from their recordings, because Furtwängler was born nearly 20 years later than Toscanini. He was at the peak of his powers when many of his recordings were made. Toscanini, in contrast, was in his late 70s and early 80s when most of his recordings were made. To me, many of these recordings are great, but it is undeniable that they are more rigid than his earlier performances. To hear Toscanini in his 60s when he was at his peak, one has to go back to the few recordings we have of him from the 1930s, with inferior sound. "Furtwängler bleibt als Dirigent und Musiker unerreicht, das bestätigen alle Musiker, die mit ihm gearbeitet haben." I readily believe that, but the same is true of the musicians who worked with Toscanini. His 1931 Parsifal at Bayreuth was greatly admired, and Winifred Wagner tried very hard to get him back. Toscanini was fiery like the sun; Furtwängler was deep as the ocean. The world is lucky to have had both of them! By the way, have you heard Yannick Nézet-Séguin? I think he is the greatest living conductor. Look up his Tchaikovsky Romeo and Jukiet and Beethoven 6th.

Toscanini anche se irruento non va messo in discussione. A 80 anni fa delle prove incredibili che non hanno confronti con altri. Urlerà e sarà anche a tratti sgradevole ma i risultati li abbiamo visti tutti e resta il più grande direttore di tutti i tempi e l'Otello non è stato eguagliato da nessuno. Certo alcuni cantanti non hanno dato il meglio come la Herva Nelli, ma Ramon Vinay e Giuseppe Valdengo sono strepitosi e l'orchestra è veramente formidabile. La drammaticità e l'unità dell'opera viene resa da Toscanini in tutto il suo splendore. Le critiche non hanno giustificazione e dovrebbemmo essere fieri di avere avuto Toscanini che viene apprezzato in tutto il mondo e ultimamente riscoperto in tutta la sua eccellenza grazie a tante incisioni live che prima non c'erano.

Anche se Otello è lo stesso Ramon Vinay il risultato del canto è disastroso e ci sono gli insieme orchestrali sconnessi e con tempi decisamente poco Verdiani. Furtwangler avrebbe fatto meglio ad evitare un'impresa così fuori dalle sue corde. Ricordiamoci che sotto il profilo Operistico Furtwangler ha diretto circa 30 opere mentre Toscanini oltre 150 e tutte a memoria. Una bella differenza.
Tutta la musica diretta da Lui sembra cosi' giusta.si potra' discutere all'infinito sulle scelte dinamiche ma io lo sento cosi' spontaneo e sincero innanzitutto ....viva
Toscanini is singing exactly what Verdi wrote in the score. Moreover, you know for sure that Toscanini was sitting in the cellos sections in 1887 when Otello was first produced, with the supervision of the same Giuseppe Verdi. At the time this rehearsal was recorded noone was closer to Verdi's musical feelings than Arturo Toscanini.

The legend of Toscanini rehearsal explosions is exaggerated. If you listen to a lot of his rehearsals, he is intense and insistent about musical details, but screaming and tantrums are actually rather rare. Of course, the explosions are the rehearsal moments that get all the attention. But what you hear on this tape is how he usually worked - intense but calm and all business. He usually only lost his temper if he felt the orchestra was not paying attention or giving its all to the music. For example, in the rehearsals for "La Traviata" in 1946, out of hours of rehearsals, with orchestra alone and with the singers, there are only three real outbursts, and two of them involve the double basses being behind the beat. ("Where your ears? Do you have your ears in your FEET?!? Corpo d'un dio santissimo!!") And even then, the explosion at the basses in Act 2 only comes after he has pointed out several times that they are behind the beat. ("Bravioli, you are very good bass, but in Italian opera you are TERRIBLE!!")

Interestingly, although Toscanini was known to demand musical singing that fits the written music, and did not welcome singers who sought a lot of freedom for their vocal line, his own singing here indicates that he would have introduced a ton of emotion and nuances into his singing of this music if he actually had a great singing voice.

Karajan era uno dei sostenitori della Arturo Toscanini Society che aveva diverse registrazioni live che non erano quelle pubbliche della RCA. Spesso nel confrontare alcune esecuzioni di Karajan riscontro tantissime somiglianze con quelle esecuzioni di Toscanini soprattutto in Beethoven, Mozart e Verdi

It must not be forgotten thatToscanini played cello in the orchestra, with Verdi himself conducting, at the world premiere of "Otello" in 1887.

I believe the conductor was Franco Faccio. Verdi did attend rehearsals and gave notes to the orchestra.
