  • These are edited extracts from the original television transmission of 'The Art of Conducting' and feature three great 20th century maestros: Wilhelm Furtwängler, Arturo Toscanini and Leopold Stokowski. The contributors include violinists Hugh Bean and Yehudi Menuhin, musicologist Hans Keller, conductors Sir Georg Solti and Mariss Jansons, record producer Richard Mohr, composer and conductor Oliver Knussen, and clarinetist Jack Brymer. The complete original programme dates from 1993, so due to its age these excerpts are uploaded here under 'fair use' terms and conditions. Furtwangler's Brahms 4 has never been bettered. Absolutely coruscating performances.

I don’t know anything about Rattle and the last 5 in your list, but your omission of Furtwangler, Wagner and even Ansermett is like a sacrilege.

Toscanini is one of the Terror conductor even today. I love him and Admired him the most. Believe me or not, He's pretty quiet sensitive. And lastly, They obeyed him time by time.

An orchestra now must be persuaded, not terrorized.

@@canalesworks1247I would argue he was kind and loving and very giving. People take criticism personally. He demanded the most out of his musicians all in the service of making the best possible music for the listener with integrity. Everyone is weak and temperamental today and can’t handle the heat. Playing at the highest level doesn’t require weak musicians that get offended by the prospect of having a high standard of excellence. Perfection requires discipline and soundness of mind and understanding you are a servant of the music. You owe the world to play it right and not half assed. That’s my personal opinion on this matter and people usually target him like he’s a criminal. As musicians we have a duty to the music and a job to do right. Anything less is mediocrity not worth listening. That’s why he’s a legend and still revered today. He made music at the highest level and didn’t half ass it and he demanded his musicians to follow him in his pursuit of excellence.

I am in the extreme Furtwangler camp. I have listened to many of those Toscanini NBC broadcast performances and they are not as "precise" as people claim them to be. The myth of Toscanini's "precision" is overstated.
If therefore precision was not always achieved but there is also not the Innigkeit offered by Furtwangler (especially in German music) what then?
There are many conductors in addition to Furtwangler that I prefer to Toscanini, incuding Bruno Walter, Otto Klemperer, Hans Knappertsbusch and even Karajan. All of them offer more than just "come scritto". Many of them also offer as much precision as Toscanini, perhaps even more. Walter and Karajan in particular.
