As a former police officer I always messured from the tip to the end of the sharp area of the blade. What I would take into consideration is the part of the blade that could do damage or cut not the dull area.

That's cool, and I'm all for officer discretion, but it sucks relying on it. IE: My friend is NYPD, recently retired. I asked him about such stuff...."up state, most cops don't care, and you'll be fine"...well, what if I get the one that does care?..."That's legal in the city, but most of these cops don't know, and they'll arrest you anyway and let the judge figure it out"...sigh

@@robertmoran7024 I don't know how it is in new York but in South Florida is open carry. The length 4 inches is for some one carrying a conceal knife, on the other hand 99 percent of the time you won't be bothered unless you were involved in something.

Hello DCA. I just wanted to give you a little update. A short while ago I asked you for an advice on an upgrade for my douk-douk as a secondary blade on my outdoor adventures. You recommended me a delica or endela, choices i would have never gone for because i don't really like the looks and, i guess, because i like to dislike what everybody likes. Anyways, i followed your advice somewhat unconvinced, and i must tell you that you were so very right ! That delica is just perfect for that intended purpose. So, thank you very much Sir, you are even more knowledgable than i thought ! Also, i told you it'd be great if the knife you adviced for could strike a firesteel and you told me the delica would be easily modified. Well, no need for modifications my friend, the gimping part throws sparks just fine ! Thanks again ! JBD

Where I am in Australia we're lucky in that blade length is not an issue. Our legislation focuses on why you are in possession of the knife (which definitely has its own problems - for example, self defence is NOT a lawful reason for carrying a knife). So carrying a 4 inch blade for work is perfectly legal, but carrying a 1 inch blade for no specific reason is illegal. Thankfully we only have 8 police forces in Australia so compliance is only an issue when you cross a state border.

As much as I think the laws are outdated, the intent of them was to limit penetrating depth in stabbings to help avoid hitting vital organs, in which case the entire blade is what would need to be measured. When stabbing, the knife tends to penetrate to the hilt/handle, so thats why the laws were written that way.
