How wonderful that your children understand chinese. As a japanese american, I don’t remember ever understanding my
Mothers native language aside from the most common words, even though we heard the language every day. She said she gave up speaking only japanese to us as we entered school because we started understanding her less and less. Don’t ever stop speaking chinese to your kids, even when it embarrasses them. They will thank you when they are older.

I know alot of Hispanics in my area only speak Spanish in their home. So my coworkers daughter is having a hard time entering school because she's not that good at English but eventually she will learn and be great at both languages

I can't tell you how much I wish I could speak fluent Japanese. :( To be multi-lingual is the most enviable superpower. Kids need to learn young and be exposed to it all consistently, you're so right. And they will all thank their parents when they're older, or at least you'd hope they'd be aware enough of their great good fortune in life.

That is the most awe inspiring aspect of this woman in my opinion. I married into a Russian family 6 years ago and STILL have not grasped the language. I have been trying to learn that darned language for 5 years now, so the fact she can speak so fluently is amazing to me. I have kind of made up for my poor Russian language abilities by learning how to make my husband's favorite Russian dishes (his parents taught me ❤️). Marrying interculturally can be a huge challenge, but once you get over at least SOME of the language barrier, any culture shock, the family members who hate the fact you're tarnishing the bloodline, and immerse yourself into each others' lifestyle/culture/family traditions, it is honestly so much fun. Congrats to her for 16 years! That's a darn goal right there! We've already passed my father-in-law's prediction of 2 years, so here's to 2^6 (hopefully lol) more for me!

  • @luomanfei

Your story with your husband was really touching. Long distance relationship is hard, language barrier is hard, cultural differences is also hard. Plus you guys both had families prior, there were a lot of adjustments to be made.

I do have a question, were you overwhelmed with that BIG BEAUTIFUL house? Also, I too had to leave not one but 3 beautiful children behind due to my ex husband being VERY bitter that I wanted a divorce. He hired 3 lawyer's and basically took them from me, so I can understand the absolute heartbreak you felt with your daughter. They're all adults with children now and I do communicate with 2 of my children. Unfortunately my oldest chooses not to communicate with me. One of the best things anybody can do for their children is expose them to and keep them speaking in multiple languages. It really is a superpower. And if you are an immigrant, to keep children connected profoundly to their 'ancestral culture' is something to be treasured. Kids tend to fight this sometimes, it's just not 'cool' or it's too different to their peer group and at a certain age they can get easily embarrassed by being 'different or weird' but it's worth gently, proudly persevering. One day they'll realise how 'cool' it is. In later life they will realise how incredibly fortunate they were/are to have these 'superpowers' and these fascinating, rich layers to their Being and they won't be able to find the words adequate enough to express the weight of the gratitude to you. It's wonderful.

this is too adorable. My husband is from fuijan and he speaks only a little english but we have pure love. We are both working on learning each other’s main language. Mandarin is difficult to learn and write but i bet chinese feel the same about english. completely different origins of these languages. we understand each other better than anyone else could. love has no language and i am open minded to learn more about the Chinese culture and language for the sake of our relationship. a little every day to learn helps.

    Hello, hello!
    Happy Anniversary 🎉🥳
Thanks for being so inspiring, a wonderful Mom and great cook. You overcame such a culture shock with grace and ease by the look of it. All the best from Canada 🇨🇦 My best friend and co-worker in the 80's said I must be 1/4 Chinese because there wasn't a dish I didn't like. (Took me a while to get used to chicken feet 😂)
I love your pickle jar: I've seen Li Ziqi use similar ones so I've been saving for one I saw online.
