My guess for all the cat-people stuff, since it was added in after Super Paper Mario's initial release, is that they were assets for an entirely separate game being worked on using SPM's game engine, but ultimately cancelled. It's a shame, too; it looks very cute, and I would've loved to see it come to fruition, whatever it may have been.
The strange part is though, they're only in the Korean version. My guess is that IS just lazily ported the latest version of SPM to Nintendo Of Korea without checking it's files or anything.
Maybe a bit of a conspiracy theory, but I think it tells a bit of a story along with the massive changes that came to the Paper Mario series next. TTYD actually apparently was apparently a bit of a fight to get through, and they had to constantly work with Miyamoto presenting new ideas (namely, coincidentally, the paper stuff is what convinced him it was innovative enough). Then they say that they probably would never really return to the TTYD style for the series after SPM, which COINCDENTALLY is also totally, completely different and full of new gimmicks and innovation they could advertise, like it being a 2D sidescroller now and the 2D-3D thing especially. And then a few days after its release, they begin work on a new game, seemingly totally separate from the Mario IP, that uses the same engine as SPM and TTYD, and is made in a very Paper Mario-like way using the same camera tricks and 2D characters in a 3D world.. I think this is the story of some "official" paper mario spiritual successor that was gonna be made since they couldn't do what they wanted to do with the Mario series anymore, almost like if Bug Fables was cats instead and made by the actual Paper Mario devs. But then, for whatever reason, it was cancelled. Honestly quite sad.
The unused Yold Town residents look similar to Mimi. They (besides the yellow one) all look at the screen, have stick figure limbs, a square head with a gradient color that gets lighter at the forehead, and simple face with cheeks. The girl also has a bow similar to Mimi’s. From the one with animations and from the prerelease screenshots we can se that their idle and talking animations were mostly identical to Mimi’s. Perhaps the Yold Town residents were leftovers from when every character looked like this, and they changed the character style later. The must have decided they liked Mimi’s old design and kept it anyway.
With the varying styles of Cats and the stitched environment it gives me the feeling that it was based on a storybook-esque setting. My head's rushing with possible plots for it...
I seriously love Super Paper Mario, the villians really make this game shine. I actually listen to the unused music by itself often, its really good stuff! Thank you for going more in depth with the cut content!
The cut Yold Town residents actually do still have animations in their files, they just use pointers that don't match those of the NPCs they replace in the footage from Skawo's video. If you edit them to match, the animations work (I tested this). Also, Dimentio has a walking animation that goes unused since he never walks in any cutscene or battle. (I did make use of it in my mod that makes him playable though)
Super Paper Mario: a strange game with even stranger cut content. To be honest, i never really got used to this game but it's very interesting to see when didn't get used. Awsome job, as always.

It seems like they were creating a sort of spin off of Paper Mario about Cats. I wonder if had they went with this Cat RPG we’d have a new Nintendo character.
just judging by the art style of those cats, i don't think they were meant to be in a paper mario game. which i think is odd, because it's saved in a localization of SPM two years after its initial release, rather than just on its own.
The map (with the forest) was probably a world map. It's also probably a game with NPCs, or a party of 4. It seems to be a cancelled 3D RPG early in development with a few levels intact. It has the paper feel, and had cats, but the name of the game is probably called Kat. KRI stands for Kat RPG Intelligent Systems. It's not a part of Paper Mario, since it has a different art style and the cat player is a party member (team of 4). The game is a scrapped game, and the cats were tests for art styles (which I think is the case). It would be a game with cats and forests. The cats are in a story book, and was a night story from a stuffed animal. The cats are in the forest, and meet each other. That's what I think was what the game was like. I'm not sure if I'm right or not. I will mod the game and make what Intelligent System's RPG Platformer in a forest will be like to play... Strange! 11 levels? It has a story of stitching, it is a spinoff of Paper Mario, but much different. It has powerups, items, and more. You can play as the black cat, and can be considered an NPC or a beta for a player. Probably with a front view battle system, summons, and mock powerups. You can meet cats.
just a theory I came up with... you remember those scenes after completing each world where you can read conversations between Blumiere and Timpani, right? SPOILER WARNING: What if Tippi (Timpani) was originally planned to be one of those cat people - most likely the white one - before she got turned into the butterfly pixl? Maybe they originally planned those conversations to be playable parts where you play as Tippi in her normal form and find out about her backstory like that? Kinda like those parts in Paper Mario 2 where you can play as Peach and Bowser, but here you alternate between playing as Mario and Tippi. Maybe those other cats were supposed to be friends of her and you play through the part of her story where she first met Blumiere / Count Bleck and fell in love with him and then she had to leave the other cats behind. Damn that would actually have been very interesting to see.
I'm wondering how the heck a whole unused game ended up on a release that happened 2 years later. What, were the Korean translators using the disk for their own game before scrapping it and just put Super Paper Mario's code on it as well so it would have use?
Because the areas have a different art style doesn't mean anything, because you forget every level of SPM is in another world/dimension, with their own art style, so they could work. Shame we didn't get Cat Land.
Level 6 should look familiar, and maybe also 7 as they look like they're based off Forever Forest from the first Paper Mario game. My strong guess are these were probably engine prototypes (eg, how big can we make it, how deep can we make it, can we make it rotate, etc), like with the pieces of 1000 year door you find in it. The fact the cats are named after employees also adds credence to this. Perhaps what actually happened was the Korean localization team unlocked it to test the text formatting and wasn't aware these were not part of the game, having no text in them.
Ya but.. only in the Korean version years after the others release dates? Would makes more sense if the scrapped things were in the Japanese files.. So maybe it was some scraps of a Korea game that was some basis for the Korean port of the game

Awesome video! Really surprising.
5:56 I'm pretty sure that's a bow
I need to get around to playing this again at some point; loved this game. :)
There is no way the cats aren't part of a scrapped ip.
I'm so interested in the fact that some of this stuff was created after the game was released. Why?
Probably some stuff from a prototype of a new game that managed to work its way into this game's files.
The unused ladder animation is actullay seen in the final game, you just need to do the Fleep Ledge Cancel glitch
Maybe there was a game in development at the time, and some artist was also working on the game that was never realesed and had free time in development of super paper Mario, and made art for that. Some person saw the files, and used it in a test level
One thing I always wanted to see was the GameCube version of this game. I'm pretty sure it was completed they just never released it
I really love this game ^w^❤️, thanks for the information
Do the cut content of the Pokemon Series, especially Mystery Dungeon!
Fuck Super Paper Mario. It was the beginning of the end for an amazing game series.
Yea super paper mario was the last good paper mario game
Love you TCCO.
You should make the volume of the backgroundmusic a little bit down btw, otherwise everything's fine like always :)
Omg the Korean version was released on my birthday 10 years ago
Awesome Video
the ladder pixl is breadward
This video is in the Mario Games, Nintendo Games, and Every Episode playlist three times, but isn't in the Season 2 playlist at all? Ok sure
3:03 made one day after i was born
No dont do that .Dont give me hope
Those cat characters are fuckin adorable
Why do I remember many of the songs being in the game?
This is so random! I love it! Wonder what the game would have been?
Think you could take a look at Symphony of the Night? It's got some really neat stuff in it.
6:31 cat mario theme xD
Paper Mario looks like a high-res Super Mario World Mario
I think maybe the cats and other stuff was for a retooling of spm for Korea, but in the end they still went with the paper Mario stuff
