A lot of us first knew Jack Black and Kyle Gass as Tenacious D. They were a comedy song duo before he was a movie star. You should check out their HBO series that started in 1994. Very funny. And Pick of Destiny was the Tenacious D movie which featured Dio in the film.

Lifelong rock/metal guy here. So yeah, The D is legit, and Jack Black is truly a multi-talent. He definitely does sing/play his instruments and you’re onto something in that he seems to be doing what he wants and it just works. To be a comedic genius takes a certain talent on one hand. On the other, it takes another talent to be a musician. To have a talent for either is awesome, to have both is amazing. To be able to make both work simultaneously…that’s just off the charts. And yeah, I’ll cast another vote for you guys doing Master Exploder. You have to do the video, and get ready to piss yourselves laughing!

Jack Black is the GOAT. One my favorite actors of all time. Also seems like a genuine and kind dude. Great musician as well. His singing voice is actually very beautiful. He’s literally a Jack of all trades lol.
Although they are kind of a joke/novelty act, they have been around for like 25 years and a lot of rock fans grew up with them. JB can sing his ass off and KG is a pretty good guitarist and backup vocalist. Also they’ve had a lot of really talented collaborators over the years (most notably Dave Grohl on the drums). Rise of the Felix is about their historic comeback after their movie/album “The pick of Destiny” was a bomb. All their stuff done with humor, and most is done with idea that they are a mystical great band. The movie they are referencing is actually hilarious if you know what you are getting in to…and the album from the movie is great. The band is Jack Black and his brother in law Kyle Gass on guitar, plus a lot of famous guests like Dave Grohl. While its all comedy, they actually have some great songs.
Pick of Destiny the movie is an absolute masterpiece, the title track of the movie though is pretty lame compared to the epicness of other songs on the album

Some of their songs are more serious than others, but the band itself is mostly aiming for skill-filled comedy. They're heavily inspired by Dio, Maiden, Metallica, Priest, and various other classics. I wouldn't put them on my playlist, but they're always nice for a few listens here and there (just like Weird Al). I'm still recommending "Holographic Universe" by Scar Symmetry! Or, hell, any melo-death metal, at this point.

If you guys didn’t know since their tv show and first album they have a song called Dio and he is part of the mythology and story of Tenacious D. Ronnie Dio loved Tenacious D and they appeared in a Dio Music video and then Dio was in their rock opera movie the Pick of Destiny
Jack Black definitely loves music and is a fan of music. He was one of the artists they called for the Elliott Smith tribute concert (RIP) and he sang “Say Yes” (which is a great song). He cares a lot about the music, which is why it’s so easy to like the guy. I’d suggest reacting to Elliott Smith, but the metal heads here would be like, “nooooooooooooooooo” so maybe not.
