I agree with you about The Trop, a missed opportunity. Why not advertise the oldest rooms on the strip all the way to a last birthday for the place. Give it a real send off. You are right about Riviera too... they embraced Las Vegas history and their place in it.

Man, you know it's bad when perpetually calm Shawn gets this worked up about Trop. Totally agree with everything you guys said, glad I got my last stay in back in November. No need to pay these high prices.
That being said, you guys left out the worst part about Trop closing: losing a place to use Hilton points on the strip. Which means one less place to avoid resort fees on award stays. While Waldorf and Resorts World are fine properties, they are not the bargain that Trop was. This, compounded with the Bonvoy takeover of MGM (and paying resort fees on their award stays) is an extra punch in the gut.

I stayed at Riviera a couple of months before the closed. We were still comped our room, a buffet, a comedy show with JJ, and got some free t-shirts. We had a great time. The rooms and comps were not of the highest quality but it gave me a good feeling of their last moments. I still have the t-shirt which is falling apart but it has good memories. As far as Tropicana the only time i went i got a small win from their 007 Bond slot machine so i will remember them as a winner!! 😊

I stayed on the last night (and visited many times in her last months) and it was run the same until the end. They kept all of the rooms open, sold them at a decent price and filled the place with people who were there to send her off in style. Quite the opposite with the Trop unfortunately. They started shutting down the place months ago.

As someone who's worked in hotels for almost 40 years, not in LV though. The lock situation is just..... weird! It is a cardinal rule to not bypass a DND, BUT to then do that, and "fix" the lock and have those huge holes in the door frame. The lock is compromised at this point, and basically worhtless.

Hopefully the movie studio does well. I’ve been watching Vega$ since the DVDs aren’t too pricey on Amazon and I can’t imagine a TV show being able to film on location like that anymore. The show is a great time capsule of Vegas in the 70s and it’s funny how quickly Dan Tanna can drive up and down the Strip back then. When they made Las Vegas they fictionalized the casino whereas Vega$ filmed inside casinos like the Desert Inn, Aladdin, Dunes, Tropicana, and Circus Circus.

Vegas needs a complete overhaul from security, hospitality, prices you name it. As a long time player, Vegas is no longer in my bankroll and I spent plenty over my 5-7 day stays. I am sure I am not alone on this. There is so much other competition in North America and around the world now.
A suggestion if I go again is to stay( Green Valley Ranch eg and do a day trip or two to the strip madness. Anyway I am glad I went in 1978 up toThe mid nineties before it became Disneyland with gambling. My visits from mmid nineties to 2019, not the same. A do not disturb sign is basically for housekeeping services. All hotels can knock and enter any room to do what they consider health and safety inspections or repairs. The latch may have been reported days ago and they are just getting to it. I also go to vegas and ac often and im probably not as concerned about this kinda stuff. I usually keep all valuables in the room safe etc and dont leave around personal stuff. As far as Ballys even in ac they are cutting back a lot. Now its draft beer for players and they really track you as far as freebies. Even if you get a mailing if you have not been in a while you may find you have to go to the desk and voice your concern. Where the trop was is a perfect place for mgm to rebuild a new improved mirage. Id love to see somekind of a rebirth of what the trop was festive tropical vibrant without being another cookie cutter ripoff of bleu or resorts world..just sayin

Over the last few years I had interaction with the maintenance crews of several Las Vegas hotels, mostly 4 and 5-stars venues. I am talking about the A/C not working at all, or the desk chair broken to the point of being useless. The maintenance guys were always very competent and willing to fix problems. However, what I was given to understand is that they are now very short staffed and have been moved to 'maintenance on demand' while doing little to no normal nor preventive maintenance. It means that maintenance occurs when a hotel guest lodges a complaint or when significant damages are occurring (e.g. a water leak). This new normal is disappointing as guest are kind of forced to be maintenance inspectors. My suggestion is that as soon as you get in your room, check everything and phone housekeeping to get things fixed. If not fixed quickly enough, then directly ask the room cleaners to get things fixed, but insist that they place the maintenance call request on the spot.

The pool area with its grassy and tropical area, the shows ,the cabana suites was not enough to bring people in. In the end the hotel was used to house many flight crews. Bally's bought the trop at a low price recently and is not the reason for its demise. Why would Ballys celebrate Tropicana and have a big party when no one really patronized the Tropicana. People like the idea of Tropicana but never really spent any time or money at the Trop.

Sadly the safe bet will be the site is sold before the end of the year, and will be a fenced-off desolate lot for the better part of a decade with the only hope being MGM swoops in and "saves the day".

@@Milestomemories I agree, but the reason MGM may not feel motivated to go all-in on scooping up the site is because they like having massive resorts with tall towers, and its proximity to the airport may pour cold water on their hopes.
I still feel Tropicana’s Paradise and Club towers were reasonably tall being about twenty stories each, and MGM Grand is right across the street after all: so it isn’t like MGM is forced to build a humble boutique resort there. But we’ll see I suppose.

I notice that "obliterated steak" was from Robert Irvine's. LOL We had an "unlimited comp meal" a couple years ago that we used at Robert Irvine's restaurant. We ended up ordering entrée after entrée after entrée... Not because it was free, but because the food was utter garbage. Tough steak, cold, undercooked ribs, etc etc etc etc. They serve fries with literally EVERYTHING. And even the fries were served lukewarm or cold every single time. As a forever-curious person, I asked why the fries keep coming out cold with every dish we ordered. They said the make a giant batch at a time and let them sit so it's saves the chefs time from having to actually cook fresh ones. I was stunned at the process, and at our server's honesty. Every single entrée ended up being total garbage until the very end. In hundreds of dollars worth of food (for 2) we gave up trying. They wanted us to take everything to go, but we declined. In the last 1000+ meals we've had in Vegas on or off strip, Robert Irvine's was the absolute worst. Being the #1 worst restaurant food/service/experience isn't easy, but they succeed when it comes to being a total failure on every level.
I guess I should admit that while losing the Tropicana to clueless/plan-less Bally's Corporation is a an absolute tragedy, seeing Robert Irvine's restaurant leveled will bring us a certain amount of joy and happiness. At least an empty lot will have some redeeming qualities. Good riddance!

But we heard a LOT about Rio’s door latches (more than one show), and so much content for MONTHS about the decay of the Tropicana it’s becoming depressing. Perhaps all the journalists should get together and film an informal tribute to the property in an entire episode and reveal their memories about the property, and show some historical content (you’ve shown some history once I believe and THAT was good stuff).
