FYI if you have a decent pair of internal snap ring pliers you can use them if you're in a pinch to remove a master link. If you're going to find yourself doing this somewhat frequently I would strongly advise getting one of these, however.
it works, you just have to put the three letter w infront of it. youtube doesnt let you post links (or even three w), so it had to be shortened to allow the post. basically the missing link can be opened by holding it up using the teeth of the front chainring then tapping one end of it with a something. apparently kmc has made the newer missing links harder to open for safety.
hrm just ordered a kmc chain and read the missinglink is hard to remove. Hope I don't actually need these tools. With my sram link I just pull some slack by holding the rear mech forward, and fold the links down (together) on each side of the master link and use regular pliers to squeeze the two links to the side of the master link together. (imagine 180degree turn) Worked after years of not taking it apart no problem.
Just use a 10 speed wipperman. They don't need any tools to take on or off and are reusable so you can take your chain on and off without needing to spend money on a new link everytime you open the chain. I use one on my xtr 10 speed instead of the bullshit shimano pin and have never had trouble with the chain or shifting. Just make sure to buy a new one when you replace your chain.
not sure what link that was but it doesn't look secure >< and yeah, i'll never buy another soft and stretchy sram chain, discovered kmc many years ago, the last one outlived my bike (5 years+\-), i use a lot of pedal pressure and heavy gears compared to spinning. bought another for this new bike. nuff said >
+Fractal Life its the standard link for most sram and kmc chains if im not mistaken. its also a great item to have with you on long rides, especially if you have a broken chain.. much easier to use this to rejoin your chain.. its also easier to remove if you wanna give your chain a thorough wash.. dont know if its used by roadbikers.. but its pretty common enough for mountain bikers.
I just tried this with a cheap pair of reversible split-ring pliers, and it worked pretty well.
