  • It's time for some more hemp lime plastering. We've done quite a bit of this already but never over stud walls covered with wooden laths. Will it work? What's the best mix consistency? Is it easier or more difficult thank hemp plastering stone walls? Let's find out.

    As a woman in living in London working a corporate job, I really look up to you both, but Kylie has a special place in my heart. She really inspires me to do more. She is the embodiment of a strong successful woman. I love the way she thinks and plans, and I love how she can be thoughtful and gentle as she does things too. It's amazing the life you have built yourselves and how you inspire others to work hard and pursue their dreams. As a native Portuguese you make me homesick, I would love to be back as the way of life is a thing of dreams, however there is no economic pull. London has allowed me to have a successful career and there is no way I would have been able to have anything close to this back home. But I want to say thank you, thank you for investing and giving back to my country. Also thank you for cheering up my Saturday mornings, I love these videos so much! Wishing you all the best. Also please tell Kylie I find her accent endearing. It's an odd mix of Australian? and southern English? I don't know, but it has a lovely twang. Take care!

      Thankyou for those kind words 😊
      We are very fortunate… we used our successful London based careers to enable us to move here and establish this life. We can’t emphasis enough how welcoming the Portuguese people (and government for allowing us) have been, it’s truly phenomenal.
      So if you wanted to return, we are evidence that it can be done … with some hard work and planning (took us about 10 years to get everything in place).
      My accent is a mix of Australian and British, having spent 20+ years in each (being born and raised in Aus then moving to the UK)

A word of warning, Gaffer's tape reacts to plastics and rubber after a few weeks. It gets all gummy, sticky, and really difficult to clean up. That's why we don't use it for cables on long term projects.

    The spaces in the laths were to allow the plaster to hook over the lath so it was really important to push up when applying. Those “hooks” then held the weight of the plaster firmly to the wall. You probably saw that squished through and folded over slightly in the old plaster you removed? Your laths are soooo neat (Kirsty?). Love your channel and until the crochet episode I was slightly worried about what Kristy would do with herself when the Reno is finished

    • @MAKEDOGROW
      @MAKEDOGROW  Год назад +1

    The wood strips and plaster bring back memories of my grandparents ' house in Indiana. I was raised by them on their tree nursery/farm. My grandfather remodeled the house in 1968, he promised my grandmother he would do this but she died in 1964. One of his sons was a contractor and family pitched in to help. I remember smells of drywall, plaster and smoking pipe tobacco each day. When they tore out the plaster walls they found historical items left in them. It was cool to see. Maybe you should put a time capsule in one of your walls.

    You can search for anti fog glasses, and N95 masks with a filter. Or a respirator with a pancake multi cartridge filter. They are flat can be pink in colour filters that work for dust, vapors, aerosols, fumes, particulates etc… There are also ocular goggle type glasses with foam rims that have air vents. You can also look into face shields. Best of luck to you, PPE is tres importante! Always protect your vision, hearing, lungs, appendages, and wear proper foot wear. Glad to see you wearing it.

    • @MAKEDOGROW

      Yep, we’ve tried multiple ‘anti-fog’ glasses, but still haven’t found any that actually work.
      We already have the serious type of respirators with the hard triangular type filters, but can’t find anything that’s good for just woodworking. I’ve seen the pink type ones on YT but can’t seem to find any here. Might have to look further afield.
      Our steel caps are probably our best, and most effective PPE purchase 😀

      This is one of the few walls that isn’t stone … and we don’t really want to use hydraulic on our stone walls. We’re hoping we might get to do some proper hempcrete, rather than hemp plaster, in the future (to add to a very thin brick wall) and then it would definitely be better to add some hydraulic.
      We’ve not had a lot of luck sourcing hemp related products here, no-one seems willing to deliver to us (we’re right in the middle of the interior which is too far from many of the bigger cities)

    Lovely finish. I adore the curved edges, too!!! I am always listening at the end for Kylie's "Bye!"...wouldn't be the same without her steadfast, cheerful goodbye. Good luck on the sanding.

    There's more benefits using hemp lime plastering compared to dry wall'in;
    - Texture; The walls are "organic" (as someone said), does not - depending on personal taste - require filler and sanding and additional wallpaper or paint.
    - Acoustics; The surface irregularities gives a less "echoing" area wihtout need to add additional textures.
    The latter might be a benefit in a toilet - sorry....
