The biggest downside with porting graphically advanced racers is how much worse they look than what they would have needed to. Baked simplified shadows, good looking 2D vegetation models, etc. is far better than just forcing muddy LOD objects up close to the camera and terrible shadow resolutions. I mean, look at a game like Dirt 3. It runs great even on a toaster, and although the sacrifices are quite big with low settings, (like the car shadow being static) the game still looks really attractive. There's one thing of porting games directly, or having a art team helping out adapting the fx & assets (not just downgrading). To be honest, I think companies should open the door for the community to supply improved simplified assets for their games.
Switch games really need their own asset pipeline and a dedicated team with the resources and willingness to make changes for that particular versions benefit. Unfortunately that is more costly than taking an existing build and hacking and chopping and crushing it until it barely fits. Visual clarity and smooth performance are more important on a 5-6" screen than unnecessarily complex models and shaders that need to be butchered anyway.
@@barlosxantana Just purchased it off steam for about $8...it’s not too demanding My laptop can run all settings high at 1080P with 60 FPS. And it works great with my thrust master t-80. Like grid it would work well but I think it would be 30 FPS since ps4 runs at 60.

For all those looking for controllers with analog triggers to play this type of racing games I've discovered that 8bitdo via their software allows to swap the right stick and trigger buttons. I saved that setting on the second profile on the controller. Using the first profile on the controller I set the right analog stick to accelerator and brake on the game controls menu. Once all the controls are set they way you like load the second profile on the controller and you have analog triggers for accelerator and brake. I know the 8bitdo pro 2 and ultimate controllers allow for this software mapping option. Happy driving!
I was checking out your club earlier today. Got my way through the first race as well, sadly no one else really on there! Couldn’t agree more with your review and that career mode, love the detail they went for!
I normally use wheel and pedals on Switch, but I did have a go at the procon controls for WRC8. Only being able to go full throttle is something of a disaster~
Man as far as switch ports go this one I found was really good! Not having analog triggers made it hard to control the throttle. I ended up changing the throttle and braking to the right stick (up for acceleration and down for braking) then I change me the zr and zl buttons to shift up and down gears and found that way better. That way you can better control the throttle and braking power to the car and I found it a lot easier to control👍🏻
I can't wait to revisit games like this to see what the eventual switch pro does to it. Between this game and Apex, I've seen two games already this week that could really benefit even from just 10-20% more power. The developer clearly did a good job, but the pop in would annoy me.
Great review! I started becoming a fan of rally racing games for some years now, and Rush Rally 3 & Origins are my faves for the Switch. I’ve been keeping an eye on this one in my wishlist and right now it’s on sale. I think I’m going to get it just as soon as I clear up some space on my Switch.
Never had a wrc game as bought all the colin McRae /dirt games but think pick this one up looks good at good price for physical as these usually expensive on release. Nice see something like this on nintendo as wii lacked racing games
I don't think that's the problem; plenty of switch games look really good, and much better than this does (botw, odyssey, immortals, doom eternal). Looks to me like it's just bad optimisation
True guys, but lets be honest... the framerate, popups and low res graphics in many games on the Switch is really noticeable. I do love my console, but sometimes my eyes hurt when I play games. For example, I cannot play Bravely Default 2 because the graphics make my eyes sore :/ I would gladly welcome a Switch PRO or a Switch 2
Horizon Chase Turbo is really good. I would love for Need For Speed Nitro to come from the Wii. It was a fun arcade racing game meets Tony Hawk's Tagging mode
With games like these, Nintendo’s dumb obsession with gimmicks absolutely infuriates me. “Hey, Those analog triggers, you know the ones that have been an essential component in gaming for 3 generations.. yeah f*ck those. Let’s add pointless infra red sensors instead!” No wonder the racing genre on Nintendo’s systems has always been so damn barren.
It's because of legal reasons. They legally can't use analogue triggers unless they pay for the license. They clearly chose not to as let's be honest, 95% of switch games just don't use them. That's why the last analogue controllers were the Wii Classic controllers.
In Rush Rally 3 I created an RC car style control setup with acceleration/brake on the left stick, steering on the right and gear shift on the triggers (also similar to Halo vehicle controls). More games need to let you do this.
Definitely seems like a solid-built racing game but I prefer less realistic racers or those more focused on multiplayer. Still, great review. Details, humor, and footage score a 19/20. Cheers.
To be honest, a more fitting port for the switch would be a mobile game like CarX rally. The switch could handle the graphic fidelity much better, and the mobile controls could transfer well. Rally simulation games are not meant for a portable console that is focused on fun, simple experiences.
At the end of the day I think I will wait until it's on sale. Do not spend more than 15 euros, as I mentioned I bought wrc8 for 15 euros and I regret it, I have no problem spending even 60 but as long as it deserves it.
Cartridge edition is not being released until the end of March, or April 8th. Could just purchase the deluxe version, which comes with some extra DLC, from the eShop instead. Although I prefer to have cartridge edition of most of my Switch games, in order to save space on the microsd card.
Having just played 8, 9, 10 and Generations, 8 is by a very wide margin the best. If there were a way to get the newer cars and stages to 8, it would stand alone. Incredibly, I thought Generations - the newest one - was by far the worst. You would think they would work OUT the bugs going forward in a series but instead, they just added MORE bugs along the way.
I own WRC 8 and 9 on switch and WRC 4 on psvita ......I play the Ps Vita wrc4 version all the time , I just find that wrc on switch is a half arsed port with no thought given to the very sensitive switch "Analogue" sticks (The devs seriously just defaulted -10 sensitivity to steering that's it )......whereas the VITA version is so much smoother and easier to control without coming off every bloody turn!!!!
Sounds like a legit racing game. You were listing all the modes and what career entailed and I went 'whoa' Not much of a racer, myself. Usually just the occasional split screen local race for me
Great detailed review. As a kid I loved racing simulations (F1, Nascar, DMX, Rallye) on my Xbox with steering wheel and pedals. That was fun. This game looks okay but once again the hardware shortcomings of the Switch shine through unfortunately. We really need a 4K capable Switch Pro.
Thank you for reviewing this, I would love to see a racing game reviews roundup. Edit: Is it possible to map the accelerator to the right thumb stick like you can in grid?
After wrc 8 and the half arsed port with options that didn't work on switch, steering set to lowest sensitivity by default to try and make playable and my go the horrible handling etc , I hope they have actually dedicated some time to this port
The frame rate bar was not a constant 30 fps or it would have been a flat line. It was hitting 31 fps a lot and that is noticeable when playing just as much as drops below 30.
I absolutely love wrx8 i really wish they would do dlc download stages as i want to do rally Africa but not buying a new game just for that. The analog triger is easy to get used to.
I am a huge racing-game fan but I am not gonna purchase more racing games for Switch as they are basically a giant let-down for me every time. And most likely it is not even the fault of the game-producers but just Switch being what it is. Yes, I do care about the graphics. Yes, it bothers me when objects just "appear" or re-render when I am close enough. Yes, I am bothered by static shadows or pixelated shadows. Yes, I am bothered by no-antialiasing and by frame drops. The only game that I am kind of satisfied with is Grid, all the others that I own... not so much (GC:U, GC:U2, NFS:HS, WRC8, GP Moto, ..). And the thing that drives me nuts - no analog trigger on the joycons (or on the pro controller...). This console was simply not made for racing fans.
They actually CAN’T do analog triggers for legal reasons. Last system to have it is the Wii Classic Controller, and that’s it. On top of that, from my experience only one or two types of games really benefit from that, the rest lose a bit of playability as depending on how the active zone is set on the game, it’s very hit or miss. It was like this on the GC as well, and it’s one reason that outside of games that was made around it, it only proved to be a detriment. Particularly with something like Capcom Vs. SNK 2. Typically end up buying third party controllers to get around the analog triggers anyway.
How are you guys able to play this game on Switch? Mine is just uncontrollable, is way too sensitive and I've tried changing settings and nothing works. Help, please!
On sale for $4. I loved 10 and gen so I took a chance. Holy cow this is atrocious. Low res, horrid graphics, long load times, and sub 30fps. This should not exist. If the next switch doesn't have analog triggers I will never buy another racing game on a Nintendo system. It's borderline unplayable as is. It's great on Series X and PC, horrid on switch. Stay FAR away.
Some of that will just be the video but it definitely has some graphical issues. The framerate is consistent (albeit at 30, not 60) and the resolution fluctuates to be fair. Glen
I might be late to the party, but the game performance is shocking on this port. They are wildly inconsistent and it is hard to put up with. It's both disorienting as it's constantly changing, and makes it difficult to judge stages properly. I changed my output to 420p and got a slight improvement but nothing to shout about. I loved this game on my Xbox one(RIP) and going from that version to this is a major disappointment. I could deal with less graphical detail for STEADY frame rate. I love my switch, but any games not made by Nintendo always perform like a lead balloon.
My favorite racing game is Wreckfest, it is so fun! Playing on Xbox though. About the video... The picture looks very stuttery. Have you changed something with your capture/exporting? I have noticed this on other recent videos too. If its native game, then it looks borderline unplayable. Have you thought of uploading 1080p/60 to youtube?
It's definitely not the game and the video was rendered at 60fps. I recently upgraded my capture card so shouldn't be any issues there. Not really sure. I will mention in the top pinned comment that the stutters aren't the game though, just to make it clear. Thanks. Glen
Man I really don't like that pop in/out issue. I have GOOD eyesight and that right there seems very distracting. Edit: to elaborate I like 2D-shmups and fast twitch arcade games... If I see something suddenly pop up, even if it's static background, I will likely react to it out of habit. Is it a big issue or do you get used to it? Is it only "fake" trees or do objects you're actually able to hit also pop in and out?
Why the hell wouldn't they fix the popping-in shadows issue... They totally disregarded their previous products (V-Rally 4 and WRC 8) and they don't even bother about the tickets from the users. But man, this is a new product. They should at least give you a possibility to change the graphics (at least... quality mode vs performance mode). Those popping in shadows are the worst in V-Rally 4, making the game almost unplayable in certain stages. How's that that Rush Rally 3 managed to port their game onto the Switch without graphics issues? Is it really necessary for the shadows to pop in as you're driving? Can't anything be done to resolve this? Really? How's that that Mario Odyssey and Zelda BotW introduce far better graphics and frames per second due to a perfect optimisation and yet, those idiots from Kylotonn are totally unable to optimise their own game for a certain platform? Really???
@@Darknight0681 oh, most developers are looking for the quickest and easiest port job, OH, I HAD NO IDEA. That changes my mind completely! That way it's totally fine they've done shitty job. Yeah. Does this version have the game killing bug that wrc 8 has where after a race it would try to upload your race result to the global leader board but generated an error because it could never upload.
I didn't experience any errors like that. It did say that it couldn't upload my times one day but my internet was messing around on that day anyway so I put it down to that. Didn't cause the game to crash or anything though. Glen

The frame rate bar was not a constant 30 fps or it would have been a flat line. It was hitting 31 fps a lot and that is noticeable when playing just as much as drops below 30.
I didn't say constant - I said consistent.
@@SwitchUpYt I see, that is a distinct difference.
Is this game better than Gear Club Unlimited 2?
Nitendo switch WRC9 in game couldn't change the general settings like force and effect. Is there any change i have to do?
I wanted a nicer racer but this looks real rough. Shame because I love wrc games
Right this is so rough compared to Xbox
I absolutely love wrx8 i really wish they would do dlc download stages as i want to do rally Africa but not buying a new game just for that. The analog triger is easy to get used to.
I think i'll wait for a sale on this one as i have other Racing Games to play right now.
The most important question is did they fix the bugs in career mode that were in wrc 8
You're breaking the car Samir!
The perpetual frame rate hiccups are disturbing
I'll stick of rush rally 3 for a while.
I really enjoyed V rally the handling is far more switch friendly than WRC 8 , don't know if wrc 9 is more of the same ?
How are you guys able to play this game on Switch? Mine is just uncontrollable, is way too sensitive and I've tried changing settings and nothing works. Help, please!
I just pick this up for 13.65 usd on sale the steering is a pain but i drop my sensitivity to -10 and its alittle more manageable
Yea I have read in other comments people dropping it down even more for better handling
@@sebastianhelon2508 Im coming off dirt wrc 9 is first non arcade race i bought
I’m buying this game for just $3.99 in January 2023 so value would be perhaps 19/20 lol
I’d buy the game simply for the fact that the featured car this year is awfully similar to the Yaris 2020 I drive
All in all, game looks great
Your car sucks.
It seems like a strategy racing game
I am quiet surprised how well this plays on the Switch. The controls are a little twitchy but what can you do?
Question? Can we use the Right Stick for analog Gas and Brake?
I believe so.
You mean the old school racing controls from Gran turismo?
I want to know if this game have visual damage on veichles. All rally games on Switch don't have a visual damage on the cars.
I can't control the cars lol. I'm glad I only wasted $4
My eyes 👀 That resolution and frame rate
Some of that will just be the video but it definitely has some graphical issues. The framerate is consistent (albeit at 30, not 60) and the resolution fluctuates to be fair. Glen
@@SwitchUpYt might be the video but the frame rate to me seems up and down and below 30
@@iparz44z Yea I was surprised at that Glen? My experience has been absolutely rock solid and smooth, but definitely some drops in the vid?
Yeah, not sure what's happened there. I've put a note in the top pinned comment to clarify it's not the game. Glen
I'm fairly new to the Switch, just ordered one myself. Is this possible to play on the Switch Lite too?
Yep
@@SwitchUpYt thank you so much!
is there still no visual damage ? like in wrc 8 ?
I might be late to the party, but the game performance is shocking on this port. They are wildly inconsistent and it is hard to put up with. It's both disorienting as it's constantly changing, and makes it difficult to judge stages properly. I changed my output to 420p and got a slight improvement but nothing to shout about. I loved this game on my Xbox one(RIP) and going from that version to this is a major disappointment. I could deal with less graphical detail for STEADY frame rate. I love my switch, but any games not made by Nintendo always perform like a lead balloon.
Can we get some of the new NFS games? Or underground series on switch!! New self titled or heat would be good
WRC 9 its looking good
I will buy buy it on seal
🤘
My favorite racing game is Wreckfest, it is so fun! Playing on Xbox though.
About the video... The picture looks very stuttery. Have you changed something with your capture/exporting? I have noticed this on other recent videos too. If its native game, then it looks borderline unplayable. Have you thought of uploading 1080p/60 to youtube?
It's definitely not the game and the video was rendered at 60fps. I recently upgraded my capture card so shouldn't be any issues there. Not really sure. I will mention in the top pinned comment that the stutters aren't the game though, just to make it clear. Thanks. Glen
@@SwitchUpYt Have a nice day, Glen! Greetings from snowy Latvia!
Thank you my friend, you too.
Really???
It’s made for multiple platforms, and most developers are looking for the quickest, easiest port job they can do.
@@Darknight0681 oh, most developers are looking for the quickest and easiest port job, OH, I HAD NO IDEA. That changes my mind completely! That way it's totally fine they've done shitty job. Yeah. That actually opened my eyes. Now it's okay to have shitty products, shitty cars, shitty phones, shitty roads, because simply they're all looking to make those in the easiest and quickest way. Man, how could I have not understood that previously!
Glen
finally a good rally game on switch? incredible😄
Nintendo needs to just make an f zero and thier own rally race game
I play grid, with no assistances and manual gears. It cost me 3.50$cad.
Wish I had a steering wheel though.
I’m looking for a good car racing game on the Switch, sadly I wasn’t feel this one. Anyone have any suggestions for a good* racing game on the Switch?
Grid Autosport is probably one of the best ports on Switch right now. Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered and Burnout Paradise are also available.
@@MarcosViniciusmvinip thanks I’ll check them out! Though I have a huge backlog to clear so it’ll be a while before I get to it haha
TT Isle of Man 2!
4:22 I have Splitscreen tho
DON’T BUY THIS FOR THE SWITCH. The frame drops so badly that you can’t race. Its TERRIBLE. The game is demanding as it is AND IT MAKES IT WORSE WITH THE STUTTER AND FRAME DROP
So it wasn't my imagination! 2 of the 3 stages in Germany run smoothly but the 1st stage is horrific.
"WRC 8 vs WRC 9 on Nintendo Switch Comparison with Frame Rate Test" -> ruclips.net/video/A88ECIyJOJI/видео.html
(This video is quite good if anyone wants to compare them side by side! It complements your review perfectly 😊)
i think the graphics are too underwhelming, given that their focus was releasing this game to as many platforms as possible, they didn't have time to polish the switch version :/
Does this run better or worse than wrc 8?
Good review think I may go an purchase carnt miss out on some switch rallying.
Looks good but the content looks very similar to WRC8. Thanks
Waths the name? Glen Boya? Voya? Village?
All I can think now when I see games with frame rates like this is... where the hell is the “New” Switch?
@@Baddy187 I know man! They’re trying to squeeze profits to the nth degree, and they’re going to continue to do it even with a new one I think. They’d probably just find a way to overclock it or something (instead of changing to a smaller die). An improvement is an improvement though, and I’d love to see it.
Just got this game for $19.99 on the eshop sale
Nice!
Does wrc 9 has local multiplayer?
So, hello guys, I am always checking your videos before buying any switch game and almost all the times I agree with you. But with wrc8 I was disappointed. The game in handheld was terrible and the graphics were worse than v rally
Hi. Yeah, in terms of handheld mode, it does take another hit this time as you would expect but I didn't feel it affected the gameplay. The graphics are better here than in 8 but still with problems, the pop-in in particular is very noticeable. Glen
@@SwitchUpYt thanks glen
