Don't worry everyone Toyota is working on the next gen ISF with a twin turbo v6 from the new tundra. Their M4 fighter isn't ready yet but it's being tested at Shimoyama.
Yeah, sadly these guys fall a little into the usual car reviewer mindset of "if it doesn't have rock hard suspension that destroys you, a transmission that pounds you like a heavyweight boxer on every upshift, and can't pull 1.5 lateral G's on a track, it's not a "good car" here. In reality this is exactly what you want to go for a drive in on a quiet country road on Sunday morning, or take a road trip in. This kind of "has to set Nuremberg records or it's shit!" mindset you see in so many reviews of performance sedans has ruined the class in the last 10 years, making manufacturers like Audi and BMW and even Mercedes churn out cars that are just not nice to drive when you aren't going hard out.
@@Beer_Dad1975 The biggest problem with this IS500 is that it’s a parts bin car. No R&D we’re put in along with no upgrades. That’s why it’s not called an ISF. It’s a cool car that has that old car feel, which makes it cool, but not 65k cool. The biggest problem is people that are changing brands from German to this. The transmission feels like it belongs in a 4 cylinder Hyundai. Maybe worst. It’s very noticeable of how laggy it is. It’s a weak link in the chain. What good is the powerful engine if it can only put out 70 percent of its power. Trans is a power robber. If it was a 40k car, that would be one thing. It’s 65k so there’s no excuse why Lexus skimped out in new tech with all the great transmissions out these days. It’s handicapped by it. I don’t see the resale being that good. It’s just an IS350 with a V8 in it. Only a Lexus diehard would buy it.
@Just think It’s only a V8 put in an IS350. It’s not an ISF so it’s resale won’t hold 80 percent in five years unless you just buy it and don’t drive it. Lexus just needed to get rid of V8’s and increase sales. This was their perfect solution. A parts bin car. Lexus is making way for the V6 turbo hybrid for the real ISF with more power and a great transmission. All the R&D will go into that. In a few years, the IS500 will be forgotten about. Unless you have a cult that overhypes the car. I was hoping to love it, but came away disappointed.
@@ryanb8736 I guess Toyota are mated to AW, so don't have the option to buy transmissions from ZF like BMW and Audi do - much like Mercedes they kind of have to use in-house transmissions and make do with whatever the state of play is. 2001-2005, the Lexus IS had a 2JZ-GE. They could have made an IS-F with a 2JZ-GTE. It wouldn't have taken much, if any, additional engineering. I'm still salty that never happened.
Having the GTE motor in it would have been cool but it would have been in an awkward spot where it would be in BMW M3 territory with worse handling and looks or it would have been too expensive for JDM enthusiasts who would buy a Mitsubishi Evo, Impreza STi or a used Supra Turbo instead if they wanted a GTE car. Not to mention, they'd have to completely re-engineer the the chassis to handle the extra torque and weight on the front end as well. They probably thought about it and gave up to put that RnD money into the next gen vehicles and the LFA.
I’ve been hearing the 8A is actually not the same unit as the one from the ISF & RCF, and is actually the toned down 8A used in other Toyota/Lexus cars. Not sure if that’s accurate but regardless I just wish Toyota would use the 10A or a ZF8/9.
Do these guys know that outside Of the race track lexus has Built lexus has entered their actual vehicles in a number of racing events and endurance races ? And has been doing this for years….
Of course we know this. But, it is only in the last year or so that Lexus decided to give their customer cars some sort of driver’s car personality. They are at the beginning of that effort, by their own admission. There have been plenty of car makers with successful race cars that don’t drive like their street cars - having a race car doesn’t guarantee a fun to drive street car product. Thanks for watching!

I think half the E90 M3 lovers may jump in the IS500 and jump out and jump around for joy. But the other half will drive it 100 feet and leave with a frown. There's something electrifying about a BMW M car, especially with ITB's and a DCT or manual. Its a car that tells you from the first few feet it means business. Its a car that, as soon as you wake it up, goes "you better mean business because I'm not pulling any punches". It's a car that turns people who don't like cars away, that insists its drivers be certain types of people. The lexus is a car that is equally happy being ripped around a track as it does shuttling grandma to the grocery store.
I guess if we are comparing new cars to new cars, nothing is like how M cars used to be. Nobody is so bold as to design a car to make average drivers say "too loud, too jerky, too difficult to drive" anymore.
Disagree completely. I have driven an E90 M3 extensively as I had it for a while. It was great for its time and preferred it over the ISF version of the V8. The 2nd gen high-revving 2UR is a different beast made for the RCF originally. S65 is not nearly impressive as this new high-revving version of Lexus 2UR V8. It pulls so much harder, responds just as quickly and revs as freely. It was co-developed with Yamaha and a much modern interpretation of the similar concept. Yeah, it revs to 7400 rpm and does not rev to 8000+ rpm, but it has 100 ft-lbs of torque more available at 4000 rpm. It has much more lofty compression and direct injection to boost performance. The Lexus 2UR makes power everywhere right to redline and is a lot more powerful than the S65. S65 was fun if you were over 6500 rpm, but it was a torqueless wonder. Hated the car below 6500 rpm as it was lethargic and had no power at all.
@@thirdpedalnirvana I owned a 2007 M4 and that car was joy to drive, but then the problems started like a pouring rain from electrical, cooling system, and engine oil leak. This new IS500 gives me hope, I will test drive one and then decide between the IS500 or 2022 M4.

The main value proposition is two things: The V8 engine and the Lexus Reliability. If you want to hear great sounds and an engine with character, not an engine that caved to environmental regulations, and also a car that will last 15, 20 years, then this is it.
Do you guys miss the extra 1000 RPM from the e90 M3 that’s missing from the Lexus? Seriously stumped whether I should keep looking for an ultra clean m3.
The e90 M3 is excellent. And the V8 is special. But that extra RPM is also needed in the M3 bc it makes real power so late. The Lexus V8 is closer to an American V8 that has easy torque much lower. We hope that helps.
They could have put a better interior in here and a manual transmission and this car would be a home run! How do you offer a $60k Lexus without leather interior, a sluggish transmission, an old infotainment system and a CD player? A lot of missed opportunities here for Lexus to have really made a great car, unfortunately.
It's only fitting that this is an F sport and not a full F it shows the trickle down effect that Lexus IS doing and also tells us that the next F car is going to be a world beater again.
Yeah. I've had mine for about 4 months now. It's pleasant to drive around in - smooth and relatively quiet - but it can become a beast on a back road. If you’re looking for a grand touring car and not a sports sedans then yes!! I was hoping for a sports sedan not a V8 caddy
It is funny how it has so many flaws, but in the end, the overall package is something you can't get anywhere else these days. So, those flaws hardly matter. If you want this car, you need not cross-shop it with anything.
Built like a tank!
RE: the hood bulge. Even if the V8 would fit without the bulge, aren't there hood clearance regulations for pedestrian safety? If the V8 is any taller than the V6 they need the bulge.
Actually sounds like a delightful combination... A sharp looking, boulevard bruiser with a wonderful N/A V8 roar...
Don't worry everyone Toyota is working on the next gen ISF with a twin turbo v6 from the new tundra. Their M4 fighter isn't ready yet but it's being tested at Shimoyama.
I have seen the is 350 in person, gorgeous
I actually like that it’s a comfortable cruiser with a phenomenal V8 soundtrack. Such a shame their not coming to the uk
Hopefully Aisen will catch up on transmission technology with the next generation - they did pioneer the 8 speed automatic so they are very capable. Could be worse, could be Jatco trash!
Come to canada 🇨🇦
And 20 years from now we'll all be gushing about this legend and clamoring to buy one. I about image some polyurethane in the right places and upgraded shocks and sway bars will improve to the handling sharpness. Long live the Lexus V8.
Meanwhile, in my country, we are stuck with the 200t, not even the V6.
The United States is calling!!! Get your Visa and get on over here. The roads are wide open.
@@greggraham2642 Wish I got that financial freedom. Maybe will just wait for Lexus Japan to sanction the IS 500 or ISF in the Asia region which is highly unlikely, with the looming carbon emission regulations.

This car was meant to compete against a c43 or m340i not an m3. When you look at it through that POV it’s perfect
Yea I thought the comparison to the gulia quad was a little unfair
@@Lionsheartification as someone who used to be a salesperson for Alfa Romeo I completely agree
Everyone want a full F, a M3 fighter, DCT, and more, but then you'd be looking at a $70k+ (USD) car vs a $57k+ car.
I love the way this car sounds, worth all the trips to Mobil. However you can see from outside the car that it has a floaty suspension. If they tighten the dynamics, I'm in.
It might depend what mode it’s in. Nonetheless, they did say it’s a highway cruiser so this makes it amazing.
This is the sensible performance we need.
Nobody felt this way 10 years ago why now?
Honest review, was hoping for more positive comments regarding the handling attributes.
Imagine all the manufacturers is bringing back one of their classic good cars back to the market with fresh warranty and peoples don’t have to paying high used car prices! It’s a win win for all of us !
I think the reviews made a great point that the IS500 is a modern day version of the E90 M3. Which probably makes it a future classic.
The E90 M3 were more high sprung. This IS is more of a gentlemen’s sport sedan.
Now peoples don’t have to buy high price used E90 M3 plus with warranty.
@@mingq318 yep. If my kids were still young, I would get the IS500. But my kids are older now, I have my eyes on a slightly used LC500 instead.
@@jml9550 yes, lc500 is one of best car right now.
@@mingq318 yep. Not ready to go full electric yet. Never going back to BMW, Mercedes or Audi again. The only reliable GT out there in the market is the LC. Maybe a Porsche 911 when retired.
Amazing car! V8 with rear wheel drive and 4 doors and a sunroof! A1!
@@TestDriveVideos that is very true! Lexus numbs down their street cars.... the only car that was exciting was their LC500 for the masses, sure we had the LFA but that was overpriced for the time, and now its a cult classic the LFA is
You can't go to GS anymore, it's discontinued unfortunately.
Bet u when Im driving out in my m3 you better mean business coz I need that money for the potential brakedown when return😅
@@KLRGT500KR did you buy an is500? I am considering ditching my e93 m3 for this? From the couple dyno charts I’ve seen, the powerband looks far more useable than the s65.
Are you so easily confused by 3 levels of performance branding? Let me break it down for you.
Three is the number of levels of performance in the Lexus IS series. The number of performance levels in the Lexus IS series shall be three. Three, which is the number after two, and the number before four, is the exact number of levels of performance branding in that of the Lexus IS series of automobiles. The number of levels of performance branding for the Lexus IS shall be three, it shall not be four, which is the number after three, nor shall it be two, which is the number before three, and it is definitely not one, which even idiots won't confused with three.
Five... is right out!
I think either of you would take your $67,000, put $20k into an E46 M3, and then put the rest in the bank for repairs whenever it needs it
Exactly. I would take Lexus’s reliability any day of the week. Been there done that with BMWs, frequent trips to the dealership shops gets old.
Coming from a 335is, gosh I loved that thing but I don’t miss the 4K repair bills. Maybe I’m just getting old but Lexus is speaking to me

The lexus driving experience has always been. I am driving to not wake up my wife or the kids in back and my car can do that..
Reminds of GS 400-430-460 models, wasn't an F model just the V8 option.
Sport tuned suspension, full Brembo brakes all the way around, chassis rigidity, interior sports upgrades (bolsters). New F models get oil coolers and trans coolers. So no not just a v8….
Spot-on... the IS500 will sell and sell well
What if we want to track it? We have a CT4 Blackwing and want grab this refined V8. Seems like we have to do a lot of mods to track it.
This would be a great daily, but would definitely require work to be a satisfying track car. The CT4 in better that out of the box. Thanks for watching!

@@layne4376 oh really, how so?
This car is all engine and nothing else. I like the hood, I’ll give it that. But that’s about it.
since this video, the IS500 will be available in Japan as well other than North America. I don't know if Lexus' F plan is still going or not or if they are going 100% EV but the next F model was supposed to be twin turbo V8, but they ran into issues w/ the twin turbo V8 engine
The main value proposition is two things: The V8 engine and the Lexus Reliability. If you want to hear great sounds and an engine with character, not an engine that caved to environmental regulations, and also a car that will last 15, 20 years, then this is it.
I wish i could afford this beauty. For now ill enjoy the v8 on my sc430

I believe it's a Tudor Black Bay GMT.
Hey Todd, was the fly in the camera near the end triggering any OCD in your editor's eye?
If it drive better than it does, don’t you think they would have called it the IS-F?
With that drive train... I should be able to put up with that front end. (If I could afford the thing).
I like that it is rear wheel drive
You all mentioned all the reasons I would get this car. Wait it's only one. V8 engine. (:
And bullet proof reliability. No?
Do you guys miss the extra 1000 RPM from the e90 M3 that’s missing from the Lexus? Seriously stumped whether I should keep looking for an ultra clean m3.
The e90 M3 is excellent. And the V8 is special. But that extra RPM is also needed in the M3 bc it makes real power so late. The Lexus V8 is closer to an American V8 that has easy torque much lower. We hope that helps.
100 more lb/ft in the IS500 too…
They could have put a better interior in here and a manual transmission and this car would be a home run! How do you offer a $60k Lexus without leather interior, a sluggish transmission, an old infotainment system and a CD player? A lot of missed opportunities here for Lexus to have really made a great car, unfortunately.
Didn’t realize you guys are in UT. Does it feel like it loses much power at 4500 ft?
Sound is awesome.. only north american cars get 75 percent of a performance upgrade. It just seems we get almost stuff from so many places.
Please do a review of the 2023 M340i xdrive
Have you driven the GSF? What do you guys think?
I want one own a lexus IS250 cannot even wait to own one man the torque must be insane
Great overview, thank you. Amazing that this car will run at 100% ten years from now whereas the German cars will be voluminous money pits🎉.
It's only fitting that this is an F sport and not a full F it shows the trickle down effect that Lexus IS doing and also tells us that the next F car is going to be a world beater again.
So in summary, it’s a Grand Tourer?
Yeah. I've had mine for about 4 months now. It's pleasant to drive around in - smooth and relatively quiet - but it can become a beast on a back road. It isn't super sporty feeling in the turns, but it's just good enough to where I feel confident throwing it around. So yes, it's a cruiser, but a fun one.
I’ve driven the lc500 in their driving school at laguna seca and sounds amazing. Now the question for you guys is how does this engine compare to the Quattroporte? I’ve been planning to get into the Quattroporte in the future but maybe this is500 is a better long term ownership plan
We expect the Lexus to be cheaper to maintain in the long run (depends on how long we are talking). The Maserati feels more exotic, but doesn't drive better than this IS 500. Now the Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio? - both guys would pick that over this Lexus. Depends on what you like and how long you'll own it. Thanks for watching!
@@TestDriveVideos I am more interested in the NA v8 experience of a luxury 4 door sedan than a more complicated v6 turbo. Have you guys any experience on the Jaguar v8s naturally aspirated or supercharged? Heard they are quite agile and handles well for a large sedan
@@tnutss Do not get into a Jaguar V8 unless you like how your car looks on a lift.
My cousin had a Ghibli SQ4. Bought it at $90K new and 4 years 50k miles later sold it at $40K. Maintenance cost were high. I would imagine the QP will be even higher to maintain.
If you plan to own it for 4-5 years, Maserati or Alfa Romeo is the way to go if you can afford to take the financial hit. If not, stick with Lexus. I plan to get a slight used 19-20 LC500 once the crazy car price settle down. I don’t need it now, it is a toy.
Why this v8 wasn’t offered in the LS500 is beyond me
Since the is500 isn't a full F car like the IS-F, does that mean the original IS-F is a better car? (Creature comforts aside)
Needs a lot more steering feel!
need some vented fenders and hood vents
You want this to be an ISF but it isn't. It's not trying to be. That's why it's called IS500.
I like this car a lot, and I’m usually not a huge fan of Lexus
This review is not aimed at the 90% of people who will be leasing the car as new paid for by their company as an executive benefit. It is to be watched 3 years from posting when these off lease cars are available for purchase at the price of a new base engine Camry/Accord.
Except Lexuses, and performance Lexuses in particular, have incredible residuals.
You'll never see these go down to that price... unless it's salvaged out of a hurricane.

Does this have AUTO LANE KEEP DRiving ????
... Yes.
All these nice things people have to say about this car why wasn’t everyone this happy when Lexus released the ISF 10 years ago? The ISF is actually still superior to this car.
As someone who owns this car. Its badass. I’ve had everything from front wheel drive civic si with 350 hp to Super sport Cameros. From q50s to Porsche. This car is bad a. Anyone who talks down wants one.
Instead of being happy that Lexus threw this Amazing engine in a car in 2022. These guys are trying to find every reason to be negative and show how this lacks to a 2022 BMW m3. common guys. Most people buy these cars for the badge not the performance
We guess you missed the sections where Todd (red shirt) talks about who this car is perfect for and the reasons it's great, especially because of the engine, reliability, and more? Thanks for watching anyway.
It’s a shame Lexus didn’t do more than this. It’s just a parts bin car for them to get rid of parts while increasing sales.
this is basically the same car as is350 with an v8. more power, better sound, but less agile, also more expensive.
Better using paddle shift...while driving to the extreme....the transmission is 👍
It's funny how the parallel here is the e92 m3. Only its everything we wanted the M3 to be. Not a bmw product and reliable.... Eyes supra.
even if I could ( the IS500 wont be availlable in the UK) I wouldn't swap my 2011 ISF for this.....
Lexus North America specifically requested Lexus make FOR THEM (us) an IS w/ the 5 liter. Its why the car doesn't make sense. Its why its not a true F. It doesn't compute because it was requested.
This goes to show that people will complain about any and everything. Lexus gives you the isf engine and transmission back but my man says he wishes it didn't drive like a Lexus. Get coilovers then. Problem solved. You better get one new and keep it in the garage when all these EVs start closing the place
