😮 Can I give you my Honda Pilot and you give a look see? I don't need an alignment though 😅.
Thanks to Scotty, tire sales are through the roof!
Thanks for sharing the truth
How much did the tire manufactures pay you to say this. Ive done almost 10k alignments and you are wrong. Ive seen plenty of cars that drive straight but they keep eating tires. You should have your alignment checked every 6 months. We charge 50 bucks by the way.
@theguyoucallwhen... I had this happen to me. Sometimes it wears all the way on the inside of the tire where you can't really see it.
You can also tell if you need an alignment by checking tire wear. If the tires are wearing unevenly on the edges or are low/scalloped in the center, you need an alignment.
Yeah idk why he didn’t mention that. One of my cars seems to drive straight and doesn’t pull but the inside of the tire is wearing more than the outside on one of the front wheels
@@carsman248He didn't mention it because he probably couldn't, you can only do so much in RUclips Shorts
good to know
True
Part of what you say could also be caused by incorrect tire pressure...
This is one reason I go around potholes. Ironically, the cars behind me don't seem to notice or care.
Yea they're the ones getting alignments every year.
@@Akilles3 they call their cars POS's because they need bent parts changed (wheel hub for ex).
I mean sometimes they are difficult to avoid especially when there is a vehicle next to you and you don’t have space to move over.
@@matthewnikitas8905 very true.
I got pulled over once because I was trying to avoid cracks and potholes. The cop thought I was DUI or something.
My mother got an alignment at Sears in the 90s and one side of the car was higher than the other. She knew something was off when her sunglass slid from one side of the car to the other. She took it back obviously they did more than an alignment. It also turned out she needed new shocks. 😂😂😂
Some vehicles had a Ride Height Adjustment. Chryslers had torsion bar suspension.
Coming up next week! Don't check your tire pressure!
Exactly! Let Discount Tire do it for free! No more squatting at gas station air pumps for me. 😀🙌🏼
I was thinking the same thing after seeing the don't rotate your tires video and now this one.
I own a 20 year old Toyota Celica. I haven't had to check the tire pressure since I bought the carin 2003. If I owned a Chevy, I'd be checking it every day.
@@thehighllama8101 Like the crazy uncle we all had!

My tire store switches out my winter tires every 6 months for free. For the last two years they’ve been giving me a printout showing my car needs a front end Alignment. I was a Truck Driver 25 years and I will let them know when it really needs a alignment.
You do have to remember that many streets are crowned so allow for drainage. In this case, it can pull to the right a little but still be properly aligned.
Yep
Right, that's what makes it very difficult to know (on ur own) if you need an alignment.
or pull left for the Brits
Normally in those places they are aligned to compensate for the crown
Most manufacturer specifications account for the radius of the road. That’s why camber specifications are almost never 0.00
Oftentimes your car won't pull to one side or vibrate when it needs an alignment, but your tires will still wear unevenly .
I've never seen a tyre on any vehicle worn evenly in over 40 years of driving/being around tyre shops.
@EAMitch Yes really,... I've even noticed the same when looking at a pile of used tires at a depot, most have uneven wear. I wonder if it's got more to do with the state of the UK roads? Some have a steep camber for example.
@EAMitch You are mistaken or confused, let me be clear, I've never seen any tyres wear evenly across the whole width of the tread.
@EAMitch Well come to the UK and have a look around at the piles of used tires for yourself. They all have uneven wear.
exactly! i had some suspension work done recently and i’m waitin to get an alignment until i get new tires. my mechanic did good work replacing ball joints, tie-rods and i think stabilizer bar/link. truck doesn’t pull too much to R or L no shaking or vibrating but outer tires in front are wearing but that’s mostly because i stopped rotating them since i knew i was close to needing tires anyway. i didn’t understand his don’t rotate your tires video🤔if u can afford brand new tires every few yrs then sure why bother rotating🤷🏻♂️
Let me introduce you to abnormal and accelerated tire wear. That's the real reason you get an alignment
I started this video thinking I was just overthinking the way my car handles and then scotty just starting naming off all the freaking things that have/are happening to my car lmaooooo
Since my dad died, it's been obviously difficult to attain that specific feeling you get when your dad is either giving it to you straight, or looking after you out of his own love.
But watching Scotty's videos are a close second, even an exact substitution at times.
Thanks for looking out for me, dad...
My local shop has a $180 for 3 years of unlimited alignments. So every time I go off roading I get it checked/realigned, prior and after road trips. It's so worth it
Scotty, Scotty, Scotty. Certain types of tire wear can indicate an alignment is needed.
Guy guy guy He didn't say never get one, he said don't get it if ya don't need it.
In another video he also said you don’t even need to do tire rotations
Sometimes you cannot tell your vehicle is out of alignment until after your tire wears out unevenly.
I worked at a tire shop for almost 10 years and I heard customs saying that they don't need a alignment because there car doesn't pull to the left or right. Until after putting new tires on the vehicle and they noticed that the new tires are starting to get uneven tire wear. Then they say that we didn't recommend a alignment because if they did they would of gotten one. Thank God I always documented everything and I put down customer declined alignment. You see I live in New York and there are potholes all over the place and the best what I always hear was I avoid potholes. That is so impossible especially in New York city so that's why I say you should get the alignment done at least once a year or get it checked every 6 months to 8 months to make sure.
Work at a tire shop there are so manu components to a front end and 9 out of 10 times there are parts that are needing replacement dry rotted bushings inner tie rods outer tie rods bushings on the rack and Pinon (toyota) take care of your tires!!!
Scotty 2021: "Tire Alignments can save YOU money and PAY FOR THEMSELVES"
Scotty 2022: "Why TiRe aLigNmEnTs are the biggest scam in the industry!"
I'm a Tire Mechanic scotty. You forgot to mention the wear of one side of a Tire or the other getting smooth early is a bad alignment as well.
👍
If you have ANY front end work done like control arm, Ball joint, tie rod etc you must have the front end aligned
Yep, really should've mentioned observing abnormal tire wear patterns...camber or especially 'toe in' could be equally wrong on both sides and still track straight down the road!
EXACTLY.
I live in Michigan Mr kilmer.. we need alignments hahaha
I def get doc brown vibes from this guy. He must be who doc was referring to....Great Scott
Epic!
A lot of tire shops near me require the front end alignment if you want their complimentary road hazard protection. So yeah, road hazard isn’t really complimentary, but I’ll pay the $70 for the alignment to get the protection.
Another factor a defective tire can make your car pull . It also can make it vibrate . Tire bubbles are a big culprit and separating tire radials
Also worth noting is that a tire with a broken belt may cause a pull to the side the bad tire is on, and possibly a vibration at low speed if severe enough….
Oh, I think this is exactly what my vehicle suffers from, it pulls to the right (passenger), I did an alignment but the steering still pulls to the right side! Which belt are you talking about ? Serpentine one or chain belt ? Info: My car has 76k miles on it and been in a collision on the right side where the tire and passenger door is.
@@AngelLoverErbil The belt in the tire. This situation is easily proven (or disproven) by switching the right front tire with the left front tire. If now pulls left…bad tire.
If theres no obvious signs it doesnt mean you shouldnt do it.
Once its out of allignment theres opposing forces working against the vehicle that can transfer greater wear over to your suspension and steering. Even chassis.
It might be so minor out of alignment that you cant notice it, but if you keep driving it around and putting stress on the suspension it will get worse eventually.
Better off to do it frequently & save your tyres, mileage and handling.
I actually get an alignment everytime I get an oil change. At firestone you can pay about 2.5 x a normal alignment for a lifetime alignment for as long as you own the vehicle. So far Ive used it about 5 times - only little minor adjustments but still getting value out of what I initially paid. I also plan to own the car for at least 10 years.
As an alignment technician doing an alignment when the car has fresh new tires always makes your work shine. Sure maybe 1 out of 20 cars you don't need to touch any adjustments.
But doing an alignment on cars that have old crappy tires that like to make the car pull can be such time intensive additional amount of tire switching work that you don't get reimbursed for, that it never became gravy work.
Yup. I'm glad our company is fine just shipping the car if the pull is related to tires.
We send them to Discount Tire down the road
Here in the Northeastern U.S., hitting huge potholes is virtually inevitable despite trying to avoid them as much as possible!
Good after 5000 miles of pot holes to align to save tire wear. Cheaper than new tires.
Most times, you won't need a alignment until you start getting alignments.
If you get any work done on your suspension is a good idea to get alignment after.
why?
@@chrismcgowan5180 Alignments are adjusted using the bolts on the struts and the length of the tie-rods. As you drive the parts warp small amounts and bushings and ball-joints wear away, so you need it adjusted again after any suspension work. Regardless of whether the parts were replaced or only disassembled.
The angles are measured in thousandths of a degree, with even minor changes in toe/camber/caster angle making a big difference on tire wear, grip, and stability of the car at high speeds. Tires are expensive, and your life is priceless, get an alignment done.
I go to Firestone for unlimited alignments every 7k miles. Too many potholes on the roads I drive on
Bought a brand new vehicle this February. Needed an alignment right from the factory.
Was it a Chevy? Lol.
My bearings kept coming loose. One time the wheel came off while driving. It turns out all this because I went too long without an alignment. Now I think alignments are a good preventative measure.
An old red headed Navy diesel mechanic showed me how to align the front end, by using a tape measure & the width of the treads on the rear of the vehicle &the center of the vehicle!
One thing you should be cautious about is toe. If you have positive toe (the front wheels point in towards the front and rear in to the back), you may not notice any pulling as positive toe makes the car dynamically stable in a straight line but less responsive to steering. Negative toe does the opposite of this. Too much toe will create excessive wear. Ideally, you want no toe for everyday driving to reduce wear as much as possible.
Thanks Scotty. I think shops do rip people off and it’s easy on alignments. I’ve been driving for 27 years, owned 15 vehicles and have only gotten a handful of alignments in that entire time. Fully agree with you if the car isn’t pulling on the highway and the steering doesn’t vibrate it’s fine. Also check tire wear to make sure the tires are wearing evenly.
If you're driving your car and your steering wheel is off center you need an alignment.
Tire wear can indicate the need for an alignment and certain repairs may require an alignment afterwards.
I've threw away 2 tyres because of my wrong alignment - they weared unevenly. The steering wheel was straight all the times.
Yeah, you should check your tires for uneven wear occasionally, too.
@@gretchenk.2516But Scotty already told people not to waste money having your tires rotated😂. I wonder how much the tire distributors have paid him for this advice? And does he realize how many extra tires will end up in a landfill?
@Gretchen K. No the cause was the work on my suspension(seems my mechanic was not a fan of aligment too), but the car was doing just fine. However one day i checked the tyres and saw that the are bold from the outer side.
@@don2deliver Well not rotating the tyres is fine if you drive on good roads plus aluminium discs rarely deform to disbalance. If you have iron disks and your roads are bad you better do the rotation every year
@@yevgeniybistritsky1486 Wheels are not a factor in whether or not you should rotate tires. Most people should rotate their tires. The world needs fewer junk tire around. Make them last as long as possible.
This is so true another front end alignment company told me the same thing, by driving a car and looking at your tire wear will tell you if you need a front end alignment
My 11 year old Grand Caravan is in factory perfect 4 wheel alignment.
A local dealer said he'd love to charge me for an alignment but after driving through the computerized alignment machine, laughed and said don't waste your money.
I have to get one at least once a year because I have big aftermarket rims and if I don’t keep my tires aligned my tires will wear on the inside only very quickly. Rest of the tire will still look brand new.
It's always wise to align your car after you replace components on the power steering unit
Moral of the story...find a mechanic that is well known in the area fir being honest and trustworthy. Avoid taking your car to a dealership for repairs or diagnostics.
My Honda dealership tried to sell me a 4-way alignment and I was like, "naw, I think the car steers just fine.
Good luck finding a perfectly flat and smooth road to test whether your vehicle pulls to one side or the other. Even a slight cross wind will have an affect on how your vehicle tracks.
Also good luck finding a car that has manufactured specs of 0.00 degrees of toe straight. Manufactures know roads aren’t perfect and design their cars as such. Some are really good at it
Pulling to the left or right could just mean low air pressure in one of your tires so check your air pressure before getting an alignment.
Well if you continue to change suspension parts you’d be surprised how many alignments you’ll need like I do 😂
The alignment garage can scam you too. At safety inspection they told to replace a tie rod ends on both sides and thats it. So I did it. I went to alignment garage afterwards and they told me my car would need new ball joints and... tie rod ends😂. They also warned me about control arm bushings. And they could to the job right away and then align the wheels. I just left and visited another garage where they just aligned wheels as everything else was in good shape.
I guess it depends on the condition of the parts. If everything is ok than yeah its a clear rip off. If the mechanic points out the problem and explains it I guess thats fine. Because you dont do alignment on bad parts. Cuz after changing them you need to align again.
Thanks Scotty. I have been a car guy for 50 years and I have been saying this for the past 30 years. Some people over maintain there cars over a 10 year period because of mechanics looking for an additional charge or tire stores !
Have to disagree with scotty on this one. Some cars only have front toe as an adjustable alignment angle. In that case, don’t worry about it so much and only align it if you notice some abnormal wear or a pull. However a lot of modern cars have a lot of links with bushings that can wear in as little as 60K miles. That’s about the life of a set of tires. If you don’t replace what your vehicle needs for the alignment to stay within spec, you could be throwing money away on expensive new tires (and new vehicles often run 18” or 19” tires; not cheap). A lot of tire warranties are not going to cover a set of tires that were installed on a car without an alignment anyway. Also, don’t overpay for an alignment. $80-$100 is about the max you should be spending for a normal (not modified vehicle) alignment.
got 4 alignments but the car kept driving really bad like diving back and forth on the road, i on my own found both struts broken on the rear. not a single person saw that when i took the car in and told them the last alignment didnt do anything, glad i was able to pay them over 400 dollars for me to diagnose and fix the issue my self.
Hey, you know the old saying. "Want something done the do it yourself"

Coming up next week! Don't put fuel on your car, you don't need it
Next coming up! Drill holes in your radiator for better cooling.
I guess scotty thinks we couldn't piss without him telling us how.
I'm on my 3rd set of tires on my 98 Accord and have never had an alignment and the car tracks perfectly straight. Scotty is right on this one.
I know a lot of drivers that could use a good alignment 😅
If your steering wheel shakes like that you have a problem and it is not caused by an alignment which may or may not still need.
Next weeks video: "There's no need to check your oil every other time you fill up, just change it every 10,000 miles"
I got a bad alignment now I need another one 😔
Cars vary on how sensitive their alignment is. Some really do need frequent alignments, especially extremely cheap small cars. My current car has 85k on it and definitely does not need one though.
If you car pulls to one side, check your tire air pressure before getting an alignment though!
One thing to point out is that struts can wear out and mess with the camber measurements and kill your tires much faster so checking the alignment every 30-50k or so isn’t a bad idea.
Scorty.. you MUST share w us your secret to all your energy ...at your slightly mature age .lol
Another bad advice from....this guy. Just because your car isn't exhibiting symptoms of misalignment drastically does not mean the alignment is within spec. Pulling just a little or offset steering wheel can increase wear on tires faster. Many shops will check your alignment free. Ask questions...make an informed decision.
Here I am with my off roader needing alignments every other month from bushings
I love to see Scotty making shorts!!
Scotty, I have the lifetime alignment at Firestone. They only charge $200 for it and I get a new alignment and rotation after each oil change. My tires last forever. I do this with all my cars. They loose money on me lol.
@M R no. Firestone sells a “lifetime alignment” for around $200. As long as you own the car you can get as many alignments as you want for free. I buy my tires from them so the rotation is free as well. I go to the dealer for my oil change and then drop my car at Firestone for rotation and alignment at no charge. Hope that clarifies things.
Alignment doesn't cause shaking
Oh yes it does. Try driving a car like a ford fiesta or Toyota Corolla that has no rear toe adjustment the has been in a rear accident. You can get it to drive straightish, but man will it shake and vibrate like a MF. I see it happen all the time at work
Shacking? You meant to say Shaking, and yes if your car is out of allignment I can guarantee it will shake......... not shack. Have a good day.
That's because something is bent
But hay I must not know anything
Poor alignment, no alignment, damaged or worn front and rear end suspension and steering parts can all cause something to let you know something is out of wack and needs to be fixed! Only one part is in need of being replaced anywhere in the steering and suspension area it will need a full 4 wheel alignment in my opinion! I'm working on 35 years of working on vehicles and I'm still not a mechanic! I'd love to hear the stories from those that believe you never need an alignment of how the Air to fuel ratio doesn't exist and the car manufacturers made the term up just to mess with the consumer!
I aligned my own. The store bought alignment was off.
At least he's not telling you to not rotate your tires.
In Oklahoma we have pot holes in our potholes. Front ends get beat up...but yeah you gotta watch for the shake down!
I get notifications of your videos however sometimes I can't watch them because they say PRIVATE!!! I always watch your videos when I get notifications and they are very helpful to me. Thanks 👍😊
This is so untrue. I do emissions testing for the state so I drive almost everyone’s cars on a dynamometer. The amount of misaligned front wheel drive and all wheel drive cars I revive daily is mind numbing. PLEASE GET YOUR CARS ALIGNED
Someone needs some schooling 🏫 wheel 🛞 alignment is need especially when you get Uneven tire wear...💯 Facts
Scotty we have are reasons, normal we we say you need a alignment and your steering wheel isn't pulling L or R then its be you had some type of excessive tire wear, most times you might replace parts but it saves tire life.
You forgot about us off-roading/racing people. I change out suspension parts and rebuild on a regular basis. If you take parts off, just get an alignment to be sure.
This guy is for sure a tire salesman. 😂
Rusty rims may throw your tire "balance" too. My tires are new but, the rims are so rusty that it has bacon bits flying off. I thought those winter rims would last more than 5 years but "HAN" ! Wrong !
Just take it to a mechanic 80% of the population is clueless when it comes to this stuff .... If I tell them to let go of the steering wheel and if it goes off to one side they would most likely crash smh
Scotty you have a point.....as long as the drivers can dodge the potholes
I will say ive driven lots of cars that need alignments and you can tell instantly just see if it pulls a lot. A lot of times its a small pull so you wait it out and do it when it gets a tad worse
Scotty Kilmer is the OG of car knowledge. I have more trust in Mr. Kilmer then most people I know who think they know it all when it comes to automobiles.....
BEAM ME UP SCOTTY!
Wife always tells me I need an alignment
Been doing my own alignments for over 50 years. Careful measurement with simple tools does the trick and beats a dunce with $1,000s of equipment every time!
If a vehicle has a Caster Adjustment it is very difficult to do without a machine to take a reading. I had a few tricks to get them close without a machine, but I also did about 15,000 wheel alignments with equipment. The technician is the most important part of a wheel alignment. But doing a wheel alignment on a new well set up Hunter Machine sure is easy getting a perfect alignment in a very short amount of time.
Hmmm…. Scotty been giving some shady advice lately. Last week he told us we don’t need to rotate tires. This week he is telling us we don’t need alignments. Did the tire industry buy him out so they can sell more tires?
Tire rotations are a must if you want to maximize the lifetime of a full set of tires. Some people think that it’s cheaper to skip rotations but it shouldn’t cost money to rotate. If you buy from a reputable tire shop or big box like Costco/Sams they offer free tire rotations. At worst just do it yourself I have done so several times utilizing just the scissor jack, spare tire, and torque wrench. You might think it’s cheaper to just not rotate on a FWD car and just replace in sets of 2. This will actually cost more in the long run as the fronts will wear out considerably faster by not rotating. Think about it in a FWD the tires are both torquing and turning and more susceptible to anomalous wear. Rotating helps even out the wear. Regardless of what type of drive you have just rotate. Also most places offer a bigger discount when you buy tires in a whole set of 4.
Now alignments don’t need to be done as often as the tire shops say but you should check from time to time. Just by a lifetime alignment package as it’s most cost effective. My rear camber was of out of spec causing excessive inner tire wear that prematurely wore down the tire all the way to the nylon tire cords after only 27,000 miles. The car drove straight with no issues but the alignment was still off and killed the tires faster. Check it every year or 2 and have them make adjustments if necessary.
What about tire where? After rotation and balance if your tires are still wearing on in the front could that mean you need a front in alignment?
Where was your tire?
Depends on how they're wearing and how fast. If it's a FWD car it's normal for them to wear more quickly than the rear. Granted, they should be wearing evenly across the tread.
This is the first topic I agree with you at of all the videos I have watched from you.
Scotty, my NASCAR needs an alignment, it only turns left!
Hahaha ha 😂😂 good one.
Uh oh....do you go left, straight or right in & out of the pit...or does that vary from track to track? Richard Hammond (original BBC Top Gear) had his NASCAR experience with Kyle Petty here at TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY. Kyle told the hamster "mow the grass, you gotta mow the grass" in the constant left he was having to drive faster than what he was comfortable with. Kyle had a blast in the nascar behind the hamster. 😂🤣 You guys have my respect for your skills.👍
I got an alignment last week. When they finished the alignment was somewhat WORSE than it was before I brought it in.
If you drive on Michigan roads, chances are you will need an alignment often.
Exactly what I was thinking LOL
Bay City at it's best
THANK FOR BEING HONEST! GOD BLESS!!!
Premature tire wear is something you missed Scotty.
If the tires are wearing down unevenly or making feather edges you should have the alignment done.
Having the correct alignment saves you hundreds of dollars a year in fuel and tires.
But you're right. If you didn't drive bad roads, your suspension is in good shape and the tires are wearing evenly you should only need it once in a few years depending on mileage done.
Extensive wear on the inside or outside of a tire isn’t an alignment problem. Good advice for the normies.
What the hell do you mean? That's usually exactly what it means if you are talking about the edge of the tread and not the sidewall.
A front end or 4 wheel alignment is useless if you have suspension issues. Always verify that suspension does not have issues before aligning. It's like throwing money out the window. Verify then align!
This may be true however the tire shop that sold me my new tires told me to get the alignment or the 100,000 mile tire warranty would voided. I just got it done because I have just bought the car used and I didn’t want the tire warranty to be voided
Find a different tire shop... Discount tire required no such nonsense and Ive gotten over 20 different tires from them, of all types (car, truck, and Trailer!)
No tires last 100k miles, And if you read the fine print they require an annual alignment or every 20k miles to keep the warrenty. They will do anything to get out of it.

Ford Tempo & Topaz needed an alignment every Saturday (after your kids took it out on Friday nights). Instead of attaching the front suspension with an “A” they attached it with an “L” so every curb grind caused toe-in, and potholes caused parts replacement.
(Still a good car for kids because they weren’t able to go crazy fast in it)
What about those places that state they cannot honor a warranty if you don’t get an alignment?
