Hi Dr. Katie. Between 1:36 and 1:41 you said, “The meter of a phrase is usually draped over four bars with one big downbeat.” To better understand, would it be fair to say, “The meter of a phrase is usually draped over four bars with each phrase ‘STARTING’ on one big downbeat?” Forgive the upper-case as I simply wanted to clarify my question. Thank you Katie. Great youtube channel!

Hi, Dr Meyer, I was wondering if you would mind explaining something to me.
In lieder (looking at Brahm's vorschneller - Op. 95 -5), the last phrase of the first section (in Dm) modulates to D Major, in anticipation of the second section, which is in that key.
Analyzing the phrase structure in the minor section, the first 3 phrases are 8 measures long, ending each with a quarter note and a silence; but I'm not sure how to analyze and mark the structure (form?) of the last phrase (the one that modulates):
As the previous phrases and based on where the singing ends, I think it is also 8 measures long. But I'm not sure, first of all because here there is a fermata between bars 4 and 5. Secondly, the modulation to D Major "settles" already in the 7th bar, and after the singing ends (8th bar), there are 2 more measures already in D Major, before section B starts...what I don't know is if I should I consider and mark the end of the last phrase at its 8th bar, where the singing ends (subdivided 4 + 4 because of the fermata), or if I would need to include the extra 2 measures and say it's a 10 measure-long phrase, (subdivided 4 + 6).
I just don't know enough about these technicalities, and I wonder if the last two bars are simply an extension of the whole section, separate from the phrases containing the verses from the poem and therefore should not be considered part of the last phrase??
I hope I was able to explain myself clearly :\ and thank you for your time.

      Hi Flora,
It’s common for phrases to have short cadential extensions of around 2 bars. It sounds like your hearing is accurate with that analysis in mind. Always use your ears to tell you what is going on and then turn to the musical surface to find the logical explanation.
Also, Romantic era music begins to move farther and farther away from the Western Art Music tradition’s preference rules, so a reading with that in mind is also helpful.

    Hi Dr. Katie
At 3:26 did you say the viola and violocello lines use Black-chords or Block-chords?
Thank you. Please keep making these great educational videos!

@@DrKatiMeyerMusicTheory ma'am i asked about brass band scoring. If you can do a more detailed tutorial about how to notate for a brass section with the sibelius notation software..that will be a great help for us who compose with the software. I saw lot of videos but there is not what im seeking for 😖..
I hope you can do that..
