  • Loop 8 is a wildly surreal and innovative take on the JRPG that gives Re Zero and Haruhi Suzumiya Endless Eight vibes, but some people won't love it... But I actually did!
Thank you XSEED for providing this #reviewunit.

I love the setting of this world theyve created. Summer in Japan 1983. That ALONE caught my interest. Its obviously different from a more normal JRPG. Sometimes that can be a good thing and sometimes bad. I find this game very compelling and im going to give it a go. Thanks for taking a look at this Derek, that was fun.

This sounds really intriguing. The only dating game I've ever played is Hakuouki, which I played mostly out of interest in learning the history of the Shinsengumi which was good because there is very very little actual interaction with the game. But this idea of building relationships in order to have stronger allies in battle seems interesting! It's also really cool that there's same-sex romance options - its so wonderful to see more of that across the whole gaming industry over the past few years. Unfortunately, I have so much to play that I don't know when I'll ever get around to this - but it's definitely on my list now.

Meh, I wouldn't worry about it - if I found anything while looking at reviews (In my case it was Tower of Fantasy), it's that people just base their reviews around the majority opinion instead of actually looking over the entire game. If anything, this guy's one of the more honest reviewers

Wait but what if that's just you *wanting* someone else to say the game was good to affirm that you werent alone in liking the game?
Like, I'm not touching the game, I saw the gameplay, saw how the loop worked, I'm gold. Not my cup of tea that, I'm inclined to take the majority opinion on loop8. That doesn't invalidate that yeah, you can like the game. However, that doesn't mean you can't ignore that there are issues with the game as a whole that someone just watching the game for the first time will notice.
Everyone has their own subjective tastes, there's no objectivity in art. Just, man, when the thing in front of you is a toilet. You can like the toilet. In fact, the toilet is a *very famous art piece*, that doesn't mean the toilet is not a toilet.

I loved it so much and was wondering who else did. I managed to beat it on the first (well, technically second) loop, I sort of made it a challenge for myself to be able to do this, and it's entirely doable (I had to backtrack 5 days once). Now I'm on my 2nd (3rd) loop as the game lets you basically restart with your bonuses intact, to find different endings... The atmosphere, world, setting, characters are amazing, and there's a charm in how trying to decipher the story and mechanics translates into the protagonist trying to understand the world :D

I really appreciate your perspective on the game! It's been reviewed fairly poorly so far which is a shame because there seems to be some misunderstandings-- the game is a spiritual successor to a long running VERY complex series of social-sim JRPGS called gunparade march that flaunt gameplay similar to this. A game like this isn't gonna be perfect simply for the fact it's using these kinds of systems but thats also it's charm point. The relationships you build with the characters and the comfy world you inhabit are most important. I didn't know that there were same-sex options, it looks like one of the characters even has two dads, which is a nice touch. Thanks again for bringing attention to the game. You always have such a relaxing, good-spirited vibe to your videos!

Hm, Im still undecided about this game, on paper its everything I like in games but in practice its more than a little clunky. I dont mind the low fps animations nor the grind of the dating sim aspects, nor even the slow running around and the repetition, but what bothers me is how weirdly is the main plot treated and handled, as if all the characters already know what is going on and whats up with you, but you dont, there is even a small tutorial like section in the begining of the game but it does very little to actually set things up and moving the plot forward or finding more info is mostly a guessing game untill time just runs out.

I think most people don't understand the game, the game focus on a town and all happens in the same town, it is more than logic that the town is the same in the twisted version and therefore also the lack of dungeons. People want to create something that goes against the logic of the game. The loop system is not to go back and try to save anyone and everyone from dying people WILL die based on your decisions, it is not intended to go back and fix it. This is no Fire Emblem with permadeath and every time you lose a party member you reset the game, this is more like the Banner Saga series were people die and you move on, that is exactly what the devs mean by your decisions MATTERS. So the problem is NOT the game but people who don't understand the game!

Interesting. But if I get it it will be a a deep sale. Don’t want to take a chance I waist my money on a bad game.

I'll give you your dues for finding positives in this steaming pile of confusing ideas, but honestly Loop8 is by and large, a frustrating mess.

On console, you can fast-forward through any of the dialogue you've already read through, but I don't know if it's present on PC or not.

As much as I like the positivity, but I would say the romancing part is a bit weird. Especially the fact that the ones you can romance are, your younger version of a grandma, a elementary schooler and your cousin, apart from the fact the rest look under eighteen (I don't care what the age of consent is in Japan, it's gross). Other than that, I think the story cute. It's simple because it doesn't need to be anything more than that.

I complimented your voice but I need to rewrite my comment:
So… dating girls and bisexual dudes is awesome because the males are not ‘gay coded’? Sounds like ‘let’s be gay as long as we pretend that we are straight’… very weird. Somehow homophobic.
And let’s not talk about how girls being totally ‘girl coded’ is not a criticism.

Yes, representing gay men in ways that are not stereotypically gay is something I am happy to praise the game for. JRPGs have a history of portraying gay men as predators or even villains in a lot of cases. Davidvinc's video on the history of representation of gay people in RPGs is a really great resource for more information on that part. And I suppose you could ask _him_ how homophobic I am while you're at it.

Mario, the vast majority of gay men in JRPGs are represented as rapists, villains, pedophiles or predators in someway. If they're not represented in a negative light, they're normally just not represented at all, or their sexuality is completely swept under the rug, you only have to look at Sylvando to see that. Giving players the option to play the game in whatever way they see fit is a *good* thing, because normally the men are just kind of 'walled off' and you're not allowed to romance them, or in best case scenario you get to be 'best friends' with them, kind of like in the Trails series. So in a game like Loop 8 where relationships are at the center of the core gameplay mechanics, it's wonderful that the developers didn't decide to 'wall off' the men, and instead let you romance them as you see fit. This is the evolution of gaming that we need, one where everyone is represented, and where everyone can play it as they see fit. I for one, don't exactly fit the stereotype of what a gay man looks like and I'm glad that they didn't just include some token gay character that would be a walking cringe stereotype who you could only romance. And also, Derek is a good friend of mine and is in no way homophobic, please don't sling that accusation around thoughtlessly and needlessly, it can be incredibly damaging.

It’s nice to see a positive take on this game. I thought it looked great but early reviews have scared me off a little. I think I’ll buy it and give it a shot….right after Final Fantasy XVI and Trails Into Reverie

Thanks for the review. How long are you playing each loop, and how long did it take you to beat the game? Was there voice acting, and was it all Japanese or was there also an English dub? Is there much replayability (multiple endings or ending variations)?

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  Год назад +2

Multiple endings, English and Japanese voices available, partially voice acted. Took me about 26 hours to beat after 6 loops, but I have a feeling it will take much longer to 100% this game. New game plus is also available, seems like it was built to be re played a lot
