You know why Wynton is not on my list? First, let me say that Wynton is an amazing musician and trumpet player. Almost no one can touch him on the trumpet, certainly. The reason I've come to disregard Wynton as a trumpeter is that I can't name any other trumpet player that he mentored. That's probably on me, I'll admit. But still, all the guys on this list brought along many, many other trumpet players and other musicians throughout their career and those connections are myriad and clear. Not taking away anything from his accomplishments over the years and he's undoubtedly influenced and inspired others along the way but still...
@@teammosin9999 you haven't heard of Grammy winner Charlie Porter? World class player... Wynton was his teacher... and if you aren't aware of Wynton's incredible contribution to educating the next generation of musicians, you obviously haven't looked!
As a boy, I used to love listening to Al Hirt and Herb Alpert. Later, I was really into Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Miles Davis, Maynard Ferguson and I also really liked Chuck Mangione (I even went to one of his concerts). But now that I have seen a lot of videos and listened to a lot more players, I think the best of all time are: Raphael Mendez, Clifford Brown, Louis Armstrong and Maurice Andre. They each have top level mastery of the instrument but also a style they created that stands the test of time. Miles, for example, has a style that stands the test of time but I'm not sure he really has mastery over the instrument. Arturo has mastery of the horn like few others, but not sure he has a style that is so distinctive. Arturo can actually imitate and sound exactly like many of the greats before him.
We just had Doc at Henderson State and I was honored enough to play split lead for him. He actually lead the TS band for 30 years and played lead for about 5 years when Steve Allen was on. He's a great guy, very humble, and still blows the walls out!
The reason I became a trumpet player for 53 years is because I saw Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass live in 1968 at the sold out Philadelphia Convention Hall.
Doc is actually 89. And I feel that if you're going to put Herb and Miles on the list because of their influence and popularity, then Louis Armstrong should at least be somewhere.

Chuck Magione: First I was taking lessons at Eastman when he was still teaching. I later learned from a former teacher that he wasn’t that good of a horn player usually playing 3rd or 4th in jazz ensemble. But his true gift was arranging. His brother is equal as gifted jazz musician. Both are from my home town Rochester, NY
My intro into the interest of the trumpet? I like black metal, and the band Death In June. Both bands have used trumpets sparingly and they have a powerful militaristic dynamic. I’m thinking about getting an electric trumpet to start out on
I'm with you. Nobody can emulate Louis and nobody can match Maynards range and articulation. But its hard to only pick 10. Harry James, Clifford Brown --the list is almost endless.
This list is way too political. Yes, I like Herb Alpert. His style and taste in music is impeccable but that doesn't make him a great trumpeter. Doc Severinsen should be number one. I have yet to hear a trumpeter who is as crisp, clear and with the developed range of Severinsen. If you're talking influence, where is Louis Armstrong or Wynton Marsalis? Where is Harry James? How about Lee Loughnane, the outstanding horn player from Chicago? I can't buy into this list. It examines popularity more than mechanics.
No, Chet wasn't popular, Mendez wasn't that popular... how can you fail to see that? Come on bro, wake up 😂 You can't put Severinsen about Sandoval, that makes ZERO sense

Phil Driscoll (Trumpet AND Singing, Mark Zauss, Vizzutti
No Wynton?
Wynton kinda falls under the same category as Vizzutti or Andre tbh
my thought is Wynton play Jazz a lot better than Vizzutti.
James Morrison?
My intro into the interest of the trumpet? I like black metal, and the band Death In June. Both bands have used trumpets sparingly and they have a powerful militaristic dynamic. I’m thinking about getting an electric trumpet to start out on
Umm.... Doc is basically 90.. he's 89 right now but is turning 90 in a few weeks
shhh. 87 is the new 29. it's a secret
Yea, you rocked this! I agree with HA being #1
glad to see someone with some common sense :)
louis dowdswell
really?
well hes one i just wanted to mention him
I completely agree
Louis is fantastic no doubt but he definitely doesn't deserve to be on a list of the greatest trumpet players of all time.
Wrong. Like Coleman Hawkins on tenor sax, Louis nearly invented the modern jazz trumpet. HE was the most influential trumpet player of ALL TIME.
My favorite Trumpet player is Louis Armstrong and Maynard Ferguson
Herb Alpert may be the most successful trumpet player but that does NOT mean he is the BEST. You are confusing the two categories.
Wynton Marsalis should have been at the top of the list. He is truly the best trumpet player of all time.
Herb albert no1 hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha man you made my day I laughed a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
in b4 gizmodo steals this
or watchmojo lmao
WERE IS LOUIS ARMSTRONG AND WiSTON MARSALIS!!! SHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
my favorite are those two and Arturo Sandoval
wiston?
Rafael Mendez is one of my favorite trumpet players. Although I love Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie they can play nowhere as good as him; however, they are more influential than he is.
