What you are saying here is something I've been thinking for a long time. I used to consume article after article when Hodinkee's new features came out every few days. Now I just glance at it and maybe read an article that may peak my interest. Not like in the past. I now feel like Hodinkee is just trying to sell to me at every stop. Jack is gone and so are some other folks that used to be fun to read. Also one of my favorite articles (Bring The Loupe) is no longer being written, replaced by article after article of watch reviews of watches that are now sold at the Hodinkee Shop or Crown and Caliber. Hodinkee is just that much fun anymore!
No Jack, no Ben, No Cara, No Stephen, No Hodinkee. Also, the demise of Watchville says it all. They don’t want to be the authority on watches, they have become just another retailer that treats others in this space as competition and not fellow enthusiasts.
I say when it comes to business competition, we the consumers often come up on top. In this case however, we lose a big part of that journalistic and public service side with Hodinkee being diluted this way.
I still think Hodinkee is great if you just enjoy reading about and seeing great photography of watches. I don’t spend as much time on there as I used to, but I still enjoy it for what it is - the Robb Report of watches, where I’m definitely not the target audience but still enjoy it. But I’m more of a vintage guy, and the sites roots are in vintage. But they definitely left us vintage folks behind when they turned into a AD retailer. So we had to go somewhere else. Where? Instagram. I spend almost all my watch media consumption time on instagram now. Do I get the same depth of storytelling as I did at early hodinkee? No. But do I get to see great photography and expand my vintage knowledge base? Absolutely.
Again… banging on about John Mayer. Clymer is obsessed with him. He’s NOT representative of the watch collecting market. Hodinkee is just an anachronism now - ironically. This is a good analysis. Imho. You are spot on. Put simply. Hodinkee has had its time and silly Ben Clymer has lost the plot.
@@DesignAtelier Rolex and John Mayer. Both yesterday’s trend. Which should make them collectible. But sadly, they both are deliberately corrupting their own market. Ben Clymer and John Mayer make a nice couple. They are welcome to each other.
First off, your content is of excellent quality. Second, everyone oozes over the John Mayer videos, personally I think ‘The Long Return’ is the best thing they did. Third, Jack Forster jumping ship has definitely affected there leadership.
Jack Forster is a huge loss to the platform. Hodinkee started out as an enthusiast Watch community but now I see it as a watch retailer with articles. The same as watchbox. Watchbox has greater resources. I predict that Watchbox will take over.
Hodinkee is an absolute joke, and it was long before Jack departed. That said, now that our "watch dad" is gone, there is simply no reason to visit their extremely biased and dumbed-down site. It's almost hilarious that they think we want to read content from their "watch newbie" as opposed to a seasoned expert.
I like and respect what Hodinkee has done. I do not think it is totally odd for items that are luxury / non essential to take a drop when you have the stock market drop 30-40% adjusting from excessive stimulus. During the virus you had people sitting at home getting bigger checks than if they were working . Lots of misc junk was purchased all over . Not that I think fine watches are junk , I was glued to my iPad many of day that my office was closed . I think I purchased 2-3 watches during Covid. Just my thoughts, not an expert opinion . JD
The correlation with COVID may work, but the pandemic started around March-June 2020. I wonder what happened in 2019 that pushed viewership up between then and the start of the pandemic.
That was a great video of a more in depth subject, I thought you broke it down very well and did a great job explaining without dumbing it down. It was quite good, I didn't realize this was going on with Hodinkee, but I'm also not surprised. They have a real credibility issue, especially since they opened the shop. If it were me I'd spin one off into its own company and rename it, and maybe they have I'm not sure. Just for appearance's sake.
I do feel like Hodinkee pushes some watches that people don't care about. I would give them credit for collaborating with fan favorite brands. They just finished a G-Shock collaboration after an amazing Hamilton release. The limited SCGM239 and Tag Dato were amazing watches that I went out of my way to get.
I don’t know. I have gotten some of my best watch deals in the 3-5k band width for under 3k on Crown and Caliber. Tim Masso is great, but to me comes off as a really good car salesman. I usually use him for quick spec and hands-on overviews, and shop somewhere else, as Watchbox’s pricing is nothing special. In fact, I think they miss opportunities to sell on Tim’s reviews by not putting a direct link. I’m never going to email him. Whereas on Hodinkee’s static content, I am offered the opportunit to “shop the story.” I don’t know that I necessarily agree with your take (you don’t compare with WB, and views don’t tell us conversions, though you used the terms “half of what they made in March,” suggesting sales when talking about those stats, but perhaps you meant, “half as many visits that they made”). At any rate, thanks for the engaging topic/vid, it will be interesting to see what Jack does, and how Hodinkee continues to adapt to his departure. You’ve definitely put a light on the transformations. Btw, didn’t TGV go to Watchbox once? . . .
