I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well ruclips.net/user/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

*I met Kevin Van Dam in South Carolina At a boat ramp, I said hey that's a nice rod & reel there. (NOT Knowing who he was) He said it's mine custom made, and Now it's yours!* Had a KVD crankbait on it before it even came out.

Thanks for the great info, The last couple years I've been moving up to longer rods, from 5'6" and 6' up to 7' and I've seen a big difference in casting distance, also I now have better quality reels, such as the 2 Quantum team KVD reels I bought recently and I am very impressed with. One of my team KVD reels I loaded with 65 lbs braid for frog fishing, I get great distance with it without a lot of effort.

Hey, Mr. VanDam... you're on target with it all. Nay sayers are just plain wrong (and just jerking your chain). I outcast my boater partners during tournaments enough that they say so - and b/c I do what you say in this video - use a 200 series Quantum and step into the cast. (this video is not 101 freshman stuff for setting your brake system, etc, b/c it invites 100 series reel users to step up to the 200 series... 300 is for musky/pike anglers). I just happened across some 200 series Quantums a while back and bought of few of the EXO SPT200's, and am using them in tournaments... and they're excellent reels: Very reliable and the wider spool along with stepping into the cast IS how to get it done. No more 100 series for me b/c of the difference in spool size and drag systems for handling bigger bites. They're still low profile too. And, fyi, I did what you say in this video BEFORE I watched this video. My only complaint about the EXO series is sometimes experiencing difficulties while removing and replacing the side plate to adjust the micro drag - I get it but sometimes it's just not cooperative. OTHERWISE... I will be trying the 200 series Smoke reels the next time I'm in the market. And, by the way, with your record those that would simply consider you an easy target - or it's the competition trying to drag you down. Ignore it Sir!

good video but not the best. reel tension and the brake make a huge difference in distance and the ability to throw an extremely light bait like a weightless zoom trick worm. i can whip my rod as fast and as hard on heavy lures as i can super light baits on my many bait casters because of understanding reel tension and the break system. once someone perfects weight with tension and the break they can cast anything anytime on a bait caster.

  • @loganbrower3445

Everytime I really try and get it out there I get birds nest. Even with my thumb on the spool. Am I not applying enough pressure? My spool is tight, I tune the reel where the bait drops without backlash. But at that same time I feel like like it doesnt drop as fast as I feel like it should. But if it's not like this then I get birds nest everytime. I cant make any overhand casts either. I'm using a okano reel and power pro braid

    • @ashleywynn4923

Dont whip the rod fast as in dont go from forward of your body to back fast- do that at a medium speed then throw it fast forward. Watch kvd. He isnt whipping it back and then whipping it forward. He is going back at a medium pace then going forward at a fast pace. Hope this helps ya.

@Gator Jordan Well maybe you should get some thicker skin IF that riled you up. Must be from all that sponsored fishing that all you have to do is show up. All you rich bass fisherman can't take a little corrective criticism. You say, because of your fancy boat, that we are to take your word for the distance you get while casting. I'll have you know I graduated 1st in my class from charm school. They are enrolling next week in your home town for spoiled fisherman. LOL :)
