- This Toyota likes to buck a little between 30-40 mph while shifting. The transmission service requires you to drop the pan and replace the filter and fluid. this type of service will allow you to visually inspect the transmission internally and make a good judgement call as to the life expectancy.
I bought an 02 highlander with 230k for $600 bucks, the guy told me he put new tranny fluid in the week prior, needless to say I was weary. It started slipping a week later and then withen a few days it wouldn’t even shift gears. I did this exact service for my first time and the filter was so clogged it wouldn’t even let fluid through! I put the new one in and everything back together and it’s worked perfect ever since! Almost 8k since moving from Seattle back to north Idaho and not a single issue🥳😆. Love the videos!
Yes, I've heard many people say doing a full transmission fluid change (multiple flushed) and it shifts like new
I had the same experance working at a trans shop. about half of the trans we rebuilt did not need to be rebuilt. The ''service special'' was a com-on to get you in the shop then they would show you the small particles in the pan and say you needed an rebuild. A lot of the black in the old oil is worn off friction disk material.
Nothing like an honest person 👍🏽👍🏽
Hi Matt I love your idea about the elderly and those with financial hardship. Get video thanks !
Great video! I have exactly same year and model 4runner which needs to do service, do you think it's also possible to replace the solenoid as well if I drop the pan?
I don't know enough about the pinion, but I do know that it's totally worth it to do the timing belt (ignition) and other stuff while your at it, and the transmission fluid CHANGE, YOURSELF because these will last forever. I've seen 500k PLUS! mileage runners that run buttery smooth. Definitely, not worth it if you pay someone else to do it. But if you take some weekends to do it yourself, TOTALLY worth it. If you're like me you'll use OEM parts since these are pretty intrusive jobs you don't want to go back into correcting.
Rust is totally a dealbreaker on this. Sadly, no recall like the tacomas.
Very helpful information. Just curious how many miles on the 4Runner and if it been used for towing a fair bit?
I was told absolutely do not service a transmission, as soon as you do it you will have problems from there on. WHAT DO YOU THINK?
It's got 170,000 on it. The fluid has never been changed. It will be like a new transmission when you get it back together. The fine metal is just wear and tear. normal
I have a couple questions to ask. I have a 2005 4Runner V6 Transmission A750F. Had a Check engine light with the VSC Trac & VSC off illuminate on as well. I used a OBD reader, the code was P0751 (1/2) stores Shift Solenoid A Performance or Stuck off. Severity 2 of 3. Few days later I decided to take 4Runner to a shop to double check. They informed me more codes had popped up. P0751 (1/5) P0974 & P2716 Pressure D. I then decided to take it 4Runner home because the estimated cost $2500. Once I got home I disconnect the battery 4Runner sat-for a bit. Then recheck the codes again. Now the only code that popped up is P2716 (1/2) Pressure Control Solenoid “D” Electrical. Now I am super confused. Please help. Thank you! Thank you for the videos.
How is excess fluid removed after a service
I have a question. Had a recent hard stop due to a accident in front of me. When I immediately pressed the gas pedal to go around. The 4runner hesitated then jolted very hard and began to move forward. I was told that is a sign of a bad torque converter. I've also noticed some moderate acceleration issues. What's your take on this symptom. I have more garage experience with manual transmissions so just not sure.
Hey buddy I got a little tip for you, If you're going to change the filter get it from Toyota next time not autozone or O'reilly's or wherever that's from
Toyota transmission is very sensitive to aftermarket parts, if you're going to get the bolts from Toyota your mouth will get the filter there too and the fluid.
Hope this tip helps you
how long before some serious issues if one does not put the three or four magnets onto the pan to collect metal particles???
Hi Matt, My 4th 4gen 4Runner will not shift into 4th gear and overdrive, could it be the solenoids, does the same solenoid shift 4th and OD? Help.. Great video.
Good job Bro..I appreciate your work
Thank you. it means so much to me when some one speak those simple words to me. Trust me not many do.
I have a transmission tota 08 V6 4 wheel drive When I come to stopsIt will then feel like it's taking itself out of gearIt will be like a bumpOnly problem I'm having with it
I have a 105,267 miles 07 toyota 4runner v6 4.0,i would own transmission service. Hope i dont run in to no issue like what you face.
Have P0756 code : solenoid B performance or stuck which solenoid is considered B, I seen s1 s2 sl1 sl2 assuming the s2 or sl2 would be B, also only shifts up to 4th gear no 5th or OD what every you wanna call it
Thank you for your video. What car would you recommend for 1st time driver. 4runner ir rav4?
I'd go with the 4 runner. So long as it is taken care of. Don't miss oil changes and service the trans they are tanks and hard to destroy.
4runners are tanks but if you get a v8 make sure you do a timing belt replacement if your over 150000 miles because these motors are interference meaning this motor will crash hard if the belt brakes OEM recommends every 90000 on timing belt but I didn't replace mine until 250000 miles and it was ready to break good luck in your venture on vehicles but you can't beat Toyota
But the V6 has a timing chain the v8 has a belt
i have a 2007 limited one and my pops and i thought that you can drop the pan at least and change the filter
did you do it? what happened
How to check it without a dipstick
Bro how many liters did it take to fill a change?
I have a 2004 4Runner with the 4 speed auto, and it’s leaking from the main seal near the torque converter. Has anyone ever seen this before?
Good luck 👍Toyota 4runner truck
Do the Drain plug and fill plug have Crush washer to change at every transmission service??
Yes
Is there an easy way to check the transmission fluid on an 06 4runner like this?
not really no. its dumb design
There is a bolt that is a 5mm Allen on the pan it will say check fill through the tail housing bolt 24mm until it comes out of the hole in the pan that says check
It’s pretty easy, on a level surface place it on 4 jack stands all around. Remove the check/fill plug on the side of the transmission housing. Fluid should slowly trickle out. If it comes out a lot faster, it’s overfilled...let it drain to a trickle and replace plug. If none comes out add fluid until it trickles out. Done.
If the fluid is very dark leave the fill plug out and remove the drain bolt at the bottom of the transmission. (Always remove the fill plug first before the drain plug, u need to ensure you can refill transmission or your stuck). You can also remove the pan and change the filter but it is a bigger job.
Also if you want to try and get as much of the old fluid out of the transmission and torque converter you will want to drain and refill the system (with fresh fluid) 4 or 5 times then drop the pan and replace the filter and refill with fresh fluid. You use a lot of transmission fluid (make sure to check your owners manual for the correct fluid type & use ONLY this) and it’s expensive but I think it’s worth it if you are keeping your vehicle past 200k. A “MightyVac” type vacuum pump really speeds up this process. Good luck!
@Matt Shaughnessy what do you mean not really? You have no idea what your talking about lol that never read the manual, makes shit videos with bad advice sheesh . There is a level check bolt on the bottom.of the pan for goodness sakes lol
What are your thoughts between rebuilt transmission and new trans?
If you have the money always go with new......it pays in the long run....rebuild nowdays can cost a much as a new one so ask for both quotes at the counter To compare and weigh the risk and benefits.
Hey Matt I just bought a 07 SR5 V6 RWD with 186K miles. Would you recommend me to get my transmission serviced?
I believe the transmission has never been touched.
@@tommyt2047 did you ever get it serviced ?
@@tommyt2047If you don't know, that's always a yes. Change every fluid that's liquid in any car you just bought used. Also change or at least inspect spark plugs, belt, coil packs,PCV,thermostat, oil and air filters, clean O2 sensor and throttle body. Anything that has to do with the engine and transmission must be cared for the most and on time. Better yet change everything early.
@@SLickev92Valve cover gaskets may need replacing as well.
Hey Matt, are you still working for yourself, I have a 2006 4Runner I need the trany serviced. I’m in Boise as well.
yes I own a shop in eagle now.
hey man I have a question about changing filter and fluid in a a750f could u help me out?
I had a 750 f and changed the oil a lot, what's your question?
I have a 2007 4runner sr5 with 170000 miles and mine jerks(feels like a pop) as soon as I accelerate from a complete stop. So between 0-5mph. At times, when I'm at a complete stop waiting for the green light and my foot is on the brake it jerks as if the transmission went into a gear. Time for a new transmission, solenoids? Any help is appreciated! Thank you.
Hmmmmm. Any codes? Soilnoids do have their own obd2 codes.....might be worth it to pull the pan and service and inspect it.
@@MattShaughnessy6 no check engine light on. I have not hooked on a scanner to confirm for any pending codes. Do you think changing the solenoid would be a smart thing to do when they cost over $150each?
Grease the drive shaft. It’s the yoke sliding into itself and it gets tight on old grease
Maurice, I’d like to know how you took care of this problem.
I’m having the same issue, I’m gonna try and do what @@ethan_pennington is suggesting
I have 2007 Sport V8 2wd and would like to do this service but cant find a refill for the fluid.
go to the dealer.
Would you use an item such as the Mityvac to remove the fluid from the pan and refill?
I was wondering the same thing, but I guess the filter would still be dirty, since that's just replacing some Trans fluid
wow, that fluid looked nasty!!!
