    The song comes from the late 18th century poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge of the same name. They stay very true to the poem and really bring it to life! The imagery that the music invokes is just amazing!

      As a really brief synopsis: A very elderly ex-sailor tells his story to a passer-by that is on his way to a wedding (the "wedding guest"). The Mariner kills an albatross, which is visits a curse upon him and his ship. His shipmates hang the corpse of the albatross around his neck to try and ward off the curse, but it doesn't work and the ship is becalmed for an incredible amount of time. Eventually the ship runs out of fresh water, and his shipmates start to die off one by one of thirst. Eventually he repents his action and prays for the beauty of the animals around him, which breaks the curse, and the sky opens up in a storm and it begins to rain. Shortly thereafter another ship appears and rescues the Mariner.

    Iron Maiden is one of the greatest metal bands ever. They are the “thinking mans” metal. Most of their songs are based on history, literature, popular culture. They’ve been around since the 70s and are still creating new music and touring. They have a large fan base around the world and all of their success was without radio air play. This song is based on a poem by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

    "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" is the longest major poem by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, written in 1797-98 and published in 1798 in the first edition of Lyrical Ballads. Some modern editions use a revised version printed in 1817 that featured a gloss.

    It is, and isn’t. Those lines ARE part of the song, but Maiden didn’t write them. That’s the second of two direct quotations from Coleridge’s poem. The first was sung earlier,
    “Day after day, day after day
    We stuck, nor breath nor motion
    As idle as a painted ship
    Upon a painted ocean
    Water, water everywhere
    And all the boards did shrink
    Water, water everywhere

The title of that album was "Powerslave" and the title song of the album tells the story of an Egyptian Pharaoh who despite being worshipped as a god by his people is forced to come to terms with his own mortality. But when Bruce does write one, it is an absolute epic. Empire Of The Clouds came about after Bruce won a grand piano in a charity auction, and (not being a pianist until then) decided to teach himself to play on it. "Empire" was the result. His debut as a pianist came on that song.

    For shorter songs, the starter pack for Maiden would be "Aces High", "The Trooper", "Run To the Hills". Slightly long, but not as long as this (7-8 minutes), the live versions of "Fear of the Dark" and "Hallowed Be Thy Name" are must see classic performances. There are dozens of great Maiden songs to pick from; these are just the popular standards.

    The Egyptian backdrop is based on the album cover from which this song comes from, "Powerslave" (also an amazing song btw).....the song itself is based on a wonderful poem from samuel taylor coleridge of the same name. The song has its many breaks and shifts due to the telling of the tale through the music itself...knowing the story and relistening will allow you to appreciate it a whole lot more...cheers !

    The whole thing is a story. Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a classic poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The middle part represents the sea becoming completely calm, so that the ship is basically stranded in the middle of the ocean. The creaking sound is the creaking of the ship, and that along with the smoke is supposed to sound eery, like a ship at night not moving surrounded by fog.
    If you have ever heard the term albatross around your neck, it comes from this poem.

    • @phillee2814
      @phillee2814 3 года назад

      The albatross was not considered in any way special until Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote this poem - they were nicknamed "Cape Sheep" because ship's crews ate them and found the taste to be a bit like mutton. They would also capture them and keep them as pets, because once on board a ship, they could not achieve the long run across the water needed to clear the bulwarks. They must have made poor pets though, as they are pretty vicious and snappy.

    AT 12:56, "I love this, right here..." yes, those melodic passages are the ultimate Maiden hook; those melodies, those guitar harmonies, Steve Harris is so damn good at building a song to reach those vistas and plateaus, Maiden is full of those epic, gorgeous melodic passages.

  • @headhunter8106
    @headhunter8106 3 года назад +1

    The Egyptian stage theme is a recreation/homage to the one used in their Live After Death tour of 1985-86 where they toured in support of their 1984 album Powerslave which used a great deal of Egyptian style artwork in the album jacket covers, sleeve designs, inserts, and all merchandizing. Iron Maiden have always relied heavily on artwork and imagery to support their musical themes, and they've always brought those themes into their stage sets as well. The point of this 2008 tour was to revisit that period in their career between 1984 through 1988.
    As for the story-telling you were wondering about, this song is based on the lengthy Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem, Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The slow middle section is meant to represent the death of the Mariner's entire crew (this is where you lost track of the lyrics; "With heavy thump, a lifeless lump, they dropped down, one by one" quote directly from the poem) and is now left alone and adrift.

One suggestion... when something like this comes up and you comment that afterward you will be looking more into the song or band or whatever, tack some of that onto the end of the reaction video. It would be very cool to hear you react first to the music that you're experiencing, and then if it opens a window that you want to explore it would also be very cool to see you reaction to what you found and learned! Iron Maiden was one of the very first of what you might call the second wave of metal, following Black Sabbath and Dio (with Rainbow, before he went solo) in the mid/late 70's. Some of the other metal bands that grew out of the same era were Judas Priest, Motorhead, and arguably AC/DC. (though they never agreed that they were metal) So that's why so many people love Maiden: because they were one of the first true pioneers of the genre, and have been making great music for more than 40 years now. Bruce Dickinson is one of the all-time great metal vocalists. A few years ago, Dream Theater (themselves a really big band) agreed to go on tour with Maiden as the *opening act*, even though they'd been headliners themselves for decades. That's how big and influential Maiden is in the Metal community.
    If you want a new song of theirs to check out, two of their most well-known songs are "The Trooper" and "Hallowed Be Thy Name."

    Bruce is their vocalist and pilot. He flies them from location to location in the 747(?)they own and use for touring. Then he gets some sleep, and runs around on stage for 3 hours singing his ass off. Only in heavy metal will you see such hard work and dedication. The most stoic and honest genre of art ever created.

    The long instrumental section in the middle gives the singer a few minutes to take a break without interrupting the concert, but it also breaks up an already long song for listeners. In this song, it is the period where the ship is stranded at sea without any wind, all the crew except the mariner having died. Storywise, it mirrors the period that the mariner is stuck, setting up for his bout of anger which gives way to blessing God's creatures which breaks the curse. On a side note, since it seems people have forgotten about the Coleridge poem, the poem is the origin of the idiom of having an albatross around your neck, or something being an albatross.

    Heavy Metal . . Is a tribute TO Iron Maiden 🤘
    Have seen them many times, since the 80s ... And they perform with more energy than any other, they are always having fun on stage, the crowd is a mix of ALL ages, all walks of life, everyone knows the lyrics, and they sell out the largest arenas, on 5 continents, still, to this day ( barring pandemics ) and will be back on tour, next year.... Do yourself a favor, and go see them. You won't be disappointed -

    That song, "Powerslave" is a really good one as well, but RotAM closes the album magnificantly.
    Also, according to false history, the "iron maiden" originated in Egypt as a method of torture and death, so it's kind of fitting.
