You have NO idea how much I needed this. I just purchased a condo and my glass dining table is too large. I should have a round table but this was an investment I don’t want to give up
@@JulieKhuu I’m so shocked you replied! Thank you! It’s a rectangular table with a custom glass so it fits the base. You gave me the idea to place it in the center of the room horizontally with the shortest end against the wall against the longest wall. Think of the letter “T”. I’m going to get benches for each side. Ill keep 2 of the white leather dining chairs and place one in each corner slightly turned towards the table about 30 degrees. I’m putting large black “French door (?)” mirrors on either side of the table floor to ceiling. I’ll strategically sprinkle some greenery around as well. Now I’m about to watch a video to learn how to replace a light fixture. 😂
BRAVO, JULIE. Very Well done. I am enjoying your small space series as well as learning much from each one. Education and inspiration wrapped up in well-edited videos. Thank you!
Just a comment before we get carried away with the benefits of a round-edged table: they are a challenge to work with those times you have a huge gathering. With a rectangular table, you can abut another table, run a tablecloth over the whole thing to hide the seam, and everyone dines together, banquet-table style. You can’t do that so easily with a round or oval table (says the guy who would kill for a Saarinen oval pedestal table but knows he’ll hate himself afterwards).
I've been absolutely lost on what to do with my dining space - I've maybe even commented somewhere on a video before about it. Its been a year and a bit of not knowing what to do because I live in a small half hexagon open floor plan. I have two chair, a bench, and a small 4 seater rectangular table. I've had about 24 inches clearance on both sides (between the wall and the kitchen island) and its driven me nuts. I couldn't find another table that was smaller or fit better. I never considered having the bench on the wall side and therefore needing less/no passage way room. Duh! I just ran downstairs to my dining room and switched it around to the layout at 9:14. THANK YOU! While I'm small, as soon as we can start having guests over (I bought just before pandemic) I'm sure I'd feel stressed about everyone else dealing with the strange clearance I had set up. I think you just solved my issue FINALLY! My layout is extremely unique so I haven't found anything that's worked yet.
Many of her ideas i hv seen in small spaces...nce ones...making cramped spaces look aesthetically fine spaces is a skill...wth modificatns eyesores can become eyebrow raising spaces... Xtremely talented u are j😊😀😍

Hi Julie, MaryAnna here! Great video! I am loving this series and you are a great hostess! My Dining Room is 15x 11 and I currently have a round table, but I am getting rid of it and going to get a rectangle table and new chairs. The challenging part is the windows and the main wall space (where I am going to put a large painting) do not align evenly... I’m considering displaying the painting off center of the wall it will be on to better align with the windows on the opposite wall. Also, on the wall where painting will be- hanging it off center will leave room at the end for a buffet or baker’s rack. I wish I could afford a decorator, but I am on a humble budget. Thank you for your ideas- always appreciate your videos 😁
Julie thank you so much, we habe an open conceot ranch in Maine and can see the ocean from our windows on the left 2 large and triple windows with one leading to a large porch. We love the view. Its the artwork as no walls. The kitchen is to the right of thd windows with the living room behind it.the dining atea is square and Im thinking a round table would be best deating 4 thst has leaves to become oval when family comes. I truly thought a rectangle was best but now you have opened my eyes.. thank you fir your insights. I love watching and thumbs uping your videos..
Round softens up all the angles so you don’t feel confined to specific sides, thus partially limiting those precious views. Your instincts are right on Mamma 🙌🏻
Most of these changes already have been done by my mom...and Its a gamechanger..i noticed all those changes in my home ..but she without any interior decorating ideas...she keeps changing things..around nd i hv u to guide... Now lookng for creating focal points as per ur advice...😀 Thanks kylie😎🙏
This was perfect as a vanity desk for me. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxMAlHv7-BBWMrPRm5-uEoD6rtdT7SG2Qr Especially the glossy finish. Easy to cleanI was looking for something that wasn't the traditional white and with more of a modern feel. This fit the bill beautifully. I put it together with no problems, by myself in under an hour.Make sure you double check where you place the drawer tracks before screwing down. I had one track that needed to be aligned with different holes than the rest.
hey thanks for the video. super helpful. i wouldnt have considered banquette tables until i saw your video but my kitchen is the perfect set up for one!
I have what sounds like a super similar layout! Our kitchen is semi-open so I don’t have an obvious wall to put the table against for the banquet solution Julie described. The room is also in the middle of the condo with 4 doorways going into the same space and a hallway running along one edge of it. I’m pretty perplexed too, best of luck to you 😊
Thank you for your video. I have been troubleshooting my dining space for years. I have a narrow, long dining space that is in front of the back slider door. The space also leads to the living room and kitchen. There's lots of traffic around the table (which we hate lol) we would prefer to sacrifice table size in order to have open walking space. That leaves us with the end "nook" part of that room with a large bay window. So based on the rules I can go with a 1 long (not L shape) bench/ banquet seating in front of the window. The table can only be 39- to 42 inches Long. The table shape is my only question. The overall space is a narrow rectangle. I'll be moving the dining space over to one end of the room. So the actual dining space could be viewed as a small square. I can add a backless bench or 2 chairs across from the 1 long large bench. If I go this route my table will only seat four. Perhaps I can find an expandable table for those occasions where I need to see more people? The space has been vacant for a while because nothing seems to look/ fit right. We typically eat all meals on the kitchen Island. I wouldn't mind a smaller dining nook space for coffee or a nice focal point 😂
I have a canoe shaped table, which is on 36” wide. It works great for narrow spaces, and opens up for 10 people to sit. Not much room for centre pieces or family style serving dishes, but really great otherwise.
Love your channel. Hoping you can help, I have a small 70's bungalow, no dining, eat in kitchen, one wall kitchen and just not sure on placement and how to make the room more welcoming. It's open to the living room, front door in middle and side door with steps on side (if you can imagine) approx 15x15 space.
Nicely done! Quick question, at 1:38 on the video, you show 2 bar tables push together and suggested it can also be pulled apart! Love that idea for my small space! Where can I source the table you show? Thank you!
I had to Google that since I’ve never heard of it before 😆 I see the practicality, especially if you entertain. The con is that you’re relegated to one style. Unless you love that look, then it’s a non issue 👍🏻
I love how you keep saying "source" this or that. Not so easy in this economy. I do have a beautiful wooden farmhouse style square/rectangle table with 4 chairs and a matching buffet. I definitely don't want to give them up as they are my nicest pieces of furniture I own. My problem is I bought them when I was in a 2 bedroom apartment that had a larger dining room. Now I am in a smaller, one bedroom apartment. You did give me a couple of ideas that I can try though. Nice video.

How do you create flow from one room to another? Thanks for consideration.
I bought a mid century modern dinig table but would like my space to be a blend of different styles (avoiding super matching furniture).. can you recommend dining chairs and decor that would accomplish that??? Thank you!
I’m working on a dining chair roundup soon Sarah! Like my video for best sectionals/ in the meantime look for inspiration images on Pinterest and see what others are doing that you love
I love your videos. How would you recommend someone decide on a decor style when they like many elements? For example, I have a difficult time choosing furniture and decor since I like a Hamptons color pallete, I have a lot of vintage of furniture, I love traditional and mixed metals.
Color will always pull a space together, no matter how different the various styles are. Check out my Dream Space series, the episode on color palettes may help guide you Jesse! 👍🏻☺️
I have a loft. I can do 60-65 INCH RECTANGLE TABLE or round. my issue is picking right tables and right color chairs. my sectional is dark gray. I have a modern style. I have the sodehamn sectional. I have chosen a round glass top table with a chrome base. My colors throughout these 3 rooms …. Are grey, white and silver with hints of black. What are your wise suggestions ???
Hello Julie! I really enjoyed watching this video. Thanks for the valuable tips. Question: how does one measure the dining room area in an open concept layout? Dining/living room combo is what I'm dealing with. Can you please let me know how to determine whether it'll be a rectangular or a square-shaped dining room? Thanks so much in advance!
Lay out your seating group and place the fan central above the tables Amber. Check out my lighting video for more tips- you would simply be substituting the pendants for a fan instead 👍🏻
Thanks, Julie, this is perfect for me -- I have one of those new, modular apts in DC with a long shape (like a shipping container). Can you explain the 36": clearance rule? Or point me to the video? I didn't get that.
So helpful as always! I have honey colored trim/baseboards (mid century) that are clashing with my dinning room design(teal, gold, white) Really want to paint them white or black but I'm stuck, any suggestions?
Hi Julie, I love your videos. I have small retanglar dinning area. What if there's no wall to build a banquette. Sliding door to the backyard on one side, pantry/cabinetry on the opposite side. Walk through space to the kitchen on the other side and living room the opposite side.
I'm obsessed with the idea of metal chairs with my wood oval dining table. I'm going for a boho vibe but a little mid century modern elements. Am I crazy to think metal chairs would fit in the theme of my small dining room?
You have NO idea how much I needed this. I just purchased a condo and my glass dining table is too large. I should have a round table but this was an investment I don’t want to give up

Question: how does one measure the dining room area in an open concept layout? Dining/living room combo is what I'm dealing with. Can you please let me know how to determine whether it'll be a rectangular or a square-shaped dining room? Thanks so much in advance!
Hi H! I answered your previous comment- check out my open concept layouts video for more tips on how to measure
Love these all😍

Thank you so much for your details and guidance
Please please guide about ceiling fan placement points
please make the video as soon as possible
Lay out your seating group and place the fan central above the tables Amber. Check out my lighting video for more tips- you would simply be substituting the pendants for a fan instead 👍🏻
I have a 996sqt 2bathroom 3bedroom apartment.and its a walk in kitchen small living room.what type of table should I buy for a family of 5ppl.
Small round works or a rectangular table pushed against a wall to free up clearance Yaneri 👍🏻😊
Great ideas 🙂
Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
Thanks, Julie, this is perfect for me -- I have one of those new, modular apts in DC with a long shape (like a shipping container). Can you explain the 36": clearance rule? Or point me to the video? I didn't get that.
Check out these videos for more tips LO: dining room mistakes, awkward space long and narrow room, and open concept layouts 👍🏻☺️
So helpful as always! I have honey colored trim/baseboards (mid century) that are clashing with my dinning room design(teal, gold, white) Really want to paint them white or black but I'm stuck, any suggestions?
Thank you for watching Erika! Check out my video on wood trim plus fav paint colors for more inspiration 👍🏻☺️
@@JulieKhuu I will, thanks.
Can an 84" rectangle table for in a 12x11.dining room???
I have a dinning table against a wall ... do I hang lights over the dinning table
Sure why not? Or wall sconces, whichever vibes with your aesthetic 👍🏻
Soooo helpful
I have a pounded metal round dining table. It is leaving a metal smell on my arms or clothes. Should I get a glass top? Or will that be overkill?
Glass would be my suggestion as well 👍🏻
White table clear chairs genius
For tight corners, I love that look! 😍
Hi Julie, I love your videos. I have small retanglar dinning area. What if there's no wall to build a banquette. Sliding door to the backyard on one side, pantry/cabinetry on the opposite side. Walk through space to the kitchen on the other side and living room the opposite side.
You may purchase a small bench or banquette or similar use a smaller round/oval table so there’s no defined edges Duyen
I'm obsessed with the idea of metal chairs with my wood oval dining table. I'm going for a boho vibe but a little mid century modern elements. Am I crazy to think metal chairs would fit in the theme of my small dining room?
If you love it, you will make it work no matter what your style is Cassandra! 👍🏻☺️
this video is very helpful,i have idea now how to decorate my small dining room.
Awesome 👏🏻 thank you for watching JJen! 🙏🏻☺️
I am struggling with a 1000 square foot home with 4 of us
That’s tough- I just purchased a home 1022 sq ft- I empathize with you. My living room is big, but the two bedrooms feel very smallish to me!
Try bunk or lofted beds to save on space and storage
