  • This is my mashup of footage from a 1964 meeting between The Beatles and stuffy British government officials (such as Harold Wilson). Mr. Wilson was famously memorialized two years later in George Harrison's "Taxman".

As much as I love the Beatles and their politics, this one song came to grate on me over time. For all their complaints about the British tax system taking away all their money, they seemed to do very well --- driving around in psychedelic Rolls Royces and buying mansions and farm estates. Harrison in particular, shortly after writing Taxman, bought a castle at Friar Park, and previously lived in a six-bedroom estate in Kinfauns. Anyway, I adore George (my favorite Beatle), but I still have to wonder what Mr Wilson and Mr Heath did to harm their incomes so much. Oh, and nice video you put together, by the way. An interesting document of the times.

Thanks for watching! I totally get your point. I don’t know how much you know about their story but they were totally screwed financially from 1964 until they renegotiated their contracts with EMI in the UK and Capital in America in the mid ‘70s. Most of that was the result of their manager being completely inexperienced in the music industry. He negotiated terrible contracts regarding record sales and publishing royalties. They were working their butts off and the only people becoming millionaires were the businessmen. While they always had nice homes and didn’t want for anything; they never had money in the bank. Everything they purchased had to be approved by accountants. My point is it would be pretty frustrating to be the most successful act in the history of entertainment only to watch everyone around them getting rich. To top it all off the British government had essentially a 90% tax at the time. For as much money as The Beatles worldwide success brought into England I think I’d be resentful of a 90% tax as well.

@@JonBlackstone Thanks for the reply. I actually didn't know much about the financial side, the way you described it. I get that it's more complicated than it looked.

Funny video..I think George (and maybe the others) were complaining about taxes well before they released that song.

Thanks for watching! I have to confess this is one of my favorite videos I've made. It might be to esoteric for casual fans; but if you're a Beatles nut like me there's a lot to enjoy. I'm kind of proud of it!

That’s my favorite footage of John ever. I can hear Brian Epstein saying “Now boys, never allow yourself to be photographed drinking alcohol. It won’t go well with the parents”. 😎
