This is inspiring me. I actually have the original Kirsten fabric that I found at a discount department store in the late 80s early 90s. I begged my mom to buy it so I could have a Kirsten dress, but being 10 going on 30 I wisely chose not to make it then just to grow out of it in a year. So, 6 and a half yards of Kirsten fabric still sits on my shelf (it's travelled across country 4 or 5 times). Now I just need to decide if I want a reproduction Kirsten dress, or if I want to make a wrapper gown that will adjust with me as I age. You've given me some motivation to complete this project 30 years later....
After Babbity Kate’s video about Kirsten I’ve become attached to her. Though hearing about the American girls ‘meet dresses’ definitely makes me picture them all walking the runway in lady Gaga style meat dresses. Knowing Kirsten’s story I could see her doing it tho she’s an agent of chaos
I bought back in the 80s the original American girls Samantha and Kirsten kits for my two daughters. This outfit brings back fond memories for me. I cant wait to see it done!!😊😊❤❤
Before you dye (like the day before) do a lotion treatment on your hands (squirt lotion in a plastic glove, smoosh it a bit, put your hands in and add hair ties at your wrists, wear for an hour at least. I wear over night) If your skin if hydrated the dye will stick less. Use lotion before you pop on your gloves and start to dye. I worked with a heavy duty ink (pure black, made to last 100 years) and my favorite trick for the newbies was to lotion my hands and then slather them with ink and wipe it away. The ink couldn't dye my skin because it couldn't get in to the skin. (I am so glad I am not in that job anymore. 18 years was enough)
Loved Dora in the bonnet and apron ❤ My cat would shred me if I tried to do that to him 😂 Love the cosplay so far too! I can't wait to see the finished look. 😊
The reason the back and front looked different is because the front is printed that blue green colour. The dye goes under that into the actual fabric.. the amount of dye one needs is dependent on the weight of the fabric. So you need to weigh the test swatch and know the exact amount of dye used and in theory the amount of water and from that calculate how much dye to use for the weight of the all the fabric. It is a real pain. You need accurate scales and measuring equipment. We had to do this in class to make swatches for a project and then dye the project fabric to get it exactly like the swatch.
I like the fabric that you found, even if it's not spot on! I always enjoy hearing about the process of finding the matching fabrics for these cosplays 🙂 💙
You should do a reveal shoot with Dora in the bonnet and you in yours. Lol. She is seriously cute in it! Loving the dress so far. Even if it's not the exact blue, without them being directly next to each other, I'm not sure anyone could tell. Still looks gorgeous.
I think that the fabric for the bonnet being of a stiffer matirial it's going to be a good thing in the long run because it's going to help to keep the shape once you scale things up. With a softer fabric it would look floppy.
I think you for pretty close with the dye. It's hard to tell on screen but I think it really looks great. Dora defiantly has to make her presence known. She's so very helpful and looks very unimpressed with wearing the hat! I think she likes the apron though lol
I love turning on your videos and watching you work on your dresses while I work on my own. It's so much fun. I have been working on a Tudor dress and a petticoat while watching you and I'm ALMOST DONE! It's been really nice!
I think it’s going to turn out lovely! I tried to dye a couple skirts last year and it was such a catastrophe I’ll never try to dye again. The fabric I bought to sew my McCall’s 1840’s dress looks just like Kirsten’s red school dress.
I've actually heard that a lot! 😉 They're called "meet" dresses because it's what the dolls are wearing when they're first sold, and match the cover art of their first book, which is titled "meet [doll's name]"
I love the fabric you found! I don't follow anyone on Instagram, so I knew you had found something, but I've been longing to see what exactly. It's a triumph. The fabric is beautiful and so worth everything you put into it. I, too, hope the rest of the project goes smoothly, because I just can't wait to see the final dress.
I swear I remember us owning a similar blue fabric that is closer to kirstens dress because the fabric was bought years ago and I wonder if we still own it. Also Dora is adorable and I love seeing her dressed up!!
When does your new show start? Right now I have a trip to Seattle at the end of February. If I keep the trip, I would absolutely love to come see you in a performance!

That's so cool that you have the original fabric!

omg, someone else from the babbity kate video
lol
also the agent of chaos is accurate
I’d say matching the colors is more important than the pattern because that’s more recognizable
I always love your videos, but Dora all dressed up is just such an adorable bonus! Thank you!! 😂🎉❤
Wizard of oz plus American Girl sounds like my cup of tea
Gotta say regardless of the differences, the fabric choices you made are a beautiful homage to the original. It will be an awesome Cosplay outfit!

that shade of blue is so beautiful on you, Rebecca!

Oh interesting! Thanks for the tip!
Dora's appearance on the runway was too funny. Be careful...she might steal your ticket to Comic Con.

I can’t wait to see how the pattern turns out!
I’ve always wanted Kirsten. Grew up poor, so was never able to get her. I am loving you making her dress!! I need to make a similar dress.
You can find Kirsten relatively inexpensively secondhand, if you still want one! 😉

Dora bonnet is adorable. If I tried to put a bonnet on either of my kitties I’d have to sleep at night with one eye open LOL!
Very classic and cottage core/Pioneer!

Really appreciate your explanation of how to calculate measure and sew tucks. As always love the video love Kirsten love your projects. 🧵
That really is so satisfying when you rip your fabric!
I'm working with linen right now so it's a little bit more of a struggle to get a straight line! Lol
i do love the math that you do. Thanks for sharing.

Kitty was super adorable 🤗 Can't wait for the next video to see it complete. This was a fun watch 🌻🍄
Can't wait for the next video. I like your choice of fabric.
I have this doll. Love her still
Awwwwwwwww Dora!!!! 😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤

This makes me want to make a blouse with the spoon flower fabric, just in case they rerelease Kirsten lol
Do it!

Just have to say, being unfamiliar with these dolls, at first I heard the name as "meat kirsten" and couldn't figure it out!

@@LadyRebeccaFashions i was imagining Lady Gaga's meat dress from a few years ago !
Captions said “meat”, too
@@jw8223 my captions are auto generated, but that's pretty funny! 🤦♀️
Hearing "Kirsten's Meet Dress," but thinking "Kirsten's MEAT Dress."

It was actually a calico fabric that existed at the time, so you might very well have had the actual Kirsten dress fabric. And thanks!

Aww, it's not till the second weekend of March. I hope you have fun on your trip though!
@@LadyRebeccaFashions Bummer! Thanks!!
Dora 😍
Sew far sew good! 😉😂
Try royal blue alone
That was what I had tried first, but it didn't do enough.
Me too lol😂
How about a darker blue dye
That would just make the fabric darker - I wanted to make it brighter, but they didn't have a dye like that at Joann's.
I have trouble finding exactly the right shades too we have hobby lobby not Joann's maybe that's why
Is Joanns your only local fabric store? We have a Hobby Lobby as well as Joanns and honestly I tend to find better fabrics there.
Yeah. There is a hobby lobby here too, but I don't support them.
@@LadyRebeccaFashions Gotcha. I know some choose to boycott them. But your custom dyed fabric is looking great, can't wait for the next episode!😍
My deep dark soul is now satisfied when you ripped fabric 😁. Hello A-Dora-ble 🐈. It's so nice to see you😊. See you later😊.
I can't tell the defiance between the difference Kirsten dresses
Smurfet?
