  • Welcome to the first episode of our new series, Birth of a Blue Water Yacht. Those of you who read Ocean Sailor Magazine, will have seen our in depth build articles of the same name. We are now bringing you a new RUclips series highlighting the various steps involved in building a Kraken yacht. In this episode, head of design Filip Sochaj, explains which fibre mats are used throughout the build and why.

top of the line in every aspect, if you have the budget and looking to sail across an ocean. if someone asked me what I'll drive across Africa I would say only a land cruiser, same level of reliability and safety with comfort.

I'm confused about the difference between 0-90 and 45, Aren't they the same just turned 45°? Excellent video though!

It is how the roll is made. If the roll is laid out on the table then you will have 0 and 90 degrees crossing and on the second roll you will have 45 degree crossing. Same angle at the point that they cross but a different angle with regard to the roll in general.

Sorry guys, not enough. Hand lay-up doesn't cut it when you are looking to win customers for new builds. If you aren't Vac-bagging with Vinyl-Ester resin you are being left behind.

    • @KrakenYachts

Kraken yachts are vac bagged with vinyl-ester resin :) Our first boats were hand lay-up but this is no longer the case.

@@KrakenYachts Good to know... I'd get rid of this video and re-film the lay-up with your new techniques, re-edit this episode and re-publish. Seriously guys, I've been watching your company and there so many good things about your designs. Don't let your positive momentum go sideways by showing obsolete methods, buyers today are more knowledgeable and looking for builders that don't cut corners.

The skin layers are always hand laid. Also, the structure is far more substantial than other yachts that just use a simple matrix so this also has to be hand lay up. We will be showing the lamination in a few episodes time.

Looking forward to the new video on the vacuum bagging process. Did you consider using prepegs to combine desirable sturdiness with less weight? Almost 15ton empty weight on a 44-footer sounds rather hefty... thoughI do love the concept ❤
