A rather complicated issue has popped up with the naming poll for Rootpaw. Should the suffix spirit be reserved for its namesake, Emmy Grace Cherry, or would it be an honour to her to share the suffix with a main character?
I am still working on a Lost Stars video, but I thought this was more important and should be taken care of right away. My heart goes out to Emmy's extended family and community. I wonder what they're up to these days.

Rootpaw thinks his father is weird because he can see ghosts.
And if they give him the -spirit suffix, I think he would be insulted and angry because he does'nt want to have to do anything with ghosts.

It makes me so proud to see how respectful this fandom is, honestly. I’m serious. As you said, this girl died in a tornado 11 years ago and we all still remember her, her character and why Brightspirit is in the series. That’s before/when some of the members of this fandom were born and yet we still seem to remember the legacy of this girl.
The way you were as respectful to dedicate this video to Emmy Grace Cherry is also a sign of how respectful we are. Just as I said at the start, I’m very proud to be a part of the Warriors Community.

Here's my two cents:
I personally believe that while -spirit can be a good choice, due to Rootpaw's passionate personality and his newfound ability, there are other choices, and ones that do not potentially ruin the purpose of Brightspirit's character. -Wing, -spring, and -fall (my personal favorite) are all also great choices that match Rootpaw and don't forsake Brightspirit.
However, there is one circumstance in which the suffix -spirit may actually be in Rootpaw's favor.
So, he can see spirits now, right? What if he saw Brightspirit? What if she helps guide him through this dark time in which StarClan is silent, and then Rootpaw requests the -spirit suffix to honor her and all the help she's giving him? Not only is this still keeping the memorial for Emmy, but it also gives it real story relevance, thus making the memorial even more important!
If we, the fandom, still care this much about Emmy over ten years after her tragic passing, then surely the authors can't sit back and forget. While this maybe an unpopular opinion, I love Rootpaw and I want him to have a cool warrior name that matches his fiery demeanor. But if the authors start making -spirit yet another commonplace suffix, then it will just lose relevance over time, just like -heart. I don't want this to happen to -spirit, especially since it has significance beyond simple naming conventions. Despite this, if they can pull off using -spirit while still keeping Brightspirit and Emmy's memorial on its own merits, I don't really mind.
In conclusion, it depends whether or not -spirit should be Brightspirit's "thing." If it is not exclusive, I believe that it must still be connected in order to maintain its significance. Otherwise, it will just be lost in the sea of insignificant names.

100% Great idea! I love the way it ties in with the remembrance of one of our youngest fans whose life was tragically cut short along with her family and it shows the dedication of honoring that little girl. Plus, it's just a way to show how kind-hearted and caring this community really is. It also makes sense given how Rootpaw can see spirits.

personally, i don’t have too much hope that the current people at working partners remembered that -spirit was a specific suffix, especially after Vicky retired. if it was in memorial, then sure, i’d love rootspirit to be an interesting choice, especially if they somehow tied brightspirit into it.
but i feel like it’s more likely that it was just a mistake, which does hurt me to think about, but it’s one that i can easily see happen.

Cuz he literally fell in the preview lol. Jkjk. I just think it sounded dark and mysterious, but not like "Dark Forest" dark. After you did a series about your reaction towards crazy Warrior names, I should have seen this video coming XD. I'm not a huge fan of "Rootspirit," but I can respect it. If I can respect a ridiculous name like "Twigbranch," then I can respect a name like "Rootspirit." I can understand names when it comes to personal meanings or honoring a memory. I can see both sides and respect either sides.
Interpretation is a big factor in the debate in my eyes.
I still would prefer Rootbeer lol.
I hope the kid found peace even while the fans continue to bicker about the lore of a fictional book series about sentient cats socially modeled after humans.
Considering how brightheart was treated after her creator left, I do not believe the team would be capable of handling brightspirit’s symbolic suffix properly either. I do not believe it should be used for a new character.
But If it was unavoidable and would be going to a new character no matter what, then I believe it should be needlepaw because she would be a better fit for this young girl’s memory than rootpaw when it comes to what she is remembered as, and in terms of personality.
I think the suffix itself isn’t the meaningful part. It’s Brightspirit all together because that’s what she was right? So I don’t think naming a character with the same suffix would be too horrible but maybe that’s just how I’d feel as well. I could see both too but I think it would fit his growth for what’s to come better too

I CANNOT let -spirit be a name for a character. Especially a character like Rootpaw, who is rude and flakey. I don’t think yet he is even WORTHY of having that suffix. If the character named with the suffix was somehow tied to BrightSpirit and honoured Emmy, I would be somewhat ok with that. But for a uptight and rude character like Rootpaw, even as a main protagonist, isn’t that character that deserves to honour Emmy.

I don’t think any cat really unless they have the same heart as Emmy can be named after her. BrightSpirit IS Emmy, it’s her ‘spirit’ in warriors and the hunters need to respect that.

Juniper Storm, moon is kinda different tho. It’d be like comparing naming a child Anne Frank to naming a child God. Naming a child Anne Frank is politically incorrect. It’s disrespectful because that’s a person name, it belongs to them and only them. Naming a child God is just religiously incorrect. It’s probably not as incorrect to people who don’t believe in a god because they don’t see the significance to it, but everyone knows the significance of Anne Frank. I hope this kinda makes sense.
I still prefer Rootspring. It shows a sign of growth. As a tree grows, so do the roots, as if they spring from the ground.
I honestly think that it’s not an insult to Emmy Grace Cherry to name Rootpaw Rootspirit. I think that the name Brightspirit was given as a tribute, not specifically the suffix spirit. A lot of people think Rootpaw is a rude little apprentice, but this is only the first book, he could change (I mean, he’s like, 7 moons old by the end of Lost Stars, what apprentice that age isn’t rude). I feel as if Emmy would be upset to know that people were getting so angry over this (that’s just what I feel like, not what I know she thinks). Because honestly, she was given the name BRIGHTSPIRIT as a tribute. If another character is given the prefix Bright the fandom doesn’t lose their minds, this should honestly be a battle that everyone should stop fighting. Because, you know what? Emmy was the type of loving and caring person, that would be disgusted by all the aggressive behaviour of the people who get to live another day, another day that she will never be able to experience. You are all being ungrateful fox-hearts. Let’s live a day without the fights that only create an even more sad world.

I'm so happy people are still remembering Emmy after all these years, even when most of us could have forgotten. I, personally, like the name Rootspirit (although I voted for Rootspring, because of Emmy), but I'm sure plenty of people think it would be terrible to name him this. I think if it's presented as an option but doesn't actually win, it'll be alright. If it does win, though, so what? Then we have another character to remember Emmy by :)
I might be really mean and be causing people to hate me, and yes, I am glad that Brightspirit is the name of a little girl's warrior cat memorial, but that doesn't mean that no cat in the entire series can ever be named with the suffix "spirit". If she was really THAT BIG OF A WARRIORS FAN, she would probably be honored to have a main character share her cat's suffix. I mean, I would!
Alexa Misty But who really knows? Can we really assume something about somebody who (I hate to put is so bluntly but...) is dead? We will never know what Emmy Grace Cherry would have thought about this, so why should we just make assumptions. Wouldn’t it be better to just not name another character with the suffix “spirit” then possibly insult her? That’s the way I see it, anyway.
@@Copperflash I agree, but I don't think that the suffix should be limited to one cat only if it's in memory of someone. What if one of the Erins decides to memorialize someone as a Warrior and names the warrior, for example, Goldenheart. Does that mean that the suffix "heart" shouldn't be used again? That would rule out a *LOT* of possible warrior names. It personally doesn't make that much sense to me, I'm sorry. But, I really don't want to argue with a fellow warriors fan so let's just agree to disagree :)
Alexa Misty Although you have a point, perhaps the suffix “Spirit” should be reserved to represent those Warriors fans who have passed on from the real world but who’s spirits live on in the world of Warriors.

But I have to say (and I hope I don't trigger anyone with this), if the erins made another memorial character with the suffix spirit, the fandom would get mad again, lol

I think -Spring still honors Rootpaw's heritage to some extent; his mentor Dewspring is both his uncle-in-law via Finleap and his temporarily adopted uncle via Hawkwing. And it could be an opening for a more developed mentor-apprentice relationship. Then again, I mostly chose it because of the uncontrollable "boing" sound effect that I experience every time I read the name Rootspring.

I think that Emmy would have been happy to have the 'spirit' suffixed used for a MAIN CHARACTER. Considering, Brightspirit wasn't in the books for very long at all. Having a main character with the suffix would be even more of an honor and a way better memorial to Emmy, than a character who only appeared a few times.
Just because she was immortalized doesn't mean that that suffix should be barred. I think its a good name. I don't mean this with disrespect.
It's a bit like retiring the jersey number of a great or famous sports star.
I just personally don’t think it fits Rootpaw’s persona. He’s pretty uptight, and I’m my opinion that’s not really worthy of having a suffix like spirit.
I'm glad you made a video on this, not all people knew of the origin of the spirit suffix and I hope this makes people aware of it before making a decision on what to vote for.
No disrespect to Emmy, I completely forgot about her since the last time I read about her back in like 2012, but of course I understand why Rootspirit was a possibility and it's like how you said, because of his character, because of his journey, the fact that he can communicate with spirits as a regular cat AND that he has some sort of purpose involving it. I think its respect enough that Emmy got an actual warrior name and a memorial. I dont think it would be disrespectful if the suffix "spirit" is used for a main protagonist. If you want to go that far, then call out all the people who have OCs with the suffix "spirit" and OCs that are actually called Brightspirit. Personally, I think people should stop being sensitive white knights. If the Erin's decide to use Rootspirit, that's their choice and they are justified to do it.

We have Bristlefrost, representing the cold winter, so Rootspring will be the new spring that comes and warm the forest and the lake.

Please wait to bring out your pitchforks until after I express my opinion: I think Rootspirit would’ve been a good name for Rootpaw/Rootspring because he can see and summon the dead spirits of cats. However, I think the suffix -spirit should only be used for medicine cats or mediators like Tree
I don't think Brightspirit was even a good tribute name. It contains no part of the girl's actual name, you'd have no way to tell it is some kind of tribute. It's not like it was the girl's fan character either. It's just a random name that the girl had no input on. I would have thought Cherryspirit or Emmaspirit or something would have been more.. actually in the vein of a tribute.

If Rootpaw got the name Rootspirit then Emmy would have gotten a main character for her.
If Rootpaw got another name then there wouldn't be anything to worry about.
If they announced "we are naming him root spring to honor her memory"yes sure great I'd love it, but "this is a name we tossed into a poll for you to pick from cuz it sounds cool" no, absolutely not. There isnt a question on if this is intended as a tribute to her, it's not, they didnt say it was, it just isnt

I voted for Rootfall but Rootspirit seemed like a lovely name and that I think it would be an honor for anyone to have their warrior name in the books.
I like the idea of Spirit being a suffix for ANY OTHER CHARACTER that is NOT Rootpaw. His personality doesn't quite fit with the special meaning that the suffix holds. Unless he changes in the books, I don't think HIS suffix should be Spirit.
I completely forgot that Spirit was used as a memorial for Emm.

I think Rootwhisker is a good sounding name. I know it sounds silly. But I really like the sound of Rootwhisker. I think it would be a good name for Rootpaw, certainly much better than the other current names on the poll.

I personally feel like rootpaw should've been named rootspirit like yes, brightspirit is the name for Emmy, but that she for brightspirit as a whole not nessicarily just the suffix.
Rootspirit is such a great name though and the tribute character is very different situation though. I just hope that the tribute is never forgotten although spirit has words similar to it
If there were any new suffixes to choose from, I would've thought that 'flare' seemed fitting for Rootpaw.
I didn't think of Brightspirit or Emmy when I saw Rootspirit. I just thought "eh, I get it but I don't like it" and voted for Rootfall instead. I just love the way it sounds and read, and how natural it feels to say.

I think that a proper memorial for this little girl would be to perhaps name a leader “Brightstar” to show that she is a forever burning light, and that she will never be snuffed out. Perhaps it could even be a rogue who becomes leader, and maybe the rogue’s name could be Emmy!
Okay, I am basically agreeing with the side on the name should be able to be used. With Cherry in heart, I say that if one cat can have spirit then it would only be fair for others too as well.

I think he should be named Rootheart, I haven't read the other books in his arc yet but what I have seen he has a good heart. Rootpaw may haven't shown a lot of kindness in the first part of the first book but later on he becomes really kind and generous 😊
I don't have a problem with using -spirit, as long as it is used carfully and with respect to the original intent.
I think that Rootfall would be a good name for him. I don't believe that the suffix spirit should ever be used as a canon character name ever again. The spirit suffix represents how Emmy's spirit can live on in the books she loved so dearly. Naming Root law Rootspirit would take the sacredness and uniqueness our of the suffix that reminds you of Emmy.
It like Rootspirit. Spirit was used once for a special reason- Emmy. But once? Spirit is an honorary name; it shows honor to those who have passed. And think, Emmy is the only well-known death. Yet every two or so seconds someone dies. No doubt some of those are mojor warrior fans. It, to me, is kind of insulting that people only focus on Emmy. While she was a brave, beautiful girl, she wasn't the only warrior fan that died. Rootspirit may also honor more dead fans, I respect this. I vote Rootspirit. Continue Brightspirit, Emmy, and other's leagacy and honor!

A pre - explanation for what I am about to say: I can read minds at will, living or dead, near or far. And I tell you now, Emmy is okay with this and, Quiet Rage, she is thankful for the memorial photo at the end. Slip-up or not, she's okay with this. Believe me or not, what I say is true.

Rootspirit does sound nice though... but how about Rootghost?
Because Vicky isn't on the team anymore, and how Cherith and Kate are pretty...forgetful when it comes to Warriors, AND how there's a bunch of new writers/editors who weren't here when it happened...I do think they forgot/didn't know. Which is a pretty big oopsie. Personally, if they want to go with Rootspirit but then feel like they can't--how about Rootsoul?

Flame'Spark - Male (tom-cat) - dark ginger-ish tabby tom with soft paws and white splotches on his back that look like snow - Flame`Spark is violence and short-tempered, he is overprotective of his clan. But, Flame`Spark could also be a good friend and listener, he is hard-working and also clever.
