They were true friends! On screen and off! They cared deeply for each other. Very protective of each other.
Also, the third person in their trio of dear friendship was William Hopper, who played Paul Drake. He was always calling Della “beautiful!”

This is so soft 😭 absolutely love their chemistry, u can feel it thru the screen its so genuine, sometimes i feel like i watch a whole hr long episode just for that 5 min of overall interactions they have 🥺 i feel like i really appreciate their relationship more knowing of their actual real life selves and that it isnt overtly romantic, sometimes flirty but a lot of platonic love :')
They were so adorable together! I always love that little smile he would get what he would look at her. And also the way he would always take her by the arm when they were walking somewhere. Always the gentleman. Just love this ...thanks for sharing
Mr Burr was a very lucky man to have worked with her for so many year's, but I'm sure he knew that.

this is one of the BEST videos I have every watch! the timing, music matching the mood, I could go on and on. I have watch it at least 100 times and shared it to FaceBook 5 or 6 times. And I bet that when they made the show they didn't have to do many retakes, you can tell how well they really feel for each other. Thank for this wonderful work!
Barbara Hale was a customer of mine when I was working at the May Co. North Hollywood store in about 1976. She came into our department, and the other young salespeople ("valley girls") didn't have a clue as to who she was. I did. I walked up to her and said, "How may I serve you, Miss Hale?" She beamed a wonderful smile my way, loving the fact I knew who she was. Later, I went back to the two sales gals and asked them if they knew who Perry Mason was. They nodded yes. I explained who Barbara Hale was: "That was his secretary, Della Street!" Lovely lady, that Della!

Just fantastic! A much more innocent time in many ways. When I view the original shows now I feel like I'd love to slip back in time. I actually got a chance to ask Raymond Burr about that many years ago. Guess you missed the part where he admitted he was attracted to her. Most homosexuals will never admit to being attracted to one of the opposite sex.
I saw the interview where he said she was one of the most beautiful women on God's earth and he would have to be an idiot not to be attracted to her. And then he added:"And I'm not an idiot." @@Jantv81

That scene from PM Returns when Ray hugs Barbara his hand was just above her but LOL Raymond burr getting cheeky
There's a scene in one of the original episodes, I can't remember the name, but it ends up at a dance in an old folks' home and Perry's right hand is way too low for a boss to be holding his secretary while dancing. The ironic thing is that P&D are in the background. The scene is focused on Paul. Makes me wonder whether Ray and Barbara were having a bit of fun to see how far they could push things without being noticed.

You did such a wonderful job with the video. I just watch it over and over. Too bad they could not have had an on screen romance. ESG had script approval. I heard an interview with Barbara Hale she hinted that ESG had problems with Della and Perry getting together so to speak. Thank you for your video.
You might be right, but in the Perry Mason novels it is very ckear that PM and DS are more than just attorney-secretary.
I never did like it that ESG made her last name "Street".
I heard Barbara suggest that it was because in real life ESG was having an affair with his secretary and he didn't want his straight-laced Catholic wife to get the idea that a Perry/Della romance was a reflection of reality.

About Ray Burr's private life - it's none of my business, so I won't comment on it to support gossip and rumors. Perry Mason was some of his best work and there, on set, the chemistry sparks flew with his on screen associate and real life friend Barb Hale. Such a blessing for any show to have such companionship sparks to add to their storyline, after all, Perry definitely carried a torch for Della - ESG already established that in the early novels. :o) :o)

Yea. I loved it when William Hopper would say "hello beautiful". He was Hedda Hopper's son. There was a special love between Perry and Della. She knew he was gay, and she didn't care. Loved it when they came back in the 80's here in Denver. Her real son William Matt played Paul Drake's son.

Just because Raymond was gay didn't mean that Perry was. In fact in the novels he very definitely wasn't. Too many people confuse the actors with the characters.

there was nothing wrong in the 1950's to be a closed, talented, a gentleman, and gay actor such Mr. Burr, flirting with a beautiful woman such as Mr. Hale. and making her the queen of the show and the film captured that for prosperity.

Even though they never out and out sowed it, I always thought Perry and Della had a romance from work. It was a more husband/wife or romance couple than employer/secretary.
As Raymond Burr once remarked, viewers only saw what went on in the office not what P&D got up to behind closed doors.
They should had children 🧒
In the Perry Mason movies from the 30's staring Warren Williams, Perry and Della actually got married.
