  • In the final concert of NYO Jazz’s 2018 European tour, Sean Jones leads the band in a performance of Frank Foster’s “Shiny Stockings” at Konzerthaus Berlin.
In the summer of 2018, gifted young jazz musicians from across the country came together to study with world-class jazz masters during the inaugural season of NYO Jazz. A completely free program for all participants, NYO Jazz gives young musicians the opportunity to perform as cultural ambassadors on an international stage and share a uniquely American musical genre with cultures around the world through an international tour each summer. Trumpeter Sean Jones-one of the field’s outstanding performer-composer-educators-served as soloist and bandleader for NYO Jazz’s Carnegie Hall debut and inaugural European tour, which included performances in the Netherlands, Germany, and Great Britain. World-renowned jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves and critically acclaimed trombonist Wycliffe Gordon joined NYO Jazz as special guest artists for the ensemble’s Carnegie Hall debut. Ms. Reeves was also featured as a guest artist on the tour to Europe.

This group of kids gives us all hope for our music. Your country produces some top rate people and I am looking at a whole group of them here. Thanks.

Cyrus Mackey - love that last name 😉 - from Dillard, same school that gifted us with Summer Camargo, and she’s here too. Love this chart, the original Frank Foster, played it myself numerous times with a big band on trombone.

He must be studying up on Sonny Payne. He was a master showman of the drumset.

Incredible well played by these youngsters. Swings as hell. I've been thru most of the YT's stockings and this is one of the most potent and energetic versions out there. I cant help wondering if todays youths talking about some rap artist "tearing the place down" have any idea at all of the massive impact of a live big band. It makes Kanye West and co appear as an amateur evening at the old folks home.

Absolutely smooth and altogether with great solos to boot. I don't think they really know how good they are. Kudos from an old jazz buff. Don't look back

What a great sounding band, sublime drumming...shame the lead trumpet couldn’t follow the direction in the last repeated section like the rest of the band. If they had played the shock note loud and then got out of the way it would’ve all the more impressive.
