  • “Shiny Stockings” was written by arranger, composer and tenor saxophonist Frank Foster. He was in the Count Basie band from 1953-1964, and learned the ropes from Basie in terms of how to write effective, swinging arrangements. This song debuted on the 1956 album, “April in Paris,” and it’s the perfect Basie number with a relentless crescendo, building up to an explosive ending.
Basie’s reaction to “Shiny Stockings”: “You really put one down that time.”
(from an interview jazz journalist Bob Bernotas conducted with Foster)

Hi Paolo. Great arrangement of my favorite Foster tune. Love the walking bass with your choruses and improv. All the best to you and Stephanie for a great remainder of your European trip and gigs. Lew Scharpf

Left hand is really singing. "Basso profondo", as they say in ... everywhere! 🎹

  • @TheTamsinJones

Paolo, not a number I'm familiar with your performance is just wonderful. We met briefly when Stephanie's mom made a surprise appearance in Maidstone, England a few years ago. When are you visiting UK again ?

  • @jimvanos950

Thanks Paolo always makes the Sunday evening!

  • @p1anosteve

Great solo.. I think there are echos of Dave McKenna in that left hand! Is he an influence Paolo?

  • @gordonkemp1620

Five minutes of wonderful magnificence maestro. Thank you so much Paolo. Pure joy.

  • @stilllearning9590

That was great! Love the walking bass and your use of dynamics. As always, your historic background in the tune is appreciated....and in this age of so many divisive things in politics, society and even entertainment, it's really a blessing to have you to just perform some great music, devoid of all that.

  • @jeremypreece870

Love it! As always you arrangement builds and you somehow open up all sorts of possibilities with the tunes that you explore. I didn't know the history of this tune until I read your explanation. However, whenever I hear it I think of Ella singing it! in fact, I think that she recorded it with Basie.

  • @dcidublin

    Absolutely gorgeous

  • @xavc2003

This was great! Would love to hear more of your amazing takes on other Frank Foster or even Thad Jones arrangements 😄😄

  • @billsalter7374

Strong work on this vibrant, evocative tune... so keep picking the good ones &

  • @316neil

Paolo, this is the first time I’ve heard you properly on your own. I love your interpretation of this. You put your own twist on what is clearly the Bill Basie arrangement, and I love it!
